Before he was a U.S. Senator, Al Franken was the author of Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, a satirical book that excoriated conservative media.

In 2003, he faced off with one of the subjects of his book, the infamous Bill O’Reilly, during a panel discussion at the author event BookExpo. O’Reilly and Franken both spoke on the panel, beginning with the Fox News host, who promised he doesn’t “call anybody a liar” and doesn’t lie himself—as evidenced by the fact that his show doesn’t retract things.

“If I’m going to be accused of being a liar, you better have something there,” O’Reilly said to Franken before the future senator spoke.

And speak he did. Franken delivered a brutal smackdown of O’Reilly, describing a time the Fox News host claimed he won a Peabody award (an objectively false statement), and, when called out for lying, claimed he’d never said it in the first place.

“Guy says about me a couple weeks ago, ‘O’Reilly said he won a Peabody award,” Franken recalled O’Reilly saying. “Never said it.”

See this is why you don’t retract things, you just continuously lie,” Franken joked. “I could go on all day,” he later quipped.

“I know you could,” O’Reilly cooly replied. “You just about have.”

“We’re supposed to be on here for 15 minutes, this idiot goes on for 35,” O’Reilly continued (Franken spoke for under ten minutes). “All he’s got in six-and-a-half years is that I misspoke, that I labelled a Polk Award a Peabody. He writes it in his book, he tries to make me out to be a liar.”

“No, no, no, no, no,” Franken interjected, before O’Reilly cut him off.

“Hey! Shut up!” O’Reilly shouted. “You had your 35 minutes, shut up!”

“This isn’t your show Bill!” Franken shot back.

“This guys accuses me of being a liar, ladies and gentlemen … because I misspoke and called a Peabody a Polk,” O’Reilly repeated. “This is what this guy does. He demonizes it and then other people pick it up. Now if it’s important to you that I misspoke—“

“He didn’t just misspeak,” Franken said.

I do it because I can and you can disagree with me all you like but will be held accountable to your views. At least I am contributing to exposing these people that spew Trumps rhetoric and I have money to waste on that, which btw worked in this matter and a few others.

I have skeletons in my closet as well and is part of why I never ran for office on a Provincial level here.

On a related note: in a CNN interview Sarah Palin was grilled as to whether or not there was this culture at FOX when she was under contract with them and sidestepped the question as to whether or not this happened to her as well while at FOX ... she did not dismiss the allegation outright.

Fox News payouts linked to sexual harassment accusations to total $85 million with Bill O’Reilly severance

Fox News will have paid out more than $85 million to make multiple sexual harassment allegations go away following news that the cable network’s former top star Bill O’Reilly may get a $25 million severance after he was fired this week.

O’Reilly — who headed the network’s flagship “The O’Reilly Factor” — was fired on Wednesday, April 19 after an internal investigation at the network conducted by a law firm found multiple women had complained about his behavior.

In early April a New York Times investigation showed the network had already paid out $13 million in settlements to five women so they would not pursue harassment cases against the show host for what they described as verbal abuse, lewd comments, unwanted advances and obscene phone calls. Sources told The Times the $25 million payout to O’Reilly would be equivalent to one year of his salary.

In July 2016 former Fox News founding chairman Roger Ailes left the company after allegations emerged that he sexually harassed employees like former star anchor Megyn Kelly. Ailes received $40 million in severance pay.

Aile’s resignation came after former host Gretchen Carlson alleged in a lawsuit on July 6, 2016 that she was fired by Ailes for refusing to have sex with him. Following her suit six other women, including Kelly, came forward with allegations against Ailes.

In the nine months since Ailes’ ouster, Fox News has appointed a new head of human resources and conducted sensitivity training for employees. They have also dismissed some of the executives closest to Ailes.

O’Reilly’s dismissal has had a positive effect on the stock price of Fox News’ parent company 21st Century Fox, which is up 68 cents, or 2.2 percent on the day before . O’Reilly’s show was a television ratings giant, and with one of the largest viewerships in cable news was key for generating advertising revenue for the network.

At least 56 advertisers pulled their ads from “The O’Reilly Factor” since news of the payouts from the network to O’Reilly’s accusers emerged in early April. Although 21st Century Fox’s stock price has risen, it is still down 4 percent since news of the payouts first broke.

The show’s ratings have continued to remain strong averaging 3.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen Research numbers in early April. Those prime-time numbers are up 28 percent during the same period in 2016.

O’Reilly has continued to fight back against the allegations, calling them as “unfounded.” He was unable to appear on television one last time to say goodbye to his viewers.

"It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims," O’Reilly said in a statement Thursday. "But that is the unfortunate reality that many of us in the public eye must live with today. I will always look back on my time at Fox with great pride in the unprecedented success we achieved and with my deepest gratitude to all my dedicated viewers."

