Mental health professionals have a 'duty to warn' about a leader who may be unfit to serve.

If you take President Trump’s words literally, you have no choice but to conclude that he is psychotic. A delusion is “a fixed false belief that is resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact.” Despite all evidence to the contrary, Trump asserts that his New York office was bugged by President Obama, and that his inauguration had the biggest crowd size in history. Before the election, Right Wing Watch published a list of 58 conspiracies proclaimed by Trump.

Is it all for effect, to rile up his base, deflect blame and distract from his shortcomings, or does Trump really believe the insane things he says? It’s often hard to know, because as Harvard psychoanalyst Lance Dodes put it, Trump tells two kinds of lies: the ones he tells others to scam them, and those he tells himself. “He lies because of his sociopathic tendencies," Dodes said. "There's also the kind of lying he has that is in a way more serious, that he has a loose grip on reality." Is he crazy like a fox or just plain crazy? Not a question we want to be asking about our president.

Much has been written about Trump having narcissistic personality disorder. As critics have pointed out, merely saying a leader is narcissistic is hardly disqualifying. But malignant narcissism is like a malignant tumor: toxic.

Psychoanalyst and Holocaust survivor Erich Fromm, who invented the diagnosis of malignant narcissism, argues that it “lies on the borderline between sanity and insanity.” Otto Kernberg, a psychoanalyst specializing in borderline personalities, defined malignant narcissism as having four components: narcissism, paranoia, antisocial personality and sadism. Trump exhibits all four.

His narcissism is evident in his “grandiose sense of self-importance … without commensurate achievements.” From viewing cable news, he knows "more about ISIS than the generals” and believes that among all human beings on the planet, “I alone can fix it.” His "repeated lying," “disregard for and violation of the rights of others” (Trump University fraud and multiple sexual assault allegations) and “lack of remorse” meet the clinical criteria for anti-social personality. His bizarre conspiracy theories, false sense of victimization, and demonization of the press, minorities and anyone who opposes him are textbook paranoia. Like most sadists, Trump has been a bully since childhood, and his thousands of vicious tweets make him perhaps the most prolific cyber bully in history.

A year ago, I warned that “the idea that Trump is going to settle down and become presidential when he achieves power is wishful thinking.” Trump, like many successful people, shows biological signs of hypomania — a mild and more functional expression of bipolar genes that manifest in energy, confidence, creativity, little need for sleep, as well as arrogance, impulsivity, irritability and diminished judgment. As is often typical, when Trump has achieved great success, his hypomania has increased with disastrous consequences.

In Michael Kruse's article “1988: the Year Donald Lost his Mind,” he wrote, “His response to his surging celebrity” after the publication of The Art of The Deal “was a series of manic, ill-advised ventures” that led to bankruptcy and divorce.

Last year, after Trump became the Republican presidential nominee, New York Times columnist David Brooks noted a similar deterioration: “With each passing week, he displays the classic symptoms of medium-grade mania in more disturbing forms: inflated self-esteem, sleeplessness, impulsivity, aggression and a compulsion to offer advice on subjects he knows nothing about.” Much has been said about Trump's disjointed Associated Press interview last month. As Brooks wrote, “Manics display something called ‘flight of ideas.’ It's a formal thought disorder in which ideas tumble forth through a disordered chain of associations. One word sparks another, which sparks another …”

One symptom of hypomania is impulsivity. Seventy-two hours after Trump saw upsetting pictures of gassed Syrian children, he launched 59 Tomahawk missiles at the Assad regime. Whether Trump guessed right or wrong, sudden lethal moves that reverse his longstanding policy are disturbing. “Acting on instinct, Trump upends his own Syria policy” was the headline in The Times. Its analysis said the president’s advisers “were clearly uncomfortable with the suggestion that Mr. Trump was acting impulsively." As Ezra Klein put it, “A foreign policy based on Trump’s gut reactions to the images flashing before him on cable news” is “dangerous.”

Now Trump is ratcheting up tensions to create a crisis with North Korea.

Some say it is unethical to dare to diagnose the president, but hundreds of mental health professionals have come together to found Duty To Warn. We believe that just as we are ethically and legally obligated to break confidentiality to warn a potential victim of violence, our duty to warn the public trumps all other considerations.

More than 53,000 people have signed our petition, aimed at mental health professionals, stating Trump should be removed under the 25th Amendment because he is too mentally ill to competently serve. At a conference on the Duty To Warn last month at Yale medical school, psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton warned against creeping “malignant normality.” Under a malignantly narcissistic leader, alternate facts, conspiracy theories, racism, science denial and delegitimization of the press become not only acceptable but also the new normal. If we do not confront this evil, it will consume us.

