Here is the difference. Thomas Jefferson did actually own slaves like many of the founders including George Washington. But at the same time Washington freed his slaves and Jefferson freed at least some of his. But that was also at the very beginning of our nation which they fought for and built. Which is why we honor them and I don't think you will find many that disagree with that.

While on the other hand the statues and confederate flags that are being removed celebrate people who tried to keep their slaves and tried to tear the country apart and were actually traitors to the United States of America. And they are also statues and flags that started to appear in the fairly recent past (1920-60's) specifically to celebrate white supremacy and segregation.
