David Frum: Republicans Have Been Lied To And Exploited By A Conservative Entertainment Complex

On Friday, author and former Bush speechwriter David Frum joined the Morning Joe panel, where he shared his blunt assessment of the current GOP.

When asked who can lead the Republican party now, Frum responded that he believes the Republican party is “a party of followership:”

The problem with the Republican leaders is that they’re cowards, not that they’re fundamentally mistaken. The real locus of the problem is the Republican activist base and the Republican donor base. They went apocalyptic over the past four years, and that was exploited by a lot of people in the conservative world. I won’t soon forget the lupine smile that played over the head of one major conservative institution when he told me that our donors think the apocalypse has arrived, that Republicans have been fleeced and exploited and lied to by a conservative entertainment complex.

Host Joe Scarborough asked him to repeat this slowly.
When asked to name names, Frum would say only to check in his book and that there are, really, “too many to name.” Right now, he continued, the leaders in the party have no space to operate.

As for Romney, whom Frum thought would have made an excellent president, he was “twisted into pretzels” only to find that “the people who put the cement shoes on his feet are now blaming him for sinking.”

I like that it's called the "conservative entertainment complex". That's all it is. The conservatives watch it. It makes them feel good. They probably drink beer and eat chips while they do it. Don't forget Fox News sued for their right to lie AND WON. They argued that the FCC policy against falsification was not a "law, rule or regulation". Mitt Romney made his final newsworthy post-election pronouncement, explaining to a conference call of big-dollar donors that he had fallen short because President Barack Obama had bribed liberal special interests with expensive gifts.

“With regards to the young people, for instance, a forgiveness of college loan interest, was a big gift…Free contraceptives were very big with young college-aged women. And then, finally, Obamacare also made a difference for them, because as you know, anybody now 26 years of age and younger was now going to be part of their parents’ plan, and that was a big gift to young people. They turned out in large numbers, a larger share in this election even than in 2008 … You can imagine for somebody making $25,000 or $30,000 or $35,000 a year, being told you’re now going to get free health care, particularly if you don’t have it, getting free health care worth, what, $10,000 per family, in perpetuity, I mean, this is huge … Likewise with Hispanic voters, free health care was a big plus. But in addition with regards to Hispanic voters, the amnesty for children of illegals, the so-called Dream Act kids, was a huge plus for that voting group.”

Romney’s comments about his opponent’s “old playbook,” as he called it, again revived a dystopian scenario conservatives have been warning about since the New Deal, where Democrats “buy” a permanent majority and undermine democracy at the cost of the productive class. Using this old myth to explain his defeat illustrates again Romney’s disconnect from modern America. He views growing groups—young voters and particularly young women, and Hispanics—as outside special interests, and not as an essential part of the fabric of America.

And it shows the mind of a man who believes that everything is for sale—including, or especially, votes. This is consistent with what I always felt was the most accurate criticism of Romney: that he approached politics as a salesman, offering every group a different pitch. From that perspective, it’s easy to see how he could complain about government as a competing salesman, cobbling together constituencies with “gifts”—which sound perilously close to “bribes” in this context.

A final point: President Obama backing the DREAM Act or contraception coverage is not a nakedly political gesture, it is a matter of policy difference. Addressing the needs and desires of people is not a bribe or a government gift to be exchanged for a vote. It is part of the purpose of representative government as conservative forefather Edmund Burke himself once envisioned: “Government is a contrivance of human wisdom to provide for human wants. Men have a right that these wants should be provided for by this wisdom.”

Romney’s distance from this perspective about government shows how far the conservative conversation has drifted from original principles. His impulse to rationalize defeat as victory for liberal special-interest bribery shows again that it is probably best for the country that he was not elected president this November.

LAS VEGAS--Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal criticized former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Wednesday for saying that he lost the 2012 election to President Barack Obama in part because Democrats promised "gifts" to minority groups, calling Romney's remarks "absolutely wrong."

