New Pentagon report blames Trump troop withdrawal for ISIS surge in Iraq and Syria

A new report released by the Department of Defense this week revealed that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been emboldened by the partial removal of U.S. troops from Syria and policy shifts in Iraq.

The report, released by the Pentagon's inspector general, details how the drawdown of U.S. troops has forced the Trump administration to rely on third-party monitoring of some areas, including a refugee camp set up by U.S.-backed forces.

The scaling back of U.S. forces, the report continued, has allowed ISIS forces in the area to recruit new members and grow their forces without U.S. interference.

"According to [joint task force officials], the drawdown of U.S. forces in Syria also reduced the ability of [the U.S.-backed mission] to maintain 'visibility' at the al Hol IDP camp, forcing it to rely on third-party accounts of the humanitarian and security situation there," the report reads.

"[The task force] said that it lacks the resources to monitor the camp directly, and that the SDF was only capable of providing 'minimal security'—a deficiency that [officials] said has created conditions that allow ISIS ideology to spread 'uncontested' in the camp," the Pentagon continued.

The buildup of ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq comes after the Trump administration and U.S.-backed forces had pushed the terror group out of its last major holdings in Syria earlier this year, forcing the group's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, into hiding and driving the group underground.

Local officials now worry that the group's ideology is being spread among inhabitants of refugee camps along the Syrian border where families of ISIS fighters and some former fighters themselves now are staying.

President Trump announced the partial removal of U.S. troops from Syria in December, a move that caused the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis.

He backed off of the move in February, agreeing to leave roughly 400 of 2,000 troops in the region.

In March, the White House declared that 100 percent of ISIS-held territory in Syria had been eliminated.

Trump and Scaramucci Exchange Fire in Twitter Spat: ‘You Are Losing Your Fastball’

President Donald Trump is now firing back at Anthony Scaramucci, he of the infamous 11-day White House stint in summer 2017, for his critical comments on TV.

Trump ripped Scaramucci over the weekend and said he was “quickly terminated (11 days) from a position that he was totally incapable of handling” and now spends his time on TV “as the all time expert on ‘President Trump.'”

Scaramucci responded by saying “eventually he turns on everyone and soon it will be you and then the entire country.” He said that while he’s supported the president, he has “recently” made unacceptable comments he couldn’t accept.

Now the Mooch is even floating the possibility of the GOP looking at a change at the top of the ticket in 2020. In response to people making the obvious point that, well, Trump has not changed at all, Scaramucci argued that POTUS is moving on a “degrading slope.”

And now this afternoon Trump has fired back, tweeting that Scaramucci “desperately wanted to be” in his administration and saying he’s “only upset that I didn’t want him back.”

Scaramucci was quick to respond, calling it a “very weak troll”:

Trump Team Terrified Tanking Economic Numbers Will Be the End of His Presidency

President Donald Trump launched a massive, nonsensical tweetstorm Thursday morning, after a Wednesday evening Fox News poll revealed both his approval and disapproval numbers are almost the worst they’ve ever been, and as his China trade war is destroying markets worldwide. The DOW dropped 800 points Wednesday, and DOW futures are swinging “wildly.” Reports from inside the White House say aides are terrified that the economic numbers will be the end of his presidency.

Fox News attempted to minimize the bad polling news for Trump by wrapping it inside the public’s response to recent mass shootings, but those numbers are also bad for the President – with public opinion on policy directly contradicting the White House narrative.

Trump’s disapproval is now at 56% – a five point jump from just one month ago. Just 43% approve, down from 46%. Notice Fox News tucks this key fact into its analysis: “Record numbers of men (53 percent), white men (46 percent), and independents (64 percent) disapprove.“

Here’s how Fox News finally introduced the bad polling numbers for President Trump – after more than a dozen paragraphs and several graphics:

Meanwhile, the president’s job ratings are increasingly negative in the shooting aftermath, as 59 percent say Trump is “tearing the country apart,” compared to 31 percent who feel he’s “drawing the country together.” Two years ago it was 56-33 percent (August 2017).

Sixty-five percent of Republicans and 54 percent of conservatives think he’s drawing the country together, while 92 percent of Democrats, 74 percent of non-whites, 59 percent of independents, and 53 percent of whites say tearing the country apart.

Overall, 56 percent of voters disapprove of Trump’s performance, up from 51 percent in July. Record numbers of men (53 percent), white men (46 percent), and independents (64 percent) disapprove. His disapproval rating has only been higher once: 57 percent in October 2017.

Currently, 43 percent of voters approve of Trump, down from 46 percent last month.

Meanwhile, Axios early Thursday morning ran this bit of troubling news on how terrified Trump’s aides are:

Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, are the three states that turned Hillary Clinton’s nearly 3 million popular vote win into an Electoral College win for Trump.

One of Shooters best high school friends (who also ran river with him) discovered she had a brain tumor that eventually killed her. She didn't have health insurance when she got sick, so the next 5 years of medical bills were on her and her husband. It took him 10 years after she died to pay it off, but he did, and with very little help from anyone else. He did it running rivers.

Let's not be disingenuous, eh? I'm not triggered, and you know it. You're the one that went to other threads, hooting about GoFundMes.

I'm showing you that your position on health care is ill-formed.

People in good jobs - even the best jobs - are threatened financially by health emergencies. It happens a lot. Like, all the time. to pretend it doesn't, or even worse, that somehow people are at fault for not planning for it, is utterly ridiculous.

You could have cheaper healthcare. Like, probably better than half the cost. Premiums paid for by taxes collected via payroll. Everybody else is covered automatically. All you need is to open your mind, have a little bit of faith, and drop the 'fuck everybody else' attitude.

