Now we find that the USA was tapping her calls. When people ask if I live in America, I say no I live in Georgia..

 

It appears that many Chileans do sadly miss Pinochet.
According to news reports some 60,000 mourners have said farewell to General Augusto Pinochet, many in tears as they filed past his glass-covered casket through the night and into yesterday’s dawn.


Other Chileans, however, bitterly recalled the man one official said would always be remembered as a “classic right-wing dictator”.


According to an official report, 3,197 people were killed for political reasons in the 17 years of Pinochet’s rule. More than 30,000 were tortured.

Yesterday’s ceremony followed a night of clashes that left 43 police officers injured and 99 demonstrators arrested. The scattered fights between Pinochet’s supporters and opponents capped a jubilant night for thousands who took to the streets to celebrate his death.

Observers in Santiago expressed surprise at the "return" of such public admiration for the former dictator and his right-wing ideology in the largest show of pro-Pinochet feeling since the return of democracy to the country 16 years ago.


After taking power in a military putsch ousting socialist Salvador Allende in 1973, Pinochet ruled Chile with an iron fist until 1990. Thousands of civilians were arrested during the regime for alleged political crimes.

Based on testimony from survivors, more than 3,500 people "disappeared" and at least 30,000 were tortured.

At the time of his death, the general was being formally prosecuted in three human rights cases and for the so-called Riggs case, under which Pinochet allegedly kept millions of dollars in secret bank accounts.

However, many in deeply-divided Chile consider him "a revolutionary who brought Chile democracy and welfare," as one of the people who participated in the funeral put it.

There is at least one book that claims to have proofs of this, more than just one, I have read.

. Not my intent to argue, but some of what I have read does seem to ring true.
