Trump furious with White House communications staff response to Woodward book: ‘Bring back Hope Hicks’

According to a report on CNN, President Donald Trump is exceedingly displeased with his White House communications office — particularly head Bill Shine — over how they are pushing back against Bob Woodward’s expose on the inner working of the Trump Administration.

Addressing the steady drip-drip-drip of excerpts from Woodward’s book “Fear,” CNN host Victor Blackwell said that Trump is not happy with former Fox exec Shine, who he feels has not been as effective as former Trump confidante Hope Hicks.

“In Woodward’s tape recordings from the president last month, Trump basically calls up saying, ‘I wished we could have talked, why didn’t you call him?'” CNN regular Brian Stelter told the host. “Woodward catches him in a couple of contradictions saying, ‘I tried six different ways to go ahold of you and I was turned down, I was buffed.’ It might have been in the White House’s best interests to give him an interview and it sounds like Trump regretted not having a chance to talk to him.”

“The reporting is President Trump is disappointed with Bill Shine and the way the White House has responded to this new book,” Blackwell added. “A source tells us he [Trump] shouted out ‘Bring back Hope Hicks!’ Apparently, he preferred her response to [“Fire and Fury” author] Michael Wolfe.”

“The way you respond to Michael Wolfe is not the same way to respond to Bob Woodward, who I think has written books about nine presidents now,” Stelter laughed. “He has an enormous amount of credibility. When the president calls him an idiot and suggests he made up sources, that actually says more about the president than Woodward.”

The stress on Trump's machine

It's hard to overstate the extremity and variety of pressures bearing down on President Trump and his understaffed White House.

The bottom line: Taken together, it's a jaw-dropping list of problems, and Trump's "fine-tuned machine" is creaking under this stress. We're at a hinge point in the Trump presidency, and staff sound as unsettled as I've heard them in the 19 months since he took office.

What Trump is facing:

Midterm elections that, according to polls, will likely flip the House into Democratic control. Here's a long list of likely investigations awaiting Trump.

Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen and campaign chairman Paul Manafort are going to prison.

Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have granted immunity to Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization's chief financial officer and the man who knows more than anyone about Trump's business dealings. We don't yet know exactly what Weisselberg has offered the prosecutors in return for their kindness.

Trump has grown to resent and distrust his White House Counsel, Don McGahn, who has spent hours cooperating with Robert Mueller's team.

McGahn leaves this fall and he leaves behind an office unprepared to deal with the blizzard of subpoenas, investigations and possible impeachment proceedings that likely await it next year. Almost all of McGahn's deputies have already gone.

Bob Woodward's book hits the stands on Tuesday. Trump's advisers have spent the past few days reading a PDF of the book, and the president now knows that some of his previously trusted White House aides play starring roles in Woodward's narrative. Trump is privately furious at Gary Cohn and Rob Porter, and sources with direct knowledge of Trump's thinking tell me it's possible he publicly attacks Porter and Cohn this week.

The New York Times published an op-ed from an anonymous "senior administration official" who claims to be part of a wide-reaching resistance to Trump's presidency from inside his own administration. That op-ed, coupled with the Woodward book, inflamed Trump's paranoia about a "Deep State" working to undermine him.

The White House press and communications teams are very thin, after a handful of staff resigned or were forced out. They are wrestling with a firehose of bad news.

Fact check: Is Trump right on a 100-year record for GDP and unemployment?

President Donald Trump is fudging the facts regarding jobs, the economy and the social safety net as he seeks to dismiss his critics in recent days.

He claims GDP growth has exceeded the unemployment rate for the first time in a century, when in fact is it has done so repeatedly since the 1940s. He also insists that Social Security and Medicare are becoming stronger under his watch when the most recent government report shows the financial condition of both programs worsening. On the economy, his claims of spurring the strongest U.S. growth ever fall short of reality.

The statements -- many of them made through Mr. Trump's twitter handle -- were among varied misrepresentations from the White House coming in a remarkable week after an anonymous senior official went public about an effort within the administration to thwart his agenda. The president also faces the special counsel's continuing Russia investigation, fewer than 60 days before November's midterm elections.

A look at the rhetoric and how it compares with reality:

The economy and unemployment
MR. TRUMP: "The GDP Rate (4.2%) is higher than the Unemployment Rate (3.9%) for the first time in over 100 years!" -- tweet Monday.

MR. TRUMP: "We are breaking all Jobs and Economic Records." — tweet Saturday.