And, your money would be going toward bettering services for yourself and your brethren, instead of going into the coffers of private healthcare companies.

Trump wants to buy Greenland — and has tasked White House counsel with figuring out how: report

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump has asked his advisers whether it would be possible for the United States to buy the island of Greenland, and has asked White House Counsel Pat Cipollone if there’s any legal way to do so.

His advisers reportedly are split on the idea, with some of them thinking that acquiring Greenland and its resources would be a brilliant idea, while others have said that there is no way it would be able to happen.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, whose population of 56,000 people broadly have freedom to govern themselves independently, except on foreign policy and national security. America already has access to Greenland as part of a defense treaty with Denmark, and the U.S. military operates a missile detection base there above the Arctic Circle.

The State Department did not respond to requests for comment.

There are two economic indicators that are worse than others. And a drop in manufacturing is one of them. And a decline in manufacturing is usually tied to a drop in consumer confidence. Which are both predictors of a recession.

And Trump and the GOP and Trump supporters have no one to blame but themselves. They pumped the economy up with a trillion dollar stimulus in a time of prosperity. And what goes up must come down and the fall will be further.

Manufacturing shrinks, raising questions for Trump

The risks of an economic recession are on the rise, but the country's manufacturing sector is already there.

And for President Trump, who promised to end the “American carnage” of “rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation,” that could be political trouble.

The manufacturing sector shrunk by 1.9 percent in the first quarter of the year, and another 1.2 percent in the second quarter. In July, it is estimated that it contracted 0.4 percent. A recession occurs when an economy contracts in two consecutive quarters.

Trump won the Electoral College and White House by becoming the first Republican in a generation to sweep the states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

He’ll likely need to do so again in 2020 to win reelection, and the bad economic news in manufacturing could be a dilemma in these Trump states.

Trump vowed to help manufacturers, and the sector did enjoy a banner year in 2018 after Trump’s corporate tax cuts took effect.

Manufacturing jobs grew at an average rate of 22,000 a month in 2018.

This year, even as the sector have contracted, manufacturers have continued to add jobs, but at a much slower rate of 8,000 per month.

The slowdown is attributed in part to growing trade tensions and slumping growth in foreign markets which has hit manufacturing around the world.

“It’s pretty clear, not just in the U.S. but globally, that the manufacturing sector is contracting right now,” said Chad Moutray, chief economist of the National Association of Manufacturers.

Trump’s escalating trade war with China, in particular, is dragging on the industry, according to an analysis from Moody’s Analytics last week.

Trump in July announced a new round of tariffs on China, raising doubts that a deal could be struck before the 2020 election. Earlier this month, Trump decided to delay and cancel a handful of the tariffs, pushing them to December 15 instead of September 1 to avoid raising prices during the holiday shopping season.

Yet the tariffs are still taking a toll, raising the cost of Chinese imports, some of which are used by U.S. manufacturers.

The tariffs raised costs for 79 percent of regional manufacturers surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Almost half increased their selling prices as a result.

It’s not just trade that has been a problem for U.S. manufacturers.

While the recent downturn in manufacturing can be linked to specific policies, the sector’s decline is part of a larger trend, according to Urban Institute fellow Stephen Rose.

“A lot of people try to blame it on trade, and that’s not unimportant, but an important thing to understand is what’s happened with productivity,” he said.

Better technology and automation have led manufacturers to cut jobs over the last half century. Many of the jobs that still exist in the sector are now white-collar jobs that require college degrees.

“In the past manufacturing was key for non-college educated men. Today there’s been more of a shift to other jobs,” Rose says, pointing to industries such as construction and transportation, which are harder to automate.

In his estimation, the manufacturing sector can at best expect to hold on to its current place in the economy, but will likely continue to shrink in the future

That could create a vulnerability for Trump, who continued to tout his record on manufacturing this week at a Royal Dutch Shell Plc plant outside Pittsburgh.

“Factory floors across this land are once more crackling with life,” he said. “Our steel mills are fired up and blazing bright. The assembly lines are roaring.”

Manufacturing accounted for more than double the share of employment in counties Trump won in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, according to a Brookings Institution analysis. If people in the industry are feeling pain come November, it could deal a fatal blow to Trump’s reelection bid.

Some of Trump’s potential Democratic opponents in 2020 are sensing an opportunity.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) specifically pointed out the slump in manufacturing in a Medium post predicting doom and gloom for the economy.

“For the first time ever, the average hourly wage for manufacturing workers has dropped below the national average,” she wrote of the current manufacturing recession.

“Trump’s trade war with China threatens American manufacturing and has already hurt American companies that investors think of as “industry bellwethers,” while feeding an all-time economic slowdown in China that could have dramatic ripple effects on the American economy,” she added.

While Warren called for a slew of changes, among them investing $2 trillion in green manufacturing, industry leaders say they are more concerned about a handful of proximate issues.

“We need certainty when it comes to trade. We need a trade deal with China. We need USMCA passed. We need a functioning Ex-Im bank,” said Moutray, referencing the United States Mexico Canada Agreement, an update on the North American Free Trade Agreement, as well the Export-Import Bank.

But equally important, he said, is keeping the corporate tax rate low, something he worries Democrats will reverse.

Moutray said that even if manufacturing continues to decline, voters in manufacturing states may not punish Trump. The president’s supporters, he said, are likely to approve of Trump’s efforts for the sector and the boom that came in 2018.

“For the most part, they’re going to give the president a lot of credit there,” he said.

But Trump and Republicans can’t be too sure either.

“On the flip side, trade is creating a lot of anxiety,” Moutray said.
