Special counsel's Russia probe loses top FBI investigator

One of the FBI's top investigators, tapped by special counsel Robert Mueller just weeks ago to help lead the probe of Russian meddling in last year's presidential election, has left Mueller's team, sources tell ABC News.

The recent departure of the FBI veteran, Peter Strzok, is the first known hitch in a secretive probe that, by all public accounts, is charging full steam ahead. Just last week, news surfaced that Mueller's team had executed a search warrant at the Virginia home of Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort. And the week before that, ABC News confirmed that Mueller is now using a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., to collect documents and other evidence.

It's unclear why Strzok stepped away from Mueller's team of nearly two dozen lawyers, investigators and administrative staffers. Strzok, who has spent much of his law enforcement career working counterintelligence cases and has been unanimously praised by government officials who spoke with ABC News, is now working for the FBI's human resources division.

He is no stranger to complex and controversial investigations.

As chief of the FBI's counterespionage section last year, he helped oversee the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was the secretary of state, and he took part in the bureau's interview of her.

Within weeks of the end of the Clinton probe, Strzok found his office facing a new challenge: investigating Russia's alleged efforts to influence last year's presidential election, including hacking of Democratic National Committee computers.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.

Then lets see what they've got. No reason to keep it secret. Nothing else about the Trump/Russian thingy has been secret. Hell, even unfacts have been released by "sources familiar with the issue" with breathless excitement.

So lets see it. Lets see what these investigations have uncovered. Lets see if they followed the facts, and if they investigated the Podesta/Schultz/Clinton skullduggery that went on at the same time. It's all intertwined, no way to investigate Russian conspiracies without investigating the rest.

 

You really think they were working with Trump to get him elected? If they committed crimes, I'm quite certain they were not in connection with anything Trump or his campaign did.

Well they should be careful what they wish for because Simpson testified for 10 hours yesterday and handed over 40,000 pages of documents.

And Republican Senator Chuck Grassley was in a town hall meeting in Iowa just a little while ago and was asked if the Judiciary Committee would be releasing a transcript of Simpson's testimony. And Grassley said they would take a vote on it but Simpson and his attorney would have to review the transcripts before they could take a vote. And Simpson's attorney was on TV within minutes of Grassley's statement publicly saying by all means release the transcript.

And let's remember some of the more important things in that dossier.

The report alleged that the Russian government had cultivated Trump for years:

The "Russian regime has been cultivating, supporting and assisting TRUMP for at least 5 years. Aim, endorsed by PUTIN, has been to encourage splits and divisions in western alliance". It maintained that Trump "and his inner circle have accepted a regular flow of intelligence from the Kremlin, including on his Democratic and other political rivals". It claimed that Russian intelligence had "compromised" Trump during his visits to Moscow and could "blackmail him".


The report further alleged that there were multiple in-person meetings between Russian government officials and individuals established as working for Trump.[9][10] The former intelligence officer continued to share information with the FBI, and said in October 2016 that "there was or is a pretty substantial inquiry going on".

 

Nothing like shrill exaggeration! One lawyer leaving is in no way "the investigation falling apart"!

 

And actually the opposite is true. There are at least two other stories breaking now about how Trump has been freaking out on GOP members of congress about the Russian investigations including reports about Trump screaming at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for not protecting him from the Russian investigation.

But what Rachel Maddow found really interesting tonight is just how many Republicans are now willing to talk to the press often through their staff, about Trump, the Russian investigation, and his reactions to it.

And as another pundit pointed out these stories also look like a guilty man trying to run away when no one is chasing him.

The fact that Donald during his campaign could get caught on tape in that motorhome saying that he could even walk up and grab a woman's pussy or something to that effect as well as the other things he said and and did that I would surely think would have derailed his presidential campaign train and fatally destroy any chance that he could ever be elected, but won . And that he got the train back on the tracks and even beat all the others to the presidential train station and won the race and became president speaks volumes. I believe that like a river or a creek if it stops flowing it becomes stagnant, and I think that the whole political river became still and stagnant and that people wanted a change so bad that Trump was a perfect person to make that change happen because of the way he did and said so many things that made people think about what the fuck is happening here this guy cannot self destruct no matter how hard he tries. Anyway I think he has took the stagnant political river flow again and people are stimulated again about politics and that he still to this day doing his best to self destruct and it has the snowball effect getting bigger and bigger and I will be surprised if he even get's thrown out then. I love him for that because I was never interested in politics until I happened to sit and watch it when papi asked me and after a few minutes I was mesmerized by it so much that I couldn't stop watching. There are two things worth noting about this. One is Felix Sater is the guy that has ties to Russian organized crime and also the one who told his family that both he and Trump are probably going to prison. And the other is all the times Trump is on record saying he had nothing to do with Russia. Doesn't have any business with Russia. And hasn't talked to anyone from Russia in about 10 years.
