The horrendous crime behind the botched execution

The New York Times clearly wanted its readers to feel the pain of the victim. Here is how they began their front page story:

“As Clayton D. Lockett writhed and groaned…”

It was one of countless similar stories that ran all over the world.

They were about the controversy over an execution of a convicted murderer in Oklahoma.

Clayton Lockett, 38, was showcased as the victim of a botched execution. His vein reportedly collapsed as the first drug was being administered. Once that happened, as the Times put it: “Lockett writhed and groaned on the gurney after a large dose of sedatives had apparently not been fully delivered.”

There were more details about Lockett, the victim, dying 43 minutes later of cardiac arrest.

Lockett has since become a symbol of the horrors of capital punishment. There is outrage all over the globe. The Times had another story on just on that.

Of course, I understand the controversy. If the state is to carry out executions, they need to be controlled and quick.

But as a journalist, I was taken aback at the endless details about Clayton Lockett’s death — and the lack of detail about why he was being put to death. Most of the articles — even the longer ones — usually had one quick sentence about a young woman he murdered.

I think that’s a failure of journalism, so in my one small corner, I’d like to correct it.

Lockett murdered an Oklahoma girl named Stephanie Neiman. She was 19. It happened on June 3, 1999.

Stephanie was with an 18-year-old girlfriend driving to visit a male friend who lived with his 9-month-old daughter. They didn’t know that Clayton Lockett had just broken into that house with two accomplices. Lockett and the others had tied up the man and were beating him, saying he owed them money.

As soon as Stephanie and her girlfriend were inside, they were hostages, too. Stephanie had graduated high school two weeks before. She played the saxophone in the school band.

Lockett and the others beat Stephanie, and used duct tape to tie her hands. They used it to cover her mouth, too.

Then they repeatedly raped Stephanie’s 18-year-old friend.

Afterwards, they kidnapped all three adults and the child, putting them into Stephanie’s truck and driving to an isolated road.

Lockett threatened his hostages, asking if they planned to contact police.

When Stephanie at first wouldn’t agree to stay silent, Lockett shot her with a sawed-off shotgun. The shot didn’t kill her and she fell down screaming. The gun reportedly jammed, but Lockett got it working again. Then he shot her a second time. Stephanie stopped screaming but was still breathing.

Lockett ordered the other two victims to put her in a shallow grave, and then bury her. She was still breathing as she was buried.

Stephanie’s mother recently gave a victim’s impact statement for herself and husband Steve before the execution. She described the last 15 years of their life as “hell.”

"Every day we are left with horrific images of what the last hours of Stephanie's life was like,” she said. “Did she cry out for us to help her? We go through the motions of living, we eat, we sleep, Steve goes to work and comes home again. We exist."

She said Stephanie was their only child.

She also said this:

"God blessed us with our precious daughter, Stephanie, for 19 years,” she said. “Stephanie loved children. She worked in Vacation Bible School and always helped with our church nativity scenes. She was the joy of our life.”

This is not a column defending what I agree was a botched execution.

I just felt the coverage failed to paint a full picture of what Clayton Lockett did to get the death penalty. And I don’t understand why journalism has given him a thousand times more sympathy than the innocent girl he tortured and murdered.

His final moments aren’t the only ones we should be reading about.

i still believe that those that who act on illegal and otherwise violent means to extract a life from a victem for any reason other than either than self-deffense or justice should be executed by the family and friends of the killer and in the same brutal manner

this loser died because he took an innocent life in a fit of selfishness and deserved to be killed for his actions
there was nothing inhumane or cruel about it

 

You got to love the consideration he show a young woman that was brutally murdered by a monster. First he calls her chubby and lad. Then he uses her to make some petty point only he understands. That's showing real consideration to this victim and her family.
