Pentagon approves plan to shift $1.5B for wall along US-Mexico border

The Pentagon has approved a plan to spend an additional $1.5 billion to build 80 more miles of wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a U.S. defense official confirmed to Fox News Friday.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan approved the re-allocation of funds, which were originally earmarked for support of Afghan security forces and other projects, to help pay for the wall along the southern border.

"Today, I authorized the transfer of $1.5 billion toward the construction of more than 80 miles of border barrier," he said. "The funds were drawn from a variety of sources, including cost savings, programmatic changes, and revised requirements, and therefore will have minimal impact on force readiness."

In March, Shanahan approved the first transfer of Defense Department dollars and redirected $1 billion to help build nearly 60 miles of wall in Yuma, Ariz. and El Paso, Texas.

The combined total of $2.5 billion is in response to President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the border.

But the plan to divert Pentagon funding has sparked criticism from congressional Democrats, who accused Shanahan of not seeking approval to “reprogram” the funds without congressional authority. Shanahan and other senior defense officials claimed in response they did not have to get permission from Congress despite the objections from Democratic lawmakers.

 

Trump campaign raising big bucks from women

President Trump’s early fundraising numbers show he not only has a stockpile of cash -- raising over $30 million in the first quarter -- but is doing particularly well among one donor demographic: women.

According to a recently released analysis from the Center for Responsive Politics, 45 percent of Trump’s donations during the fundraising period came from women.

That would be the third-highest percentage among all 2020 candidates. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., took the top spot with 52 percent of donations coming from female donors and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., came in second with 49 percent of her donations coming from women. CRP analyzed data for itemized donations over $200.

The campaign also points out that Trump reported more female donors than any other candidate -- with 10,329 women donating to his campaign, followed by Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., with 3,850 donors and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., with 3,271 donors. This is somewhat to be expected, however, since Trump is the incumbent Republican candidate while Democrats are locked in a crowded primary and splitting the vote -- and the donor pool -- for now.

Watch most cable or network news shows and the message is clear -- President Donald Trump is unpopular, especially compared to the dozens of fresh faces attempting to challenge him for the White House in 2020. Some of the faces are not so fresh as three of the leading contenders -- Biden, Sanders, and Warren are septuagenarians.

Despite the exonerating Mueller report, Trump is still on the ropes, about to be impeached, a Russian agent, and so on. Trump is also a Nazi, racist, homophobe, Islamophobe, and sexist pig. Nobody likes him. At least that’s what CNN says.


If this was truly the case, Trump should be polling in the low 30s at best, with most of the country giving him and his administration a thumbs down on performance and results. Yet reality is far different. In the media bubble, where journalists all live in the same neighborhoods, kids attend the same schools, all go to the same parties and belong to the same tennis and fitness clubs, there are no MAGA hats to be seen.

Outside the bubble, the picture is far different, even if the smart set at MSNBC and the New York Times choose not to see it. What do opinion polls say?

Rasmussen has the well-deserved reputation as the most accurate pollster, based on being the closest of all major polling organization in predicting the results of the 2016 presidential election.

In their daily presidential tracking poll, as of Friday April 5, President Trump had a 51 percent total approval number. Most of this calendar year, despite the constant drumbeat of Russian collusion, his approval number has been in the mid to high 40s, ranging from a low of 43 percent to a high of 52 percent since January 1.

For comparison, President Obama, exactly eight years ago on April 5, 2011, was at 47 percent approval, with numbers ranging from the mid to high 40s, occasionally hitting 50 percent, much the same as President Trump.

At first glance, one might say both presidents were equally popular at the same points of their respective presidencies. And both went on to be reelected for a second term. Fair enough -- but there is more.

What shapes public opinion in significant part? The media. What has the media’s role been in influencing opinion during the Obama versus Trump presidencies?

Media coverage of President Trump has been almost exclusively negative. NewsBusters reported 90 percent negative coverage of Trump during 2018, matching similarly negative coverage in 2017. But without effect, as they note.

According to Pew Research, another polling firm, news stories about Trump were only 5 percent positive in 2017, compared to 42 percent positive for President Obama in 2009. And yet in public opinion polls such as Rasmussen, the two presidents poll similarly, with Trump having a slight edge.

 

Just funny as fuck. Rasmussen very well deserved reputation is for being skewed hard right. And even in Rasmussen polls Trump is -8 today, 45 approval 53. And Trump is -8,9, 44 approval and 52.9 disapprove in RealClear Politics average of polls.

And in the meantime Trump is too fucking lazy and incompetent to nominate people to head multiple law enforcement agencies.

How's that for law and order.
