They're both bad.

The smart answer is fabric bags or metal baskets that the buyer purchases and reuses, and for the stores to either give a rebate for bringing your own, or simply refuse to provide free bags.

 

Can you even get plastic bags in the grocery stores any more

 

Plastic, when I don't use fabric bags, I use them for trash bags. And yes, you can get plastic in most states, I know North Carolina just passed a new law concerning them.

 

I just read

where one state passed a bag law, and it was overturned. Humbug!

 

You know that is something I haven't been asked in a very long time.
I do like reusing the plastic ones for small waste baskets throughout the house though.

 

I usually use the fabric bags (if I can remember to bring them), but both grocery stores I use the most don't even ask anymore, they always default to plastic. I'm usually broke, disgusted, and tired by the time I reach the checkout, so I never complain. Oh well.

 

Where I am they charge like 10 cents per plastic bag and sell the fabric ones really cheap, under a dollar. They also give you extra discount points for every fabric bag or basket you bring in to pack your groceries in, so it pays to use something other than the plastic ones.

 

Most of the grocery stores where I live only have plastic bags. I prefer paper bags to collect trash in.