MR. TRUMP: "The Economy is booming like never before, Jobs are at Historic Highs." — tweet Thursday.

THE FACTS: The economy, though healthy, has been in better shape at many times in the past. GDP growth has surpassed the unemployment rate multiple times since the 1940s.

Economic growth reached 4.2 percent at an annualized rate in the second quarter, while the unemployment rate stands at 3.9 percent. Yet GDP growth has exceeded the unemployment rate more than a dozen times since the late 1940s, such as during the economic expansions of the 1950s and the late 1990s.

So far, the economy is growing at a modest rate compared with previous economic expansions. In the late 1990s, growth topped 4 percent for four straight years, from 1997 through 2000. In the 1980s expansion, growth even reached 7.2 percent in 1984.

The unemployment rate of 3.9 percent is strong but it's not at the best point ever. It is near an 18-year low. The all-time low came in 1953, when unemployment fell to 2.5 percent during the Korean War. Meanwhile, a greater percentage of Americans held jobs in 2000 than now.

As a whole, the economy is in its 10th year of growth, a recovery that began under President Barack Obama, who inherited the Great Recession. The data show that the falling unemployment rate and gains in home values reflect the duration of the recovery, rather than any major changes made since 2017 by the Trump administration.

Medicare and Social Security
MR. TRUMP: "We're saving Social Security. The Democrats will destroy Social Security. We're saving Medicare. The Democrats want to destroy Medicare. ...We will keep it going. We're making it stronger. We're making Social Security stronger." — remarks Wednesday.

MR. TRUMP, promoting Montana Republican Matt Rosendale's Senate campaign: "I'm going to protect your Social Security. We're going to take care of your Social Security. Matt Rosendale is going to make sure we're not touching your Social Security and your Medicare is only going one way. That's stronger." — remarks at Montana rally Thursday.

THE FACTS: Mr. Trump hasn't made Medicare and Social Security stronger.

The government's annual trustees reports on the programs released in June shows the financial condition of both worsening significantly since last year. The projected insolvency for Social Security stayed unchanged — in 2034 — but Medicare's moved three years closer, to 2026.

Both programs also will start tapping their reserves this year, meaning that income from payroll taxes and interest earned by the Social Security and Medicare trust funds will no longer cover costs. That threshold was still a few years away in last year's report. As a result, Social Security and Medicare will need a $416 billion transfer from the government's general revenues this year, when the federal deficit is already rising.

Last year's Republican tax bill, which cut taxes on Social Security benefits, helped exacerbate the shortfall. So did the Trump-supported repeal of the individual mandate in so-called Obamacare. The repeal promises to increase the number of people without health insurance and therefore Medicare payments for uncompensated medical care.

Mr. Trump campaigned on a promise not to cut Social Security or Medicare, but he hasn't offered a blueprint for either program. Democrats want to expand the social safety net by spending more.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has argued that tax cuts, rolling back regulations and better trade agreements could boost economic growth and help stabilize Medicare and Social Security. But nonpartisan government experts who produced the annual Social Security assessment didn't seem to accept that, forecasting "sustained moderate economic growth."

Trade
MR. TRUMP: "'Ford has abruptly killed a plan to sell a Chinese-made small vehicle in the U.S. because of the prospect of higher U.S. Tariffs.' CNBC. This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!" — tweet Sunday.

THE FACTS: It's not true that Trump's taxes on Chinese imports will now mean the Focus Active can be built in the U.S.

Citing Trump's new tariffs, Ford on Aug. 31 said it was dropping plans to ship the hatchback vehicle to the United States from China.

But Ford said in a statement Sunday "it would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the U.S.," given forecast yearly sales below 50,000. For now, that means Ford simply won't sell the vehicle in the United States.

Jimmy, very glad you found this and shared it.
Common wisdom says that if an incumbent economy is healthy at their reelection, they stand a far better chance of being reelected; economy is the best indicator of an incumbent's chance of being reelected.

Issues are not nearly as relevant.
The opposing candidate(s) are not nearly as relevant.

As Bill Clinton said, "it's the economy stupid".

Now.
Unsupporters have indeed been spouting since Trump was elected that he inherited a strong economy and should not claim any part of the current economy as his own. Even President Obama himself said it was his economy, not Trump's.

Well, no.

This 8 minute video puts lie to the unsupporter assertion that it is Obama's economy, not Trump's.
In particular, at about 5:16 we learn that workers are reentering the labor force and finding good paying jobs. This trend more than anything should lay to rest the lie that Obamas, not Trumps, economy is what we are enjoying just now.

