How To Discredit A Government In Eight Words
“It is very biblical to enforce the law.”

In 2013, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) became a celebrity in Egypt. Gohmert, a hardline conservative, had been issuing wild conspiracy theories from the House floor for years.

He had claimed that terrorists were sending pregnant women to the United States to give birth, so their children could come back as citizens in 20 to 30 years and “help destroy our way of life.” He signed a letter suggesting the Obama administration had been infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood.

“Barack Hussein Obama,” Gohmert once said, “has helped jumpstart a new Ottoman Empire.” He accused the former president of supporting international terrorism.

After Egypt’s military ousted the democratically elected Mohammed Morsi, Egyptian state television began broadcasting video of some of Gohmert’s most inflammatory remarks. The congressman became the face of a new conspiracy theory that said the United States was in league with the Muslim Brotherhood in a plot to destroy Egypt. People living in Cairo didn’t know that in Washington, Gohmert was the butt of jokes, an irrelevant crank. Overseas, his status as a congressman gave his words far more weight than they carried domestically.

President Donald Trump is a crank, but he is not irrelevant. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a cold-blooded liar, but she speaks for the United States government, and as a result, is one of the most prominent Christian voices in the country. And so her insistence Thursday ― echoing Attorney General Jeff Sessions ― that the Trump administration’s decision to forcefully separate young children from their would-be immigrant parents was “very biblical,” carries a special significance not only at home, but abroad.

“There’s a deep irony to see a patently cruel policy being justified in religious terms from a country that has often been critical of religious-based governance in other contexts,” notes Michael Hanna, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, a D.C. think tank. “If we think about [Sanders’] words coming out of the mouth of a Muslim political figure, we can imagine the outrage that would ensue.”

I am confident that even today, most Americans and most American Christians are appalled by Trump’s policy, which White House Chief of Staff John Kelly publicly announced last month as “a tough deterrent” against those hoping to enter the country. Conservative religious organizations have roundly condemned the action, citing the sanctity of the family and the moral responsibility to protect people fleeing violence. The National Association of Evangelicals, the Southern Baptist Convention and leading Catholic Bishops have all raised an outcry.

“Pretty much every strain of Christianity in the United States ― which cannot agree on a bunch of things ― came out and said this policy is wrong,” notes Matthew Soerens, director of church mobilization at the evangelical organization World Relief. “And the attorney general came out and said, ‘No, you read the Bible wrong.’”

But all of that is background noise when American political leaders present a religious justification for an authoritarian program. If Louie Gohmert can make a public relations mess in Egypt as a backbencher, the consequences of the Trump administration’s new theological musings are potentially disastrous. Bad policies can eventually be reversed. But some words can’t be taken back.

DHS secretary was flown to the White House because Sarah Sanders didn’t want to do the briefing on child separation

It was rumored by White House sources that Sarah Huckabee Sanders will leave the White House by the end of the year, but she didn’t want to come to the White House podium on Monday.

According to a White House official, Sanders knew there would be questions about the administration’s policies on separating children from their families coming over the border. For that reason the White House flew in Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

“Secretary Nielsen met with POTUS at 3 pm over illegal immigration crisis,” tweeted CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny. “The meeting ran overtime, and at times was tense among all participants and POTUS, which is why briefing was repeatedly delayed, several WH officials say.”

‘So many lies’: Internet unleashes on DHS Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen’s ‘propaganda’ claim there’s no policy on separating children

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said at the White House press briefing Monday that there is no policy that mandates children be ripped from the arms of their parents. The claim, and her press briefing in general, sent the internet into a rage at what they called lies.

The laws about those undocumented immigrants crossing the border aren’t new, but the White House’s “no tolerance” policy has resulted in the crisis. Nielsen claimed that families were separated under previous administrations, which is factually inaccurate, according to CBS News reporter Rebecca Kaplan. In a tweet, she cited a court case in which President Barack Obama’s DHS secretary “came under fire” for keeping families together.

