Rod Rosenstein believes Mueller Russia investigation is 'appropriate and independent': WSJ

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein characterized the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections as "appropriate and independent" in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

His comments distance him from President Donald Trump, who has frequently derided the investigation led by Robert Mueller as a baseless "witch hunt."

Rosenstein also reaffirmed his commitment to his job amid reports that he planned to resign last month.

"People are entitled to be frustrated, I can accept that," Rosenstein said in the interview. "But at the end of the day, the public will have confidence that the cases we brought were warranted by the evidence and that it was an appropriate use of resources."

Rumors swirled last month that Rosenstein was preparing to resign after The New York Times reported that he had secretly recorded Trump and questioned his fitness for office. But Trump said last week that he has no plans to fire Rosenstein, who denies the allegations by the Times.

"The president knows that I am prepared to do this job as long as he wants me to do this job," he said.

Mueller May Have Evidence GOP Operative Who Took His Own Life Had ‘Foreknowledge’ of Hacks

Special counsel Robert Mueller continues to examine the 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee and whether various individuals had knowledge of it before documents were dumped on WikiLeaks. These individuals include Jerome Corsi (who we have covered before), former Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone and the associates of the deceased Peter W. Smith.

According to Byron Tau of the Wall Street Journal, “Mueller has Stone’s telephone records and evidence Smith had foreknowledge of hacks” by the fictitious persona known as Guccifer 2.0.

The Mueller Probe has concluded Guccifer 2.0 was actually a group Russian military intelligence officers.

Smith died last year at 81, and police have not found evidence to suggest that it was anything other than a suicide. The Chicago Tribune reported that it seemed Smith had “a lot on his mind” the day he died.

It’s been reported for some time that Stone, Corsi and Randy Credico‘s contact with WikiLeaks was under investigation.

Although Mueller’s office did not comment, one person “familiar with the matter” said that Smith’s associates were being questioned and that investigators “have evidence” Smith “may have had advance knowledge of details about the release of emails from a top Hillary Clinton campaign official by WikiLeaks.”

Smith reportedly raised $100,000 in a search for damning Clinton emails.

It’s not clear at this time how connected this is to Roger Stone and WikiLeaks, but WSJ reported that the “person familiar with Mr. Smith recalled him repeatedly implying that he knew ahead of time about leaks of Mr. Podesta’s emails”:

It isn’t clear to what degree, if any, Mr. Stone’s and Mr. Smith’s efforts were connected. Messrs. Smith and Stone had mutual associates in Mr. Corsi as well as former Wall Street financier Charles Ortel, who was researching the Clinton Family Foundation, emails and public comments show. Mr. Stone said he wasn’t aware of Mr. Smith’s work. Mr. Ortel said he wasn’t aware of a relationship between Mr. Stone and Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith referred to his project as the “Clinton Email Reconnaissance Initiative.” He compiled a long list of businessmen, activists, lawyers, researchers and Trump campaign officials who he wanted to work with to obtain Mrs. Clinton’s 33,000 emails. While many people on that list say they never gave Mr. Smith permission to use their names, some were copied or named in emails circulated by Mr. Smith in 2016. Others got unsolicited approaches from Mr. Smith they say they never responded to.

Stone, for his part, maintains that he did nothing wrong but wouldn’t be surprised if Mueller tried to charge him with some crime.

Russian national charged with attempting to interfere in 2018 midterms

(CNN)A Russian who allegedly worked on funding online propaganda efforts to manipulate voters in the 2016 and 2018 elections was charged with a federal crime Friday as part of a wider conspiracy to hurt American democracy.

Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova, 44, of St. Petersburg, Russia, is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States for managing the financing of the social media troll operation that included the Internet Research Agency, which special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators charged with crimes earlier this year.

Prosecutors who unsealed the complaint Friday say she aided the Russian effort to *"inflame passions" online related to immigration, gun control and the Second Amendment, the Confederate flag, race relations, LGBT issues, the Women's March and the NFL National Anthem debate from December 2016 until May 2018.

The social media efforts specifically focused on the shootings of church members in Charleston, South Carolina, and concert attendees in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Charlottesville "Unite the Right" rally, which left one counterprotester dead, and police shootings of African-American men, the complaint says.
The criminal charge says the Russians' online manipulation effort focused on multiple political viewpoints and candidates, but frequently zeroed in on the Republican Party's most well-known leaders.

