I feel for those in the worst hit areas tonight ,
after being violently shaken awake at 12.02 this morning ,
and shaken every few minutes since and still being,
tonight they have a storm.
Gale force winds ,
heavy to torrential rains ,
destructive gusts ,
covering the whole damaged area most or all night.


Earlier
rain aproaching the area , about the level I crudely added the two black marks.

It is over them now , already raining.

its swinging or rotatating northward , so worst hit area may miss worst rain


that was 5pm , near ten now.
Wellington sure getting it.
Kaikoura may miss most , but the rest of the night yet.

My knowledge of the affect of that big quake is scant...I learned that a large area came up from the bay to become "land"...I'm not " on anything" and I mean no disrespect...

she was a doozy for sure
billions in property and infrastructure damage
Months and years of rebuilding.
at least months of alternatuve
"go around" transport , which will have to be via coastal shipping.

Billions of tons of rock n debris to be moved and miles of road and track to rebuild.
plus power , phone and water etc

there is near 100 km of coast like this , with road and rail literally jambed between mountains and beach

So much devastation and so many stories.
An example
Dairy farm with 1,000 cows to milk twice a day , every day , and they must be milked.
But ,
the milking shed and yards etc is destroyed. totally unusable
Within 24 hours all the cows have been relocated to farms all round the south , who have working sheds.
They will not be back for about a year.

After two more , 5.8 and 5.2
late this afternoon ,

and 8 story building in central Wellington is feared in iminent
danger of colapse.


On the tv you can actually see the glass stairwell has bowed and pulled away ,
and there is major structural failure about the fith floor.


the cordon has just now been pushed back , further away.

There is another that partially pancaked in the original quake.
Very lucky it was midnight and empty.

Last couple of times , and every time I have checked , aftershocks are still running at about or over 30 per hour.

 

How do you start
and where do you begin ?
Right now , with shakes up to 6+ ,
as close as 1 minute apart , and even simultaineous ,
they cant even get near.

Here you can see 2 huge slips just north and in sight of Kaikoura. (still totally cut off , except by air)
and there are numerous and bigger slides.

Trapped by slips and buckeled rails ,
and some of it still in a tunnel


and not only are some tunnels burried , but some are also at least partially colapsed.

 

First naval ship has arrived off Kaikoura.
She will survey to see how close in the next bigger ship , due in a couple of hours , can get.

note: there has been some uplift of the sea bed , and some new forshore created , so HMNZS Waikato has to survey the area before the bigger ships arrive , to be sure how close is safe.

It is the Whale Watch capital , so they can get quite close anyway , but all charts of very close in , are now obsolite.
Also a US navy ship has diverted and will be there tinight ,
and also an Austrailian war ship is
on its way.
All great , and they'll be greatly appreciated.
In spite of all day army and private chopper shuttle rescues yesterday , there are still over 700 tourists trapped in Kaikoura alone ,
short of water and all sorts.

There are pockets of people trapped all round the region.
They hope to get a few access roads "passable" in the next day or two.