An exchange with CNN’s Jake Tapper Thursday revealed that Sarah Palin may have been sexually harassed during her time at Fox News.

“It sounds like you experienced something,” Tapper said after Palin danced around his question about sexual harassment at Fox.

“I just — you know, it was just time to part ways and, and, you know, get — get out there in, I guess, a more diverse arena to express views,” Palin concluded.

CNN then looked through interviews of men who worked at Fox News at the time and did interviews where they were asked about Palin.

During a 2010 interview between Don Imus and Chris Wallace, Imus asked if Palin would be sitting on Wallace’s lap during an upcoming interview.

“One can only hope,” said Wallace laughing.

Former Fox head Roger Ailes explained in 2011 he “hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings.”

Tucker Carlson, who will replace Bill O’Reilly looks to be filling more than just his seat. A 2011 tweet caused an internet backlash when he called out Palin’s polling.

“Palin’s popularity falling in Iowa, but maintains lead to become supreme commander in Milfistan,” Carlson tweeted.

MILF stands for “Mother I’d Like to F*ck.”

He later deleted the tweet.

Palin didn’t need to confirm or deny whether or not she was sexually harassed at Fox News, Google did it for her. While Fox has taken steps to rid themselves of Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly, Chris Wallace still has a show on the network and Tucker Carlson earned a promotion.

Fox News execs forced black women to arm wrestle for ‘amusement and pleasure of white superiors’: lawsuit

Seven black Fox News employees will reportedly join a discrimination lawsuit against the company next week, Gabriel Sherman reported for The New Yorker.

The existing lawsuit filed by two black employees last month accuses Fox News Comptroller Judy Slater of targeting employees with racial insults over a period of years.

According to Sherman’s sources, attorneys for the victims have sent a letter to Fox News detailing additional allegations that Slater forced black women to arm wrestle white women.

The letter also includes new allegations of racism in Fox News’s accounting department. According to the plaintiffs’ attorneys, Slater demanded that black employees hold “arm wrestling matches’” with white female employees in her office, just down the hall from Ailes’s office on the 2nd floor of Fox headquarters. “Forcing a black woman employee to ‘fight’ for the amusement and pleasure of her white superiors is horrifying. This highly offensive and humiliating act is reminiscent of Jim Crow era battle royals,” the letter says, referring to the practice of paying black men to fight blindfolded at carnivals for white spectators’ entertainment. The lawyers argue that Efinger bragged about wanting to “fight” a black employee.

Former Fox News contributor Debbie Schlussel says Fox News host Sean Hannity tried to pressure her into accompanying him to his hotel room for sex, according to a bombshell report from KFAQ radio.

“Columnist, attorney, and former Fox News contributor Debbie Schlussel appeared on today’s Pat Campbell Show and accused Fox News Prime Time Host Sean Hannity of the same type of behavior that lead to Bill O’Reilly leaving the beleaguered network earlier this week,” said the station’s website.

Schlussel told radio host Pat Campbell that she and Hannity attended a live taping together in Detroit and after the show, Hannity propositioned her, trying to lure her back to his hotel room.

“This kind of stuff is all over the place at Fox News and anything that has to do with Sean Hannity,” she said.

New York Magazine‘s Gabriel Sherman pointed out the report on Twitter Sunday, writing, “Fox News contributor Debbie Schlussel accuses @seanhannity of inviting her to his hotel room after taping his show.”

Fox hacked Andrea Tantaros’ phone and used her dead brother in campaign of psychological torture: lawsuit

Fox News executives conducted a campaign of electronic surveillance and “cyberstalking on steroids” against former host Andrea Tantaros, according to a lawsuit filed this week.

Tantaros has previously accused former Chairman Roger Ailes and former host Bill O’Reilly of sexual harassment. But her sexual harassment lawsuit has been put on hold due to a private arbitration agreement.

NPR reported that the lawsuit filed on Monday claims co-President Bill Shine and other executives paid media consultants to spy on Tantaros’ electronic communications. The information gathered was allegedly fed into a social media campaign intent on undermining her determination to pursue sexual harassment charges against the network.

The lawsuit says that information about Tantaros’ private communications began to appear on social media “sockpuppet” accounts beginning in 2016 after she refused a $1 million payout from Fox News.

“The criminal scheme has continued unabated through the date of this Complaint, long after the end of Ms. Tantaros’ employment by Fox News and Ailes’ departure from the network,” the lawsuit states. “[T]he Defendants devastated Ms. Tantaros by illegally surveilling her emails and telephone conversations and then communicating that they were doing so through cruel social media posts — conduct which has continued to the present.”

The complaint details one instance of receiving sockpuppet tweets about the movie The Black Scorpion after Tantaros had conversations about a close friend who was hospitalized for a scorpion bite.