In one effort to spread an online news article about the late Sen. John McCain's position on a border wall to stop illegal immigration, an alleged conspirator directed others to "brand McCain as an old geezer." They also attempted to paint House Speaker Paul Ryan as "a complete and absolute nobody incapable of any decisiveness" and as a "two-faced loudmouth."

They aimed other efforts at stories about Jeb Bush, Sen. Marco Rubio and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, pushed to "fully support" Donald Trump, and called Mueller "a puppet of the establishment," according to the complaint.

$35 million budget
The effort had an operating budget of $35 million, prosecutors say, and was allegedly funded by Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin and his companies. Prigozhin has not responded to a criminal charge he faces from Mueller for funding the scheme before the 2016 election.

"The conspiracy has a strategic goal, which continues to this day, to sow division and discord in the US political system, including by creating social and political polarization, undermining faith in democratic institutions, and influencing US elections, including the upcoming 2018 midterm election," the criminal complaint in the Eastern District of Virginia said Friday.

The online scheme directed its proponents to "effectively aggravate the conflict between minorities and the rest of the population," prosecutors quoted one member of the effort saying.

Khusyaynova also worked with Concord Management and Catering, another defendant in the Mueller probe, to take in funds. Concord is represented by lawyers in the US and is the only Russian defendant to plead not guilty so far.

Khusyaynova had not been previously charged with a crime.

Federal authorities issued a warrant for her arrest on September 28. But it had been kept secret for the three weeks since then so it would not derail "other government efforts to disrupt foreign influence efforts," a court filing released Friday said. Prosecutors did not elaborate.

Prosecutors say Khusyaynova oversaw the financing, budgeting and expense payments of the corporatized propaganda effort, called "Project Lakhta." The money came in from Concord, which received some of its funding from the Russian government to feed school children and the military, prosecutors allege.

The millions of dollars allowed the Russians to buy social media analytic services, secure server space and domain names, and plant online advertisements and to stage political rallies and protests in the US. Sometimes, the Russians would use fake Americanized names like "Bertha Malone" or "Helen Christopherson" on Facebook, or handles like "@TrumpWithUSA" "@swampdrainer659" or "@UsaUsafortrump" on Twitter. One Twitter account the group ran, @wokeluisa, amassed 55,000 followers in one year, tweeting about Flint, Michigan's drinking water crisis and encouraging voters to register in the 2018 midterm elections.

Project Lakhta's monthly budget frequently approached $2 million in the last three years.

Latest Russian charged in Mueller probe
The new case marks the 27th time a Russian has been charged with a crime related to 2016 election interference or by Mueller, whose mandate is to investigate those crimes.

In another open case, the Justice Department indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers for hacking the Democratic Party and the Hillary Clinton campaign and spreading those documents online to influence the election. A 26th Russian national was indicted in June alongside now-convicted former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort for alleged witness tampering.

Typically, criminal cases against Russian nationals hang in the court system with no progress after the initial charge, because the European nation does not extradite its citizens to the US when they are charged. The cases in effect allow the US to "name and shame" defendants, as court-watchers call the practice. The defendants are unlikely to ever appear in US court.

Russian company Concord Management and Catering's not guilty plea in the election propaganda case was an unusual pushback on these types of indictments. Concord's US-based attorneys are fighting the conspiracy charge and have so far unsuccessfully attempted to use the court to challenge Mueller's work and to gather information about the investigators' tactics.

But that's not what the intial reason for the investigation was....was it fool?

The intial reason was Trump/Russia/Putin election collusion, so still no evidence that Trump was involved.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is closely investigating whether Trump-ally Roger Stone was communicating with WikiLeaks and had advance knowledge of the group's plans to release hacked Democratic emails in 2016, the Washington Post reports. The newspaper says Mueller's office has been “aggressively pursuing leads behind the scenes” of late about whether Stone was communicating with Julian Assange's group. The group's leak of emails believed to have been hacked by Russian operatives served as a major disruption in the 2016 presidential campaign. Stone boasted during the election campaign that he was in touch with Assange, but has since backtracked and said his past comments were exaggerated or misunderstood. Roger Stone re-thinks his rhetoric as Mueller aggressively pursues his ties to WikiLeaks

One of the members of President Donald Trump’s inner campaign circle who has thus far avoided criminal charges is Roger Stone, a longtime Republican operative going back to the Nixon years who worked on getting Trump elected in 2016.

