Shooter dead, two injured after shooting at Great Mills High School in Maryland

A gunman who shot and wounded two students at Great Mills High School in Maryland was killed Tuesday after engaging an armed school resource officer, an official said.

The shooter was the only fatality. A female student was critically injured and a male student was also shot but is in stable condition at a hospital, authorities said.



"Our school resource officer was alerted to the event. he pursued the shooter, engaged the shooter, fired a round at the shooter," St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said. "The shooter fired a round as well. In the hours and days to come, we'll be able to determine if our school resource officer's round struck the shooter."

The resource officer, who wasn't immediately identified, was not injured.

Earlier, the school was placed on lockdown and students were being evacuated to Leonardtown High School to be reunified with their parents.

The incident was contained and police were on the scene, the school said on its website. Maryland State Police also told Fox News they were responding to the incident. The FBI and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are on the scene assisting with the investigation.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted Tuesday his office was “closely monitoring the situation at Great Mills High School.”



“Maryland State Police is in touch with local law enforcement and ready to provide support. Our prayers are with students, school personnel, and first responders,” Hogan wrote.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., was en route to the high school, which is in his district, Fox News learned.

Terrence Rhames, 18, a student at the school, told the Baltimore Sun he was standing with friends before class began when he heard a gunshot. He said he started to run and believed he saw a girl fall nearby.

“I just thank God I’m safe,” Rhames said. “I just want to know who did it and who got injured.

Jake Heibel, the principal of the school, told parents last month that the school had investigated threats of a possible shooting and found they were "not substantiated." Heibel told parents that school officials interviewed two students in February who were overheard mentioning a school shooting and found that they posed no threat. His letter was posted on the local news site The Bay Net.

However, Heibel said the school still increased its security after social media posts about a possible school shooting "circulated quite extensively."

The school is located about 60 miles from Washington, D.C.

The incident comes more than a month after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. That massacre, carried out by a former student, left 17 people dead. The shooting also comes days before some 500,000 people were expected to march Saturday in Washington, D.C. to protest gun violence and push for gun control legislation.

I have not seen any information about either weapon. Officer is said to fire one shot.

There is something wrong with the mentality of today's youth...

Back when I was in school, there were no school shootings anywhere in the country. However there were plenty of guns. But we never brought them to school to kill each other.

What is wrong with these stupid kids???????????????

What matters is it was stopped immediately.

 

Not quite. Two people were shot, so we'll call that an almost immediately. That might matter.

If we average the Parkland shooting and the Maryland shooting, we have 8 dead and 8 wounded, per shooting where an armed law enforcement officer was on the scene. Although the trend is downward, it seems a little early to do a victory dance. We'll have to wait for more shootings to get a real idea of what an acceptable body count is.

 

There isn't an acceptable body count, but you know as well as I know, this could have ended much worse than it did.

What is acceptable...eliminating 'gun free zones'...'fighting fire with fire'...

 

By my count we have 110 kids dead or injured because of guns this year already

 

It's obvious that there is an acceptable body count, as we continue to accept each shooting and do nothing different.

Here we have one dead and two injured, and you're ready to endorse it as the perfect solution. What part of "acceptable" has confused you?

By the way, "Gun free zones" was never intended to keep guns out of schools and no one thought it would. It's a law which allows the government to arrest people who haven't yet committed a crime, or add more to the list of crimes they committed. I'm surprised I have to explain this kind of shit.

Didn't this shooter claim about a month ago that he was going to do it through social media?

Wouldn't that be a fine measure of prevention had law enforcement been intervening prior to the shooting?

You thinking that you need to explain anything to me, is where the real surprise is.

Nothing can be done to stop senseless shootings. I thought everyone understood that. It's just a matter of deciding when too many have been shot, so we can meter out the proper amount of thoughts and prayers.