Here’s how the internet unleashed hellfire on Nielson:

Sarah Sanders ‘tired’ of defending Trump as Stephen Miller’s gloating over child jails infuriates West Wing staff

Trump’s West Wing is in chaos amidst the fiery blowback over the administration’s child internment camps, according to a new report from Vanity Fair.

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is dodging her responsibility to do press briefings because of the policy, which she does not support.

“She’s tired of taking on water for something she doesn’t believe in,” a source told Vanity Fair.

On the other side, adviser Stephen Miller is taking sadistic joy in seeing photos of crying children and triggering outrage among liberals and traditional conservatives.

“Stephen actually enjoys seeing those pictures at the border,” a Trump adviser told Vanity Fair. “He’s a twisted guy, the way he was raised and picked on. There’s always been a way he’s gone about this. He’s Waffen-SS.”

There is no graceful exit for Trump and he’s growing angry as Democrats refuse to bend to his will, sources said. He continues to think he can blame them and avoid the blowback.

“He doesn’t like this policy, and he knows it’s not helping him,” said a source who Vanity Fair has spoken to him on the subject. “But he can’t get within him that this is a problem, and he needs to take ownership of it.”

Democratic lawmaker calls for ethics investigation of Sarah Sanders for using White House Twitter account to attack restaurant

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) called upon the Office of Government Ethics to investigate White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders for using her official White House Twitter account to attack the Virginia restaurant where she was asked to leave.

During the panel discussion with host Jake Tapper, conservative David Urban lamented the booting of Sanders and her family, saying it was sad day for the country.

“I think it is sad. We are completely at opposite sides of many, many issues, most issues and we get along fine,” he told his fellow panelists. “You can have civil discourse in America and disagree. America should be a market place of ideas. You shouldn’t be asked to leave a restaurant. If you do, if the people don’t want to frequent her restaurant because of her views, that’s great.”

As the conversation turned to Huckabee Sanders’ father — former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R) — over a racist tweet he made on Saturday aimed at House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D), Lee addressed both of the Huckabees.

‘It was disgusting when you look at this mentality and how he tweeted that picture,” she explained. “But also with regard to Sarah, she used her government account for taking on this private restaurant, a private business.”

“I personally think she should be referred to the Office of Government Ethics,” she continued.

“You think that is unethical?” host Tapper pressed.

“Yeah, if you use a government account to attack a private business on personal time, that’s not right, ” she replied as Urban – who was sitting next to her — grimaced.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ complaints over being denied service at the Red Hen restaurant in Virginia were put to the test during a Tuesday fact-check by MSNBC anchor Chris Jansing.

“I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so,” Sanders claimed.

“I just want to play a few little clips from the press briefing room,” Jansing noted, playing clips of Sanders belittling the press corps.

“I want to say, I worked in that room for 2.5 years and I have the highest respect for the level and quality of the journalists who work there every single day,” Jansing explained. “These are smart, dedicated, hard-working people and she often questions their intelligence.”

Sarah Sanders bails out of Fox interview after being brutally mocked for being bad at her job

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders cancelled a scheduled interview on Fox News after twenty minutes of intense online mockery.

Fox News had hyped on Twitter that Sanders would make an appearance with The Daily Briefing host Dana Perino, who had served as press secretary during the George W. Bush administration.

The network then deleted their tweet hyping the appearance after a brief period of intense backlash.

Perino tweeted that Sanders had “been pulled into a meeting” and would be unavailable.

Between the announcement and the announcement of the cancellation, many people mocked Sanders for not holding a press briefing and instead going on Fox News.

The owner of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, who asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave, has resigned from a local business group.

Stephanie Wilkinson stepped down Tuesday as the director of Main Street Lexington, which works to improve the city’s downtown, WSLS-TV in Roanoke, Virginia, reported.

“Considering the events of the past weekend, Stephanie felt it best that for the continued success of Main Street Lexington, she should step aside,” Elizabeth Branner, president of the Main Street Lexington Board of Directors, said in a statement.

Tuesday afternoon, Trump supporters and advocates protested outside of the Red Hen asking for tolerance and civility.

The restaurant is not scheduled to open until July 5.
