IRS now sharing information with special counsel Mueller: report

The Internal Revenue Service is sharing information with special counsel Robert Mueller about top Donald Trump aides, following a months-long battle between the two entities over what information the IRS is able to share, CNN reports.

Mueller is investigating as far back as 11 years into former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s financial dealings, which as CNN notes appears to be covered by the special counsel’s directive to look into “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,” as well as “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”

According to CNN, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division has been working in conjunction with the FBI since before the election to review possible financial crimes committed by Manafort.

A former Justice Department official told CNN the IRS is likely sharing “anything tax return-related,” but would require a special subpoena to share tax returns.

Mueller probing three donors with ties to Russia who contributed $2 million to funds controlled by Trumps

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the timing of nearly $2 million in contributions to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign by three American donors with “significant Russian business connections,” ABC News reports.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told ABC News the contributions could be of interest to investigators—even if they were not directed by a foreigner (which would make those donations illegal).

“Obviously, if there were those that had associations with the Kremlin that were contributing, that would be of keen concern,” Schiff said.

As ABC notes, the Center for Responsive Politics revealed two large donors to Trump’s campaign were born in the former Soviet Union, and a third “heads the subsidiary of a large Russian private equity firm.” The three persons of interest reportedly began donating to the Republican National Committee just as Trump became the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. *They also donated a total of $1.25 million to Trump’s inaugural fund.

One of those donors, Andrew Intrater—who donated $285k to Trump’s Inauguration fund—is the head of Columbus Nova, a subsidiary of of Renova Group, the massive conglomerate owned by Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, who frequently meets with Russian president Vladimir Putin. The other two men reportedly being probed by Mueller, Ukrainian-born billionaire Leonard Blavatnik and Russian-born oil executive Simon Kukes, also have ties to Vekeselberg.

Schiff told ABC News following the money from Trump’s donors to people with ties to Russia could be key to Mueller’s investigation.

“The oligarchs are really part and parcel of service to the Kremlin,” Schiff said. “They can be called upon at basically Putin’s will to do what he needs done. It gives them some distance from the Kremlin, it gives them some plausible deniability.”

The news comes as Mueller will reportedly begin interviewing White House staffers this week. The special counsel is investigating Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election and possible conclusion with the Trump campaign. He is also reportedly looking at potential financial crimes committed by current or former Trump aides, as well as whether Trump committed obstruction of justice with his firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

Barack Obama's presidential campaign has been fined $375,000 by the Federal Election Commission for violating federal disclosure laws, Politico reports.

An FEC audit of Obama for America's 2008 records found the committee failed to disclose millions of dollars in contributions and dragged its feet in refunding millions more in excess contributions.

The resulting fine, one of the largest ever handed down by the FEC, is the result of a failure to disclose or improperly disclosing thousands of contributions to Obama for America during the then-senator's 2008 presidential run, documents show.

The FEC says the Obama campaign failed to disclose the sources of 1,300 large donations, which together accounted for nearly $1.9 million. Election Commission rules state campaigns must report donations of $1,000 or more within 20 days of Election Day.

Obama for America was also fined for "untimely resolution of excessive contributions," according to the conciliation agreement, FEC says. The campaign accepted more than $1.3 million in contributions that came from donors who had already given $46,000—the maximum allowed by FEC rules. The campaign eventually refunded the excess cash but did not do so within the 60-day window allotted for resolving such cases, FEC said.

In addition to failing to report big donors and excess donations in a timely manner, the Obama campaign incorrectly dated the filings dealing with $85 million in funds, the FEC claims. This error appears to have been primarily the result of one transfer to the campaign committee from the Obama Victory Fund, a fundraising group that includes money raised by the Democratic National Committee that is earmarked for the presidential race.

Russian-funded political ads on Facebook allegedly promoted Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, President Donald Trump, and Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, according to a new report from Politico. Federal officials now suspect that such ads—some of which criticized Hillary Clinton—were meant to affect the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. Unnamed sources cited by the news outlet even claim that such ads backed Sanders long after his campaign ended and Clinton had won the Democratic primary. There is no indication that any of the candidates were aware of the Russian-funded ads.

And actually Mueller is doing his job. OMG he and his investigators are pulling on every possible string. And another thing that is developing is Mueller is roping in almost everyone who is working in the White House or ever did. Which is forcing all of them to hire attorneys they can't really afford. And they are having to pay for their attorneys themselves while Trump and Don Jr's legal bills are being paid for by wealthy donors. How do you think that is going to go over with the staffers? Could that create a little resentment? Could it result in White Staffers and people on Trump's campaign cutting deals with Mueller to cut their loses and spill their guts? I would think so.

Russians impersonated real US Muslim group to buy targeted Facebook ads and share inflammatory memes

A Facebook group for “United Muslims of America”—a real California-based nonprofit organization that’s not currently “functional,” according to its most recent president—was a fake account tied to the Russian government, the Daily Beast reports.