But that does not mean he isn’t a focus of special counsel Robert Mueller’s attention. Indeed, per the Washington Post, Mueller’s team has aggressively pursued Stone’s possible ties to WikiLeaks, and his seeming advance knowledge of Democratic information stolen by Russian hackers and funneled through the site.

Stone recently boasted that even if Mueller indicts him, he will not reveal the dirt he has on the president. *“I will never roll on Donald Trump,” he said in a speech to the Florida-based Trump Club 45.

But according to the Post, Stone is now apparently backpedaling from this language — as it only now seems to have occurred to him that to “never roll” on the president would imply he in fact had damaging info on the president he could betray in the first place.

“The special counsel pokes into every aspect of my social, family, personal, business and political life, seeking something — anything — he can use to pressure me, to silence me and to try to induce me to testify against my friend Donald Trump,” said Stone said in a video asking for contributions. “This I will not do. When I say I won’t roll on the president, what I mean is I will not be forced to make up lies to bring him down.”

This walkback is one of many times Stone has changed his story. Stone originally claimed to have a “backchannel” with WikiLeaks through New York comedian Randy Credico, something he now claims was just an exaggeration. He very clearly seemed to have advance knowledge of WikiLeaks’ dump of the Podesta emails, writing on Twitter in August 2016 that it would soon be Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman’s “time in the barrel,” but now claims that his contacts with WikiLeaks and Guccifer 2.0 — a hacker now linked to the Russian military — were inconsequential.

The special counsel is reportedly now looking into whether Stone used other middlemen to coordinate with WikiLeaks, including far-right conspiracy theorist and Birther Jerome Corsi. WikiLeaks, for their part, deny having any contact with Stone — but a grand jury in D.C. is still weighing how to proceed in the matter.

Mueller Reportedly Has Recordings of Roger Stone in His Possession

Special counsel Robert Mueller, as Law&Crime reported Friday, has been turning up the heat on former Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone. Now CNN is reporting that Mueller has recordings of Stone in his possession.

We already knew that former Stone aides Andrew Miller and Kristin Davis have been in the sights of the Mueller Probe; the same is true of conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi and Stone acquaintance Randy Credico. Despite Credico’s incredulity about his plight, he has seemingly been a central figure when it comes to unraveling Stone’s contact with WikiLeaks ahead of the 2016 hack of the DNC and the pursuit of dirt on then-candidate Hillary Clinton.

Credico, you may recall, is the guy Stone reportedly asked to contact WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

According to CNN, however, Mueller’s examination of all things Stone seeks to uncover “whether Stone had backchannels to WikiLeaks during the 2016 election” that go beyond the Credico connection.

To that end, the special counsel has reportedly obtained recordings in which Stone said he “talked to Trump regularly” early on in the campaign. In another piece of evidence, Stone allegedly expressed that he should “receive credit for coordinating” with WikiLeaks. Per CNN:

Additionally, investigators are looking into whether Stone shared information that he believed was from WikiLeaks with members of Trump’s presidential campaign, according to a source familiar with the probe. Investigators have been provided recordings of Stone claiming he talked to Trump regularly early in the 2016 presidential campaign, CNN has learned. Later, after various document dumps from WikiLeaks, Stone claimed in separate communications he should receive credit for coordinating with the group, the source said.

Stone attorney Grant Smith responded to the report, saying that, at this point, the news about his client is like a broken record.

“We have said over and over again that he shared nothing with the campaign because he had nothing to share,” he said. “He received nothing from anybody. At what point does this old record get worn out from being played over and over again?”

Stone himself said that he “never discussed WikiLeaks stuff with Trump” and “would never have said I should get credit for coordinating with WikiLeaks since I did no such thing.”

In the past, Stone has said he believes the special counsel is out to “frame him.”

