Trump right to take hard line on summit

Don’t water the weeds. It’s a good axiom for dealing with stubborn children and Kim Jong Un.

President Trump made the right move yesterday when he canceled next month’s summit with the North Korean dictator. In a letter to Kim, Trump wrote, “Based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting. Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place.”

The letter was in response to tough rhetoric by Choe Son Hui, a vice minister in the North Korean Foreign Ministry. Choe had choice words for Vice President Mike Pence, who, on Fox News earlier in the week, seemed to indicate that Kim Jong Un could meet a fate similar to Libya’s Col. Moammar Gadhafi, who was deposed and killed during the Libyan civil war in 2011.

“As a person involved in the U.S. affairs, I cannot suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing out from the mouth of the U.S. vice president,” Choe said. She also referred to Pence as a “political dummy.”

Her smack talk also took a threatening tone. “Whether the U.S. will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision and behavior of the United States.”

In his letter, President Trump responded sharply. “You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.”

In the second half of the letter President Trump took an uncharacteristically saccharine tone. “I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately, it is only that dialogue that matters. Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you. In the meantime, I want to thank you for the release of the hostages who are now home with their families. That was a beautiful gesture and was very much appreciated.”

He ended with a ray of hope. “If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write. The world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth. This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history. Sincerely yours, Donald J. Trump”

The president’s maneuver yesterday was the correct one and the letter was right on point. In the face of the threat of nuclear war by the North, Trump could not engage in a face-to-face meeting with their leadership.

Instead, he boxed Kim’s ears.

The play date was over. If Kim wished to apologize and re-engage, the president was willing to listen, but right now Kim was in “time out.”

In tone, the letter had the right amount of sweet and the right amount of salty to send a strong warning with a tinge of hope and optimism.

This is all gamesmanship and our side is winning. This week North Korea blew up its Punggye-ri nuclear test site. Earlier this month the three American hostages were released. If the United States walks away from the table now it can be considered a win.

The grip of the sanctions still has a forceful hold on North Korea and the regime is very likely to want to re-enter talks.

In scuttling the summit, President Trump has set the parameters of acceptable behavior for Kim Jong Un. Even though the United States uses threatening and tough language toward North Korea, it will not accept the same kind of rhetoric in return. The two countries are not equal. One is strong and one is weak.

One is like a parent and one is like a child.

North Korea offers measured response to the cancellation

Pyongyang, often known for its aggressive rhetoric, issued a strikingly conciliatory response to Trump's letter on Thursday, saying that it remained willing to talk with the U.S. president.

"We reiterate to the U.S. that there is a willingness to sit down at any time, in any way, to solve the problem," Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said in a statement carried by state-run media.

Trump highlighted the North's response in a tweet on Friday morning, calling it "warm and productive."