According to the Beast, the account was used as “a front” to connect with Muslim Americans and their supporters, and peddled fake, inflammatory memes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, including allegations that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “created ISIS” and and “American tax dollars (are) funding Terrorists and trying to destabilize Syria.” The group also used Facebook ads to target individual voters.

According to the Beast, Facebook deactivated the group last month.

“Russia knows no ends and no limits to which groups they would masquerade as to carry out their objectives,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who sits on the House intelligence committee, told the Beast.

Swalwell, who’s attended events hosted by the real United Muslims of America in the past, said these posts are not emblematic of the group he knows.

“The group who I spoke to and continue to engage with, they seek harmony between the U.S. and the Muslim world,” Swalwell said. “Many of these individuals I have heard first-hand denounce terrorist attacks across the world, including those carried out by Muslim. To see their name hijacked by the Russians, if true, and carrying out Russian goals of undermining the U.S. is disturbing and not who they are.”

This report comes as Congress ramps up scrutiny of the social media site, which intelligence officials believe was used by Facebook in order to influence the 2016 presidential election. Facebook received an invitation to speak before the Senate intelligence committee on Nov. 1. Twitter and Google have also been asked to testify.

Kushner’s lawyer accidentally forwards letter revealing he failed to disclose private email account to Senate

Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top advisor Jared Kushner failed to disclose a personal email account he used to conduct government business when he spoke with the Senate intelligence committee in July, according to an email inadvertently forwarded by Kushner’s lawyer and subsequently shared with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

As Tapper reports, committee chairman Sen Richard Burr (R-NC) and vice chairman Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) first learned about Kushner’s email set-up from media reports, after Politico on Monday revealed the Trump adviser created a private email address in December—during the tail-end of the transition—to correspond with other Trump aides. Kushner reportedly created that account in tandem with his official White House email account.

A lawyer for Kushner confirmed the account’s existence to CNN. “Mr. Kushner uses his White House email address to conduct White House business,” Abbe Lowell said in a statement Monday. “Fewer than a hundred emails from January through August were either sent to or returned by Mr. Kushner to colleagues in the White House from his personal email account.”

*On Thursday, Burr and Warner wrote to Kushner about the email revelations, demanding he turn over all relevant documents pertaining to the Russian inquiry, and emphasizing Kushner should submit “all email accounts, messaging apps, or similar communication channels” related to their request.

As Tapper reports, CNN first learned of Burr and Warner’s letter to Kushner via the self-described “email prankster” who’s managed to trick multiple Trump officials into embarrassing and potentially dangerous correspondences over the past several months. Thursday, Lowell apparently tried to forward the Senate intelligence committee’s letter, when he inadvertently sent it to the email prankster.

In a statement to CNN, Lowell tried to downplay Burr and Warner’s request.

“It is perfectly normal that the committees would want to make sure that they received all pertinent records,” he said. “We did review this account at the time and there were no responsive or relevant documents there. The committee was so informed when documents were produced and there is no issue here.”

Now I have been watching this battle between the Republicans in congress and Robert Mueller for a little while now and it looks to me like the only reason the FBI and DOJ are refusing to hand over what they have on the Trump/Russian dossier is it is a really hot part of Mueller's investigation and they are not about to hand it over to congress because they know they cannot trust them with what they know.

Justice Department, FBI resist lawmaker demands for ‘Trump dossier’ files: officials

The U.S. Justice Department and the FBI are resisting demands from a Republican lawmaker to hand over documents about a former British spy’s dossier on purported Russian support for Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign, because the FBI has its own open criminal investigation, officials said.

The U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee issued subpoenas in August seeking “any and all documents” about both agencies’ dealings with former MI6 officer Christopher Steele, according to a letter seen by Reuters from committee chairman Devin Nunes, a Trump supporter.

Steele compiled the so-called Trump dossier, which Trump was told by FBI director James Comey contained salacious material about the businessman-turned president. Trump and his associates have said the dossier’s contents were false.

Law enforcement and congressional officials said that the Justice Department and the FBI were reluctant to comply with the demand for documents as the FBI had its own probe, under the supervision of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, into U.S. allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign to tilt the November election in Trump’s favor.

Moscow has repeatedly denied meddling and Trump has denied any collusion between his campaign and Russian officials.

Two officials said Nunes met with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein behind closed doors on Thursday to discuss the subpoenas.

“The Deputy Attorney General is meeting with Nunes as part of an ongoing negotiation over what information DOJ will provide or how it will be provided,” a Justice Department official said.

The FBI declined to comment on anything to do with Nunes’ request. A spokesman for Nunes declined to comment.

According to a Sept. 1 letter Nunes sent to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the subpoenas demand that the department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation produce all documents related to their “relationship” with Steele and the “so-called ‘Trump Dossier”.

