All the U.S. has to do is slap an import tax on every thing coming into the U.S. from China.

 

There are two things wrong with that. First, it would raise the price of all consumer goods, and start a trade war that would make it more difficulty for American manufacturers to export what they manufacture.

Second, we need China's friendly cooperation. We need to make them want to do what we want them to do.

On the one hand the Chinese will not be coerced. On the other hand the Chinese will benefit if Dictator Kim is replaced by a client puppet dictator in North Korea who will do what they tell him to do, and who will not start a war.

History is moving in China's direction. The China do not need war in order to achieve world hegemony.

 

We can't make China want to help us. If that was possible we would not have the problem we have.

Our manufacturing jobs might come back.
Our manufactures do not export enough to China to make much difference in the first place compared to all of the loss of customers to goods from China.

Qatar is the staging country for the Air Force to send sorties to Syria. With 10,000 defence personnel Qatar could've made it very difficult for the US.

Most people seem to be screaming China must do something. But the last I heard it was not China that was blocking a UN resolution for new sanctions against North Korea. That was Russia. So why isn't Trump calling for more help from Russia to rein in their ally North Korea?

Also, you are correct in pointing out that the detonation altitude is a more relevant factor. Higher is better, in terms of damage caused, but only to a point. Just as there is a sweet spot in the inclination angle of a cannon launch, nukes have a "sweet spot" in terms of altitude-- a height at which maximal blast radius is effected.

Even in 1945, we understood this.

This is why the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombs were triggered by barometric altimeters. They did not detonate on impact. They detonated at a calculated optimal ALTITUDE.
