No, I'm not making any connection, just the observation that people who want guns for reasons other than shooting a piece of cardboard can still get them.

I don't think people in the UK realise just how difficult it was to get a firearms certificate prior to them being revoked in 1997. It was a comparative pushover to get a shotgun license, which probably explains why it was the preferred method (in the sawn-off variety) of making withdrawals at the local bank.

So, the sport of pistol-shooting has gone, and the sport of people-shooting is escalating.

i dont think gun ownership is a disease.. or some post modern male reaction to the ambiguous nature of what is considered 'manly' in people's eyes these days..

people have their hobbies.. to some its video games.. to some its stamps.. to some its bird watching.. to some like timberwolf its gun collecting.. its no more disease ridden than sword collecting or building computers in your free time..

now i personally dont see the point in having such high powered weaponry.. i own a gun myself but its a very small pistol.. entirely for self defence.. but if someone takes care of them.. gets the licenses for it.. takes the classes.. knows how to handle them.. stores them correctly.. is responsible with the weapons.. then who are we to tell him he cannot enjoy his hobby?? or to even call him twisted or a redneck??

I really don't understand Americans and their lack of common sense when it comes to guns - and I think I've been completely consistent - never once saying anything about guns than what I've said before - so it's quite normal behaviour to get your guns out, make silly things with them, let your animals play with them as well.

Your own reasoning seems to be - I've got one, so it's cool - how many people have got to be slaughtered by "good guys" with guns in America, before you people get your heads out of the mud, smell the roses and decide that something needs to be done about it.

The common reasoning is for protection. This is a dangerous purpose for most people. You have to be ready to put a bullet in someone and be focused enough to be sure of your target and not shoot a family member.
Too many people panic in that situation and start shooting before they confirm their target.
The other problem is someone who breaks into the home is a predator and already has the mindset of causing harm, he will be at an advantage against the homeowner who was peacefully sleeping.

I agree human nature is the key - however I also feel that the ability to harm more people is there with a gun compared to a knife or most other forms of assault. TW has a sub machine gun with 10 magazines of ammunition - I personally think you could do a lot more damage with that or a handgun with 10 bullets in it than with a kitchen knife? So banning guns would be a good start - not the be all and end all !