Such documents, the letter said, would include any payments the FBI made to Steele, and any efforts the government made to corroborate the contents of Steele’s reports.

Sessions recused himself earlier this year from the Russia investigation. Nunes publicly recused himself from leading the Russia probe in April following a secret visit he paid to White House officials.

Democrats on the committee said Republicans issued the subpoenas in an attempt to discredit Steele. Republicans say it is important to understand the genesis of the dossier and whether it was created to sabotage Trump during his successful campaign for president.

Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee has also been battling with the Justice Department for months over its request to interview two FBI officials about Trump’s dismissal in May of Comey as FBI chief, according to letters from the committee and the department.

The department twice refused to allow them to testify, according to the letters. On Sept. 22, it agreed that it would be “appropriate” for the officials to testify provided that it would be in a classified setting and did not interfere with Mueller’s inquiry.

The Senate panel’s chairman, Charles Grassley, had told reporters on Sept. 20 that the committee had begun drafting subpoenas to compel the testimony. In another letter dated Sept. 27, the conditions of the testimony still appeared to be in dispute.

Fake News on Twitter Flooded Swing States That Helped Trump Win
A new study reveals how junk content—including from Russia—hit Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, and beyond.'

Millions of tweets were flying furiously in the final days leading up to the 2016 US presidential election. And in closely fought battleground states that would prove key to Donald Trump’s victory, they were more likely than elsewhere in America to be spreading links to fake news and hyperpoliticized content from Russian sources and WikiLeaks, according to new research published Thursday by Oxford University.

Nationwide during this period, one polarizing story was typically shared on average for every one story produced by a professional news organization. However, fake news from Twitter reached higher concentrations than the national average in 27 states, 12 of which were swing states—including Pennsylvania, Florida and Michigan, where Trump won by slim margins.

While it’s unclear what effect such content ultimately had on voters, the new study only deepens concerns about how the 2016 election may have been tweaked by nefarious forces on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media. “Many people use these platforms to find news and information that shapes their political identities and voting behavior,” says Samantha Bradshaw, a lead researcher for Oxford’s Computational Propaganda Project, which has been tracking disinformation strategies around the world since 2014. “If bad actors can lower the quality of information, they are diminishing the quality of democracy.”

Efforts by Vladimir Putin’s regime were among the polarizing content captured in the new Oxford study. “We know the Russians have literally invested in social media,” Bradshaw told Mother Jones, referring to reports of Russian-bought Facebook ads as well as sophisticated training of Russian disinformation workers detailed in another recent study by the team. “Swing states would be the ones you would want to target.”

The dubious Twitter content in the new study also contained polarizing YouTube videos–including some produced by the Kremlin-controlled RT network, which were uploaded without any information identifying them as Russian-produced. All the YouTube videos have since been taken down, according to Bradshaw; it’s unclear whether the accounts were deleted by the users, or if YouTube removed the content.

The Oxford researchers captured 22 million tweets from November 1 to November 11 in 2016, and they have been scrutinizing the dataset to better understand the impact of disinformation on the US election. The team has also analyzed propaganda operations in more than two dozen countries, using a combination of reports from trusted media sources and think tanks, and cross-checking that information with experts on the ground. Their recent research has additional revelations about how disinformation works in the social-media age, including from Moscow.

Putin’s big investment in information warfare
In studying Russia’s propaganda efforts targeting both domestic and international populations, the Oxford researchers found evidence of increasing military expenditures on social-media operations since 2014. They also learned of a sophisticated training system for workers employed by Putin’s disinformation apparatus: “They have invested millions of dollars into training staff and setting targets for them,” Bradshaw says. She described a working environment where English training is provided to improve messaging for Western audiences: Supervisors hand out topical talking points to include in coordinated messaging, workers’ content is edited, and output is audited, with rewards given to more productive workers.

The battle to identify bots
One telltale sign of bots stems from a group of accounts that tweet much more frequently than typical humans—or accounts that tweet on exact intervals, say, every five minutes. The bot-driven accounts may lack typical profile elements such as profile pictures (see also: the generic Twitter egg) and often don’t engage in replies with other social-media accounts. In addition to spreading fake news, “they can also amplify marginal voices and ideas by inflating the number of likes, shares and retweets they receive, creating an artificial sense of popularity, momentum or relevance,” the Oxford team reported recently.

While it’s difficult for researchers to untangle how many Twitter bots are Russian-controlled, they regularly see Russian accounts in the mix: For example, on Twitter, they found accounts following Trump that tweeted most frequently during Russian business hours and switched regularly between English and Cyrillic.

On Facebook, it’s much more challenging to sort out which content is bot-driven, says Bradshaw. That’s in part because on Facebook, bots typically operate pages or groups, which can be even more opaque than individual accounts.