Tantaros also received social media harassment about her dead brother. In one case, she was speaking to her dead brother’s children at Disneyland when she was sent a photo on Twitter of Mickey Mouse hugging two children. The caption read: “Mickey Mouse and ‘new friends’.”

Tantaros’s attorney, Judd Burstein, told NPR that the campaign was “not just cyberstalking.”

“This is cyberstalking on steroids, because, as alleged in the complaint, they harassed her through sock-puppet social media accounts which conveyed the illegal fruits of their electronic surveillance of her,” Burstein said. “It was in essence two crimes committed at the same time.”

Fox News outside counsel Dechert, LLP provided Raw Story with the following statement: “Fox News and its executives flatly deny that they conducted any electronic surveillance of Ms. Tantaros. They have no knowledge of the anonymous or pseudonymous tweets described in her complaint. Even Bill O’Reilly’s fans wanted him fired, poll shows

Even Bill O'Reilly's fans thought an abrupt exit from Fox News was necessary after a string of settlements to satisfy sexual harassment claims, a new poll released Tuesday showed.

The 67-year-old conservative news and ratings titan parted ways with Fox News last week after more than 20 years of service and millions in revenue amidst sponsor defections and widespread criticism about the work culture at the right-leaning cable channel. A Morning Consult poll found 60 percent of “O’Reilly Factor” viewers said canceling the show was the right move, while only 30 percent disagreed. In the same vein, 57 percent of those who voted for President Donald Trump, an ardent supporter of O’Reilly’s who said he was a good guy as the scandal started to engulf Fox News, as well as Republicans, thought parent company 21st Century Fox was warranted in moving on.

Still, while Fox News scrambled and elevated Tucker Carlson to O’Reilly’s old time slot of 8 p.m. EST—though he recently lost out in a key demographic to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow in March at his old 9 p.m. slot—there is hope for an O'Reilly return elsewhere. The poll showed a majority of O’Reilly’s viewers, 57 percent, would watch him on another network. Though only 39 percent of Trump supporters shared the same view, while 40 percent said they would not follow O’Reilly if he landed a similar cable show on another network.

A lack of options for his particular brand could stall that potential television comeback. Fox News has dominated the 24-hour cable channel ratings for years, with O'Reilly's spitfire, right-leaning takes long bringing in the largest cable news audience. But other than the Blaze or One America News, there are very few television options that fit O'Reilly's persona.

O'Reilly issued a statement to the New York Times about its reporting of $13 million in payments—$10 million of which came from his own pocket —made to women who accused him of sexual misconduct but otherwise hadn't addressed the scandal until his podcast on Monday.

On the No Spin News show, O'Reilly offered an almost-promise that there was more to the scandal. “I’m very confident the truth will come out,” O’Reilly said at the podcast’s opening.

The online poll, conducted April 20 to 24, garnered results from 2,412 adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Fox News anchor joins lawsuit alleging racial discrimination, harassment at network

Fox News' legal troubles grew even larger Tuesday, with new plaintiffs, including an anchor, joining a suit alleging racial discrimination and harassment at the network.
The suit is now headlined by Kelly Wright, a black reporter and anchor who has been with Fox News since 2003. Wright claims that he "has been effectively sidelined and asked to perform the role of a 'Jim Crow' -- the racist caricature of a Black entertainer."

Wright's allegations involve, among others, recently fired Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and current network co-president Bill Shine.

The suit claims that Wright was shunned from O'Reilly's now-canceled program, "The O'Reilly Factor," and that Shine "has demonstrated an obsession with race when it comes to discussions with Mr. Wright, including regularly asking him, 'how do Black people react to you' and 'how do you think White viewers look at you?'"

In one alleged example, Wright claims that he was rebuffed in his efforts to show a series of positive stories about the African-American community on the "Factor" because, according to the complaint, "it showed Blacks in 'too positive' a light."

Wright is one of 13 plaintiffs, all people of color who are either current or former Fox News employees, to sue the network in the last month charging racial discrimination.

The litigation began last month, when two black women filed a lawsuit saying they faced "top-down racial harassment" from Judith Slater, Fox's now-former comptroller.

The two plaintiffs, Tichaona Brown and Tabrese Wright, accused Slater of making a number of racially insensitive remarks.

"These are meritless and frivolous lawsuits and all claims of racial discrimination against Ms. Slater are completely false. We have yet to see the alleged additions to the original lawsuit. Given how outrageous and offensive these suits are, it's incomprehensible to imagine how anyone has joined or would join these legal actions," Catherine M. Foti, an attorney for Slater, said in a statement.

Fox said that it fired Slater on February 28, upon learning of the allegations. Attorneys for the 13 plaintiffs say Fox's assertion that it acted swiftly is "completely false."

