Curvy women have no place on the catwalk, iconic German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was quoted as saying, after a fashion magazine said it was banning skinny models in favour of "real women".
"No one wants to see curvy women," Lagerfeld was quoted as saying on the website of news magazine Focus on Sunday.
"You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly," he added.

The world of fashion is about "dreams and illusions", he said, dismissing as "absurd" the debate prompted by Brigitte magazine which said it would no longer feature professional models on its pages.
Brigitte, one of Germany's top women's magazines, said last week it would only publish photographs of "real women" after readers complained they could not identify with the models depicted.

The magazine's editor-in-chief Andreas Lebert told The Guardian last week that he was sick of having to retouch photos of underweight models.
"For years we have had to use Photoshop to fatten the girls up," he said. "Especially their thighs and decolletage. But this is disturbing and peverse, and what has it got to do with our real reader?"
He said he would invite German women to put themselves forward as models for the magazine. According to The Guardian he is likely to extend an invitation to Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The magazine will stop using professional models from 2010.

It depends on what you mean by curvy. I don't think there's a single guy out there who doesn't want to see a woman with a fit body and natural curves.

 

Well call me a rugged individualist but I like curvy women way better than skinny ones.

This guy needs to be a politician, his views are unrealistic and so far from the general consensus.

Ultimately, curvy has nowbecome a watchword for overweight women to feel better about themselves.

Example: in the first pose, Kelly Osbourne is curvy. In the second, she is overweight. Calling this second pose 'curvy' is a self-deluding lie.

 

I was thinking more along the lines of a splintered wooden stick, but that works, too!

 

An important distinction...

I still think that I'd rather see skinny models than curvy ones though. I just find thin (not skeletal, just thin) girls more attractive, and if they start using "normal" women in magazines (remembering that the average size in the uk is a 14)... A 14's fat if you're under 6 foot tall.

 

Ehh I don't think she's curvy, I think she's just got an average body.

I'm glad somebody gets what I'm talking about though. I certainly like curvy women, but then again I like women of all different types when they take care of themselves.

My example of a curvy woman would be like Salma Hayek just to name one.

 

I wouldn't call either of those examples 'curvy', either. Also, there is what; 50 pounds? between those two photos? She may have qualified as 'curvy' somewhere in the middle. But she's definitely 'slim' (not 'skinny') in the first, and, well, obese in the second.

 

Semantics, ultimately.

However, it is still disturbing to see the number of euphemisms that overweight women will conjure up to hide the uncomfortably truth; that they are the very obvious adherents to an ugly, unhealthy lifestyle: thick, curvy, phat... I mean - I always laugh when someone says they like their women 'thick'. Over here, thick means stupid.

 

Well, I couldn't find a picture that completely described it 100%. But trust me, I have seen so many women call themselves curvy and yet look like the second picture, that if any woman tells me she is curvy, I automatically assume that she is overweight until proven otherwise.

I'm seldom wrong, either. It's depressing.

On the other hand; a lot of these runway models being talked about here... let's just say they make Calista Flockhart (sp??) and Debra Messing look positively chubby. :excited:

 

The way I see it, if Kelly Osbourne was in the best shape she could ever be in, she would have average tits and an average ass to go with her average arms. That makes her body average. Julia-Louis-Dreyfuss(sp?) is a great example of this. In Seinfeld, she was like Kelly in the first pic, and now that she's all skinny, she's got tiny tits to go with her tiny arms.

Really, you can tell how somebody is going to age just by noticing certain things, and you can tell what kind of body that person has too. A good indicator is the arms/rest of torso/legs vs. tits and ass, and the way they're body is shaped. Every girl and even guy can have a great body in high school and early college, when everything looks as good as it possibly can, but it's different when you have to work hard to keep certain things looking as good.

Yeah I know. The unnecessary PC is kind of annoying and also very misleading.

It is hard to determine what "curvy" is as that is a word many very much over weight girls choose to describe themselves.

 

Regarding the magazine, the consumers will ultimately decide if they like the 'normal' looking women. If it takes off, no doubt it will be copied industry-wide. If it fails, the conversation will go by the wayside with all the emails of the 'normal' women who bitch about the models.