“I have testified truthfully before the House Intelligence Committee that Randy Credico was the source who confirmed Assange’s June 2016 CNN interview in which the Wikileaks publisher said he had substantial information on Hillary Clinton,” Stone said. “As I testified Credico told me this material would be released in October. I now realize that Credico’s source was a Wikileaks lawyer and not Assange himself. At no time did Credico tell me what the source, content or scope of the WikiLeaks disclosures would be.”

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 Donald Trump campaign conspiring with Russians to win the White House appears to be zeroing in on longtime GOP dirty trickster Roger Stone and Donald Trump, Jr.

“So this was a campaign whose public defense on all these questions of collusion, of conspiracy with the Russians, has been ‘we were too incompetent to collude with our press office,’ yet — yet we are to believe that Donald Trump coincidentally foreshadowed a big event on the day the emails came out?” MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace asked. “It defies any sort of logic or any sort of natural rhythm about the Trump candidacy.”

Wallace noted that, “this also ensnares and involves potentially Don, Jr. and we have some of the most explicit and easy to understand articulations of the campaign’s eagerness to be in receipt of assistance from Russia, as well as the first inkling into the vastness of what they were offering.”

“So we’re not groping in the dark in terms of trying to understand the Trump campaign’s affinity for, their appetite for, and their willingness to receive assistance from Russians and their associates,” Wallace explained.

“We have all of these proof points of coordination. Mueller has charged 13 Russians with election meddling,” the host continued. “Doesn’t he simply have to connect one more dot to one person on the Trump campaign and we have a conspiracy?”

“Look, there is certainly a huge amount of evidence of cooperation and discussions — almost like too much evidence,” noted New York Times reporter Nick Confessore. “It’s not like it’s in question anymore.”

Ecuador May Have Just Blown Robert Mueller’s Russia Probe Wide Open

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange may be sent to the United States, courtesy of Ecuador, according to Reuters. The South American country has been letting Assange stay at their embassy in London for years, but he reportedly said on Monday that they’re going to extradite him.

This could mean several things for Assange, who is known for releasing sensitive material through WikiLeaks. The U.S. Department of Justice has reportedly considered charging him for releasing stolen classified information. One thing working in Assange’s favor is that he possesses crucial information regarding Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and hacked emails that WikiLeaks published. If anyone connected to President Donald Trump or his campaign was involved in the hacking or publishing, Assange would know it, and he would know who it was. Trump associate Roger Stone had reportedly claimed to have been in touch with Assange, but he later denied that this actually happened.

If Assange does find himself in the hands of American authorities, Special Counsel Robert Mueller could try to work out a deal whereby Assange gives Mueller information in exchange for leniency for his role in leaks of classified information.

As CNN legal analyst and attorney Ross Garber noted, Assange could also provide evidence regarding specific Russian individuals he may have dealt with as well.

The leaked Democratic emails were only some of the materials WikiLeaks has published over the years. Assange drew notoriety for releasing military documents leaked by Chelsea Manning.

The Senate Intel Committee has also said they want to interview Assange about Russia, and WikiLeaks’ legal team even said they were considering it in August of this year.

This development could theoretically blow the Russia investigation wide open. Alternatively, Assange may decide to press his luck, as the Justice Department said in 2013 that it would be difficult to bring a case against Assange, since he is only known to have published classified materials that other people leaked to him. Charges for such acts would risk running afoul of longstanding legal precedent that allows journalists to publish classified information that is leaked to them. The Trump Administration may feel differently though, and may have a different legal strategy for possibly prosecuting Assange.

Longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone bragged about Wikileaks’ plans to release stolen emails from Democratic Party officials on conference calls during the run-up to the 2016 election, the Wall Street Journal reports.

At least twice during August 2016, the Trump adviser had conference calls where he told callers about WikiLeaks’ plans to release information that he said would affect the 2016 presidential campaign before the election, the paper reports.

The report is sourced to *“people who listened to the sessions and recordings of one of the calls published online and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.”

It’s a matter that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators are looking into, “according to a witness in the probe and another person familiar with the matter.”

“In the background of this entire race going forward is the fact that Julian Assange…is going to continue to drop information on the American voters that is going to roil this race,” Mr. Stone said on Aug. 4, 2016. “He has made that very clear.”