According to The Los Angeles Times, Romney told donors on a conference call after the election that the Obama campaign "focused on giving targeted groups a big gift" and was "very generous" to ethnic minorities and young voters. Speaking to reporters here at an annual meeting of Republican governors, Jindal said such rhetoric could divide voting groups.

"I think that's absolutely wrong," Jindal said. "We have got to stop dividing the American voters. We need to go after 100 percent of the votes, not 53 percent. We need to go after every single vote. ... So I absolutely reject that notion, that description. I think it's absolutely wrong. I don't think that represents where we are as a party, where we're going as a party. That has got to be one of the most fundamental takeaways from this election."

Jindal, who is set to become chairman of the Republican Governors Association, has called on the party to reshape its tone when presenting ideas, especially to constituencies that traditionally vote Democratic.

"I'm passionate about it because I think it's extremely, extremely important," Jindal said. "This is just something that's fundamentally important for the future of our party."

Because McCain is so busy telling lies and trying to smear President Obama and Susan Rice he didn't even attend the hearing held by the committee he sits on. And he couldn't because then he'd have the facts which prove he's wrong.

On the Sunday talk shows, senior Republicans, former Romney surrogates and prominent conservatives piled on their defeated presidential nominee for telling donors that he lost because President Obama bought off minorities and young voters with “gifts.”

“It’s nuts,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on ABC’s “This Week.” “I mean, first of all, it’s insulting. … The job of a political leader in part is to understand the people. If we can’t offer a better future that is believable to more people, we’re not going to win.”

Rumored 2016 presidential hopefuls in the party saw an opportunity to distance themselves from Romney.

“I absolutely reject what he said,” said Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on “Fox News Sunday.” “We as a Republican Party have to campaign for every single vote. If we want people us we have to like them first. And you don’t start to like people by saying their votes were bought.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), an on-again, off-again advocate for comprehensive immigration reform, said Romney’s comments were especially damaging among Hispanics. He said Romney fueled the fire of their disenchantment with the GOP that grew when the ex-governor pushed a policy of “self-deportation” for illegal immigrants and their children.

“We’re in a big hole, we’re not getting out of it by comments like that. When you’re in a hole, stop digging. He keeps digging,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “We’re in a death spiral with Hispanic voters because of our rhetoric on immigration, and our candidate Romney and the primaries dug the hole deeper.”

Carlos Gutierrez, a top Hispanic surrogate and adviser to the Romney campaign, said he was “shocked” by the comments. “I don’t know if he understood that he was saying something that was insulting,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Romney was never beloved by the GOP establishment. But the Sunday show pile-on indicates that any good will he had among the party faithful is rapidly vanishing, and that he’s well on his way to pariah status with the party that so recently anointed him to lead them and the country.

“It’s been well said that you have a political problem when the voters don’t like you, but you’ve got a real problem when the voters think you don’t like them,” said conservative columnist George Will on ABC’s “This Week.” “Quit despising the American people.”

"I'm not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that's a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States," Rubio told GQ's Michael Hainey. "I don't think I'm qualified to answer a question like that. At the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all."

Rubio continued, refusing to take a stance on the planet's age, which scientists have long estimated at 4.54 billion years.

"Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I'm not sure we'll ever be able to answer that," he said. "It's one of the great mysteries."

Republicans have often been forced into an awkward balancing act when answering this question, having to take into account a large number of supporters who may take literally the biblical account that the earth's age is in the thousands of years.

However, while I find this hilarious its not the big news. The big news is there's no logical and reasonable way for conservative/Republican/Tea Baggers to claim that their conservative values and no tax increase agenda was not rejected as well. They may have managed to hang on to the House by spending billions of dollars, Jerrymandering congressional districts, more than a score of states with new voter suppression laws and voter purges, as well as a host of dirty tricks including misinforming voters of where, when, and what identification voters might need but they still lost eight seats.

Democrats sweep last undecided House races

WASHINGTON — Democrats claimed victory Monday in the final undecided House races of the 2012 election, as President Barack Obama’s party picked up a total of eight seats to narrow the Republican majority.