Duty to Warn is planning a multicity March for Sanity on Oct. 7 to “make America sane again.” Hope to see you there, assuming we’re all still here.

And it is getting worse by the day. Trump's staff is reportedly jumping through hoops to try and keep him from going crazy over the Russian investigations. And both members of Trump's inner circle and pundits are worried over both Trump's health and mental heal which they see as deteriorating.

In recent days Trump has escalated his attacks on US media outlets — which he accuses of peddling “fake news” about him — singling out CNN over the retraction of a story about his administration’s supposed links with Russia, but also assailing rival cable networks, the New York Times and the Washington Post.

But the vulgarity of his latest assault triggered a torrent of criticism including within his own party.

“Inappropriate. Undignified. Unpresidential,” tweeted Jeb Bush, Trump’s rival for the White House nomination last year, while the top Republican on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Paul Ryan, conceded the president’s comments were “not appropriate.”

“What we’re trying to do around here is improve the tone, the civility of the debate. And this obviously doesn’t help do that,” Ryan told a news conference.

– ‘Out of his mind’ –

Brzezinski — the daughter of the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security advisor to Jimmy Carter — herself appeared uncowed. She responded with a post of her own, a photo of a young child reaching for Cheerios cereal.

“Made for little hands,” the caption read — a schoolyard taunt that has been leveled against the image-conscious Trump since the days of his candidacy.

In her Thursday show, Brzezinski suggested the president was psychologically unhinged.

“Everybody in Washington, in the administration, needs to look at this from… a point of view where they’re not lobotomized because you’re sitting in there and you’re so scared of him, and you think you need to suck up to the president.”

If a boss at NBC, MSNBC’s parent company, “started tweeting wildly about people’s appearances, bullying people, talking about people in the competition, lying every day, undermining his managers, throwing them under the (bus) — that person would be thrown out.

“There would be concerns that the person who runs the company is out of his mind.”

Early in the 2016 campaign the “Morning Joe” hosts were accused of being too friendly with Trump, a frequent guest on air.

The relationship however soured last August, when Trump tweeted: “Some day, when things calm down, I’ll tell the real story of @JoeNBC and his very insecure long-time girlfriend, @morningmika. Two clowns!”

Brzezinski, 50, is engaged to marry her co-host Scarborough, 54, a Republican former congressman.

MSNBC sprang to Brzezinski’s defense.

“It’s a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job,” the network’s public relations office wrote.

Scarborough likewise rallied behind his fiancee, re-tweeting a post from NBC spokesman Mark Kornblau that read: “Never imagined a day when I would think to myself, ‘it is beneath my dignity to respond to the President of the United States.'”

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders was quick to defend her boss.

“I don’t think that the president’s ever been someone who gets attacked and doesn’t push back,” Huckabee Sanders told Fox News.

“There have been an outrageous number of personal attacks, not just to him but to frankly everyone around him … This is a president who fights fire with fire and certainly will not be allowed to be bullied by liberal media or liberal elites in Hollywood or anywhere else.”

But at least half a dozen Republican lawmakers judged the president had crossed a line.

“Please just stop,” wrote Senator Ben Sasse on Twitter. “This isn’t normal and it’s beneath the dignity of your office.”

“This is not okay,” agreed Kansas lawmaker Lynn Jenkins.

The Trump-Brzezinski feud lit up the internet, where critics were reminded of Trump’s notorious attack last August on Fox reporter Megyn Kelly, who he said had “blood coming out of her wherever” after she challenged him in a campaign debate.

“Harry Potter” author and noted Trump critic J.K. Rowling took inspiration from a revered past president in writing: “‘Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.’ Abraham Lincoln.”

Donald Trump is not well

President Trump launched personal attacks against us Thursday, but our concerns about his unmoored behavior go far beyond the personal. America’s leaders and allies are asking themselves yet again whether this man is fit to be president. We have our doubts, but we are both certain that the man is not mentally equipped to continue watching our show, “Morning Joe.”

The president’s unhealthy obsession with our show has been in the public record for months, and we are seldom surprised by his posting nasty tweets about us. During the campaign, the Republican nominee called Mika “neurotic” and promised to attack us personally after the campaign ended. This year, top White House staff members warned that the National Enquirer was planning to publish a negative article about us unless we begged the president to have the story spiked. We ignored their desperate pleas.

