I am making my playlist for my fast approaching 31 mile ultra and I want 8 hrs of music,
So name me one favourite so I can take yours with me

Personally, I'm musically ignorant and when looking to endure and keep going, trying to numb my mind out vs. focus costs me. But that is just me. In any case, if I chose to use music to help me get by then by virtue of how "I" think (which is way left field so not to be valued), I would envision the entire run and try and apply music that would inspire me based upon milestones that I would expect. To that end (and again, I'm very limited on knowing the songs/artists so have a hard time looking them up, and prefer old western music (which most hate) to simply zombify myself) here is my "one song," and then a collection of others that I go to on occasion. Finally, most of these are so mainstream that folks don't care for them, yet they work for me.

My "one," repetitive and steady, calming, yet not inspiring:

This "one" has personal meaning, yet it's good for me as a "chug it out" inspiration:
(I weep every time I hear it, my inspiration to battle the only depression I've ever known upon the loss of my Moose and heading to Montana)

A solid "calming" song for when you might need a moment to slow and collect yourself:

I cannot help DMP. You see, I LOVE the blues, but they don't make you run, they make you sit down and chill.
That wouldn't help your cause...

But come to think of it I've Been Everywhere by Hank Snow might give you a good pace.

 

It just hit me. Stayin Alive by the BeeGees.

I don't particularly like the song, but we're taught in CPR class to do chest compressions to the beat.

Besides, we all hope you stay alive throughout the run

I can lose track of time while listening to Jackson Browne tunes. Say what you will about the person, he was a magnificent songwriter. This is my favorite one.


And of course when those legs start burning......

 

Can't go wrong with some Foo Fighters, Chili Peppers, or Zepplin...all will keep you energized in your drive to the end...

 

Though it's not my favourite this song suits your situation.