Two closely watched races in California saw Republicans Dan Lungren and Brian Bilbray concede defeat to Democratic challengers at the weekend, while Arizona’s Ron Barber, an ex-aide to Democrat Gabrielle Giffords who resigned this year after being wounded in a shooting, claimed victory to hold his seat.

A handful of other races were too close to call more than a week after the November 6 vote but they eventually went to the Democratic candidates, pushing their tally to 201 seats, party officials told AFP.
Republicans will still retain control of the House of Representatives, beginning the 113th Congress in January with 234 seats.

“It was beyond our expectations,” Jesse Ferguson of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said of the elections.

“It puts a real burden on (House) Speaker John Boehner and the Republican leadership, knowing that they can’t count on 100 percent of their own caucus on anything, to work across the aisle and find common ground with Democrats on some of the country’s most important issues.”

Congress has been sunk in gridlock for much of the past two years, amid partisan bickering that has left many observers alarmed at lawmakers’ inability to reach compromise.

Democrats tightened their grip in the Senate in the November 6 election, picking up an additional two seats to expand their majority to 55-45, including two independents who caucus with Democrats.
In one particularly divisive House contest, Tea Party-backed Republican incumbent Allen West of Florida has refused to concede against Democrat Patrick Murphy, even as election officials missed a Sunday deadline to report results of a two-day recount in the race.

Unofficial results had Murphy ahead by some 1,900 votes, and local media reported that lead increasing by 242 votes after the partial recount.

The missed deadline will lead to certification of the unofficial results on Tuesday, barring an unlikely emergency exemption granted by the state.

Murphy declared victory and attended freshman House orientation on Capitol Hill last week.

A final House race in Louisiana between two Republicans will be settled in a December runoff after neither gained 50 percent of the vote. The southern state lost a House seat due to slow population growth.

And, two, how do you solve a problem?"
Cantor continued: "And so if right now the question is how do you do that? Well, John Boehner went to the White House 10 days ago and said, 'hey, Republicans in the House are willing to put revenues on the table.' That was a big move, right? And we said we are going to do that in the name of trying to fix the problem to respond to the electorate that re-elected this president, but at the same time we say we weren't elected to raise taxes. We want to help people get back it to work."

Pressed on whether a potential deal might mean breaking the pledge, Cantor replied: " I haven't talked to Grover Norquist so I don't know what he wants to do with his pledge. What I know is the constituents that I represent, and I believe most American people, want to see, No. 1, more jobs created."

White House: Holding middle-class tax cuts hostage hurts economic growth

A new White House report outlines the economic danger of allowing automatic tax increases on income below $250,000 to take effect at the end of the year:

Americans could spend nearly $200 billion less next year on cars, clothes, furniture and other consumer products than they would otherwise if automatic tax increases take effect as currently scheduled, the White House warned in a report issued Monday morning.

Such a crimp on demand would curb the growth of real consumer spending by 1.7 percentage points in 2013 and slow the growth of the overall economy by 1.4 percentage points, according to the report prepared by the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.

The report focused entirely on the impact of Bush-era tax cuts expiring for middle-class taxpayers at the end of the year and a failure to adjust the Alternative Minimum Tax so that it does not suddenly apply to millions of taxpayers who have not paid it in the past. It made no effort to look at the economic impact of deep military and domestic spending cuts also due to take effect in the new year.

The Senate has already passed legislation that would continue current tax rates for all income below $250,000 and President Obama has said he would sign it, but House Republicans thus far have refused to act. The reason is simple: passing the Senate legislation would decouple the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy favored by the GOP from the middle-class tax cuts favored by Democrats and the president. Decoupling the tax cuts would take away the GOP's ability to hold the middle-class tax cuts hostage, effectively guaranteeing that the tax rate on income above $250,000 would return to Clinton-era levels.

Republicans say they supports extending middle-class tax cuts and are willing to raise revenue from higher income taxpayers, but unless and until they end the hostage crisis and agree to decouple the tax cuts, there's no reason to take them seriously.