The president’s unhealthy obsession with “Morning Joe” does not serve the best interests of either his mental state or the country he runs. Despite his constant claims that he no longer watches the show, the president’s closest advisers tell us otherwise. That is unfortunate. We believe it would be better for America and the rest of the world if he would keep his 60-inch-plus flat-screen TV tuned to “Fox & Friends.”

For those lucky enough to miss Thursday’s West Wing temper tantrum, the president continued a year-long habit of lashing out at “Morning Joe” while claiming to never watch it. During his early-morning tirade, Mr. Trump spit out schoolyard insults about “low I.Q. Crazy Mika,” “Psycho Joe” and much worse. He also fit a flurry of falsehoods in his two-part tweetstorm.

Mr. Trump claims that we asked to join him at Mar-a-Lago three nights in a row. That is false. He also claimed that he refused to see us. That is laughable.

The president-elect invited us both to dinner on Dec. 30. Joe attended because Mika did not want to go. After listening to the president-elect talk about his foreign policy plans, Joe was asked by a disappointed Mr. Trump the next day if Mika could also visit Mar-a-Lago that night. She reluctantly agreed to go. After we arrived, the president-elect pulled us into his family’s living quarters with his wife, Melania, where we had a pleasant conversation. We politely declined his repeated invitations to attend a New Year’s Eve party, and we were back in our car within 15 minutes.

Mr. Trump also claims that Mika was “bleeding badly from a face-lift.” That is also a lie.

Putting aside Mr. Trump’s never-ending obsession with women’s blood, Mika and her face were perfectly intact, as pictures from that night reveal. And though it is no one’s business, the president’s petulant personal attack against yet another woman’s looks compels us to report that Mika has never had a face-lift. If she had, it would be evident to anyone watching “Morning Joe” on their high-definition TV. She did have a little skin under her chin tweaked, but this was hardly a state secret. Her mother suggested she do so, and all those around her were aware of this mundane fact.

More significant is Mr. Trump’s continued mistreatment of women. It is disturbing that the president of the United States keeps up his unrelenting assault on women. From his menstruation musings about Megyn Kelly, to his fat-shaming treatment of a former Miss Universe, to his braggadocio claims about grabbing women’s genitalia, the 45th president is setting the poorest of standards for our children. We were heartened to hear a number of Republican lawmakers call out Mr. Trump for his offensive words and can only hope that the women who are closest to him will follow their examples. It would be the height of hypocrisy to claim the mantle of women’s empowerment while allowing a family member to continue such abusive conduct.

We have known Mr. Trump for more than a decade and have some fond memories of our relationship together. But that hasn’t stopped us from criticizing his abhorrent behavior or worrying about his fitness. During the height of the 2016 presidential campaign, Joe often listened to Trump staff members complain about their boss’s erratic behavior, including a top campaign official who was as close to the Republican candidate as anyone.

We, too, have noticed a change in his behavior over the past few years. Perhaps that is why we were neither shocked nor insulted by the president’s personal attack. The Donald Trump we knew before the campaign was a flawed character but one who still seemed capable of keeping his worst instincts in check.

This tweet is evidence of mental deterioration. The President needs a psych evaluation. I mean that seriously and literally.

Trump’s video is edited footage stemming from his honest-to-God actual appearance at Wrestlemania 23 in 2007 (It’s a whole thing). Anyway, the president’s tweet is an obvious swipe at CNN, who recently retracted a story claiming the Senate Intelligence Committee was investigating one of his campaign advisers. This was part of their probe into alleged collusion with Russia during the 2016 campaign.

It’s not the first time critics called for Trump’s removal under the 25th Amendment. Last time this happened was all the way back in the distant past of just last Thursday. Mean-spirited tweets directed at Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski caused some social media users to argue he was unfit for office, constitutionally speaking.

Calls to invoke the 25th Amendment will face some challenges, however. The short answer is that it has never been done before, so implementation remains hypothetical, and our current political situation makes it very unlikely. The slightly longer answer: the process requires that the Vice President and cabinet members have to tell Congress that the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” whatever that means. Then the VP becomes Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

In other words, both a Republican cabinet and Congress, which features a GOP majority, must agree that Trump no longer belongs in the position. On top of that, LawNewz.com columnist Robert Barnes has argued that the president’s inability to function is, legally speaking, a narrow question: eg. the president is in coma, or suffers from a mental illness so severe he can’t feed himself.