A separate complaint filed Tuesday on behalf of Adasa Blanco, a former senior disbursement coordinator in Fox News' accounts payable department, alleges that "Slater was terminated because Fox knew this would become a public matter and wanted to salvage its reputation."

Blanco, who claims her repeated complaints about Slater's behavior were ignored, is seeking redress for "substantial monetary damages and severe mental anguish and emotional distress." The suit targets Fox News' top lawyer, Dianne Brandi.

Fox News pushed back hard on the allegations levied in each complaint on Tuesday.

"FOX News and Dianne Brandi vehemently deny the race discrimination claims in both lawsuits," a Fox News spokesperson said. "They are copycat complaints of the original one filed last month. We will vigorously defend these cases."

The complaints filed Tuesday also included allegations from Musfiq Rahman, described in the court document as "a dark-skinned Bangladeshi" who previously worked in Fox's payroll department.

Rahman, the complaint asserts, "suffered unconscionable and unrelenting race discrimination," including an awkward encounter in 2014 with former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes.

According to the complaint, Rahman mistakenly entered Ailes's office on the second floor.

"The fallout for Mr. Rahman's 'mistake' was swift and severe," the complaint says. "Ailes was furious and his paranoia about being attacked came to the forefront. That same day, Ailes ordered that a wall be constructed immediately in his personal office to act as a barrier to entry."

It goes on to say that, the following day, Rahman and "a number of Black employees in the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Departments, had their security passes to the second floor revoked."

Tuesday's filings represent a continuation of what has been a nightmarish month for Fox News and its parent company, 21st Century Fox. O'Reilly, long the top-rated host in cable news, was ousted last week following a New York Times report detailing settlements paid to five women who had accused him of sexual harassment or verbal abuse. O'Reilly has denied the merits of all the claims against him.

The revelations of O'Reilly's settlements came nine months after Ailes was forced out of Fox amid sexual harassment allegations against him. Ailes has vigorously denied the allegations.

Douglas Wigdor and Jeanne Christensen, the attorneys representing all 13 plaintiffs, said in a statement Tuesday that 21st Century Fox "has been operating as if it should be called 18th Century Fox."

"We sincerely hope the filing of this race class action wakes 21st Century Fox from its slumbers and inspires the Company to take a conciliatory and appropriate approach to remedy its wrongs," the attorneys said.

Just one day after taking heat for making a crude joke about Ivanka Trump, Fox News host Jesse Watters has announced that he will be taking a vacation.

During his show on Wednesday night, Watters said that he was “going to be taking a vacation with my family,” although he said that he would be back by Monday.

Watters’ sudden vacation announcement is notable because it’s similar to the vacation taken by former Fox host Bill O’Reilly shortly before he was fired from the network over multiple sexual harassment allegations.

The trouble for Watters started on Tuesday, when he said that he liked the way that Ivanka Trump was “speaking into that microphone” during a panel discussion on The Five, as he smiled and made a gesture with his hands that seemed to imply he was talking about oral sex.

After a facing a backlash for his joke, Watters took to social media to say that he wasn’t actually making a joke about oral sex.

“On air I was referring to Ivanka’s voice and how it resonates like a smooth jazz radio DJ,” Watters wrote on Twitter. “This was in no way a joke about anything else.”

Diehard Bill O’Reilly fans are boycotting Fox News for letting the embattled host go

Following a steady stream of sexual harassment lawsuits, Fox News revealed Wednesday that Bill O’Reilly would not be returning to “The O’Reilly Factor” after his vacation ends later this month.

Due to his longstanding reputation as the king of cable news, the bombshell announcement has left loyal viewers infuriated. O’Reilly ‘Factor’ fans are even “threatening to boycott Fox News as a form of protest,” announced Young Turks guest commentator Hannah Cranston on Thursday.

Fans have now “taken their concerns to Facebook [though] Fox News’ Facebook hasn’t actually addressed the issue yet,” Cranston noted, before reading some of her favorites.

“Sorry, but as a [woman], I know far [too] well what the thought of dollars does to some and face it, men with cash and position will get hit, so get the facts, admit [you’re] wrong, take him back, or sink into the sh*thole CNN is in. Y’all deserve each other,” one respondent advised.

“I wonder if [she] really thought she is pro-women, or is she like, no, women are terrible, I know because as a woman I know there’s a lot of money-grubbing people out there,” “Young Turks” host Cenk Uygur wondered in response.

He connected the sentiment with that of many women he’s interviewed on the campaign trail who were vehemently opposed to Hillary Clinton for one specific reason.

“There were women saying, we can’t have a woman president, that is dangerous,” Uygur pointed out. Therefore, the woman who posted on Facebook “might either be like, ‘yea, that’s awesome, men are better than us’ or she might actually think that she is a champion of women and other women are just looking for cash.”