The presence of bots during the election homestretch
The Oxford researchers also found that bots infiltrated the core conversations among their Twitter data during the election period—and several of their analyses revealed that bots supported Trump much more than Hillary Clinton. A separate research effort by Emilio Ferrara at the University of Southern California, cited in Oxford’s report, determined that about one-fifth of campaign-related tweets during the month before the election likely were generated by bots. Ferrara’s team recorded 4 million tweets during that time period posted by about 400,000 bots.

How Germany fought off the fake-news scourge
In the days before the September 24 parliamentary election, the Oxford researchers found that political bots were minimally active on Twitter in Germany. The most tweets tracked were in support of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, which won 13 percent of the vote and became the first far-right party to earn a presence in Parliament in 60-plus years. The research also found that Germans were much less likely to share fake news stories than their American counterparts, sharing links from professional news organizations four times as often as links from sites pushing fake news. Researchers theorize that voters in Germany and other parts of Europe may have been inoculated to the effects of bot-driven fake news, thanks to the ongoing fallout from 2016. “I would speculate the Russians overplayed their hand in the US elections,” Bradshaw says. “Voters in the US weren’t really prepared, but that was part of the discourse in other countries like Germany.”

But the battle is only beginning. In the hands of bad operators “the bots get a bit smarter,” Bradshaw says. When those controlling them realize that the bots are being tracked, for example, they may adjust the frequency that they tweet in order to fly below researchers’ radar. Bradshaw also notes that voice-simulation technology combined with video-simulation technology is making it increasingly possible to create fake news—say, a video showing politicians making statements that they never actually said. “In innovations in technology,” she cautions, “the attackers always have the advantage.”

Trump Organization turns over documents revealing unreported contacts with Russia in 2016: report

Federal investigators received documents about two previously-unreported contacts between the Trump Organization and Russia, sources close to the matter told the Washington Post on Monday.

One instance took place weeks before the Republican National Convention, and saw President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen exchange emails with a “business associate” about attending an economic conference in Russia that would be attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Another involving Cohen took place in late 2015, when he fielded a proposal from a Russian billionaire who used to sit on the country’s Senate for a Moscow residential building. The latter was “the second proposal for a Trump-branded Moscow project that was delivered to the company during the presidential campaign and has since come to light,” the Post noted.

Cohen became a target in the investigation into potential collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign after his name appeared in the 35-page “golden showers” dossier written by former British spy Christopher Steele.

Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer at the center of Donald Trump Jr.’s clandestine meeting at Trump Tower in 2016, claims she met with Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA)—nicknamed “Putin’s Favorite Congressman”—in April 2016 to discuss the Maginsky Act, Foreign Policy reports.

Veselnitskaya said she spoke with Rohrabacher in Moscow to discuss the Maginsky Act, a 2012 bipartisan bill which prohibited 18 Russian officials from using the U.S. banking system. It was implemented in retaliation for the death of Russian tax accountant Sergei Magnitsky, who died in a Moscow prison in 2009. In response to the Maginsky Act, the Kremlin barred Americans from adopting Russian children.

Veselnitskaya is the same lawyer who met with Trump Jr. after promising incriminating information on Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign. In a statement issued immediately after that meeting came to light—and “personally dictated” by Donald Trump—Trump Jr. insisted attendees (including top White House adviser Jared Kushner and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort) “primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government.”

It was later revealed the meeting was initiated after Trump Jr. was told Veselnitskaya would proved dirt on Clinton. Trump Jr. was ultimately forced to correct his initial misleading statement three times.

The Senate Intelligence Committee agrees that Russia attempted to interfere with the presidential election, but it hasn’t concluded its investigation of possible collusion by the Trump campaign.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), the committee chairman, and Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), the committee’s ranking Democrat, gave a status report Wednesday on the eight-month-long investigation.

The panel has expanded its probe and refused to rule out possible conclusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, and the chairmen warned the Kremlin had not stopped its efforts to influence elections.

“Russian active measure efforts did not end on Election Day 2016, and were not only geared at the United States of America,” Warner said, listing possible interference in France, the Netherlands and Germany. “We need to be on guard.”

The senators found evidence that Russia had hacked into political parties digital infrastructure and at least tried to test the vulnerabilities of electoral systems in 21 states, and they’re concerned that state and federal officials aren’t doing enough to prevent future attacks.

“We still believe there needs to be a more aggressive, whole of government approach,” Warner said.

The investigation also found that Russian agents manipulated social media through paid ads and false accounts used to drive interest in active measures intended to sow chaos and division.

“The Russian intelligence service is determined (and) clever, and I recommend every campaign and every election official take action,” Burr said.

The lawmakers said they would not release social media ads paid for by Russian agents to influence U.S. voters, but they hoped Facebook and Twitter would.

“I believe it is important for the public to see (these ads),” Warner said.