An estimated 1.5 Million Americans were driven from the labor force by Obama's "kill em with kindness" policies, ending up on Social Security disability, welfare, and food stamps. They are being sucked up, reemployed, and taken off the public dole by an economy that cannot find enough workers to fill available jobs.

This is but one example of the lies of unsupporters where Trump is concerned.

One does not need to like the man, (in fact might despise him) to recognize that he is doing what he said he would do.

Two polls put Trump's approval rating below 40%

Two polls released Monday (from Quinnipiac University and CNN/SSRS) put President Trump's approval rating below 40%, despite Americans' satisfaction with strong economic growth.

Why it matters: Voters seem certain the U.S. economy is strong, but as the midterm elections approach, "a majority of voters either do not associate [the economy] with Trump, the Republican Party's leading figure, or disapprove of the president for other reasons," per CNBC. And while November is still weeks away, these figures should serve as a red flag to the administration.

Key findings:
Quinnipiac University poll:

Trump's approval dropped to 38%, down from 41% last month.

70% of those surveyed said the economy is "good" or "excellent."

Respondents gave Trump the lowest rating for honesty since he entered office — 32%.

When asked if Trump is intelligent, 51% said yes, a new low.

CNN/SSRS poll:

Respondents rated Trump's approval at 36%, down from 42% last month.

The drop in approval ratings was the most significant among independent voters: 31%, down from 47%.

32% say they see the president as honest and trustworthy — down six percentage points since March.

Only 36% said Trump "cares about people like you" — another new low.

Poll: Majority believes top Trump aides work behind his back to rein him in

Most Americans believe President Trump's aides work behind his back to rein him in, according to a Quinnipiac University National Poll released Monday.

Fifty-five percent of respondents told pollsters they believe the anonymous allegations put out in a New York Times op-ed last week that senior aides to the president work to thwart his excesses and curb his worst instincts.

However, 51 percent also told Quinnipiac that they disapproved of the op-ed's author writing anonymously, compared to 38 percent who approved.

"American voters believe those tales of intrigue coming from the Trump White House, but they think it's wrong to tell those tales anonymously," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Though the majority of Americans believes The New York Times op-ed, which sharply criticizes Trump's "amorality," the survey did not reveal a tremendous change in the president's approval numbers from August or June.

Fifty-four percent of respondents said they disapprove of Trump and 38 percent approved in the poll released Monday.

The Quinnipiac University National Poll reported Monday was conducted from September 6-9 and surveyed 1,038 voters over the phone. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

The numbers: American manufacturers are on a roll: Business conditions surged in August to a 14-year high, according to a a survey of industry executives.

The Institute for Supply Management said its manufacturing index jumped to a 14-year high of 61.3% last month from 58.1% in July. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had forecast the index to total 57.9%.

Readings over 50% indicate more companies are expanding instead of shrinking.

What happened: The ISMâ€™s new-orders index climbed 3.2 points to 65.1% and the employment gauge rose 2 points to 58.5%. And 16 of the 18 industries tracked by ISM reported expanding in August.

The ISM index is compiled from a survey of executives who order raw materials and other supplies for their companies. The gauge tends to rise or fall in tandem with the health of the economy.

Big picture: Growth in the U.S. economy exploded in the spring and the third quarter that got underway in July is also shaping up to be a good one. The economy is firing on almost all cylinders, though the persistent threat of a broader trade war continues to threaten recent gains.

Jobless claims lowest level since 1969

New claims rose by just 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 213,000 last week, the Labor Department said Thursday. After three consecutive weeks of declines, economists had forecast a rise to 214,000, according to Bloomberg.

Jo0bless claims are an indication of layoffs and have been closely watched this year for signs that trade disputes might weigh on the U.S. labor market. So far, there are no signs that tariffs have cost the U.S. economy any jobs.

These two charts disprove White House claim Trump improved the economy — he actually slowed it

President Donald Trump boasted about economic numbers on Monday. A newsletter sent out to his supporters said:

“President Donald J. Trump’s critics are attempting a neat trick: After months of denying America’s recent economic success, they are now owning up to it—and reassigning credit to the Obama Administration,” The letter said.

On Twitter, John Aravosis, digital strategist fact-check the president with graphs of his own.

“Here’s what Trump is now calling “an economic turnaround” — an economy and stock market that had been growing for 7 years before Trump got there. It’s simply amazing how much Trump Republicans lie to their voters,” he tweeted.
