Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be holding fa conference call this morning to discuss with Democrats how they should proceed after the release of the Mueller report. The speculation is she will try to knock down talk of impeachment and instead will say they should move ahead with hearings to better inform the American people about Trump's historical corruption. Which is a smart move because even thought the Mueller report is number one on Amazon and Trump is taking a hit on his approval rating the vast majority of Americans are not going to read the Mueller report. So the best way to inform them is in public hearings.

Pelosi issues statement on impeachment as #ImpeachDonaldTrump trends on social media

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi issued a statement Monday afternoon discussing the path forward on any possible impeachment of President Donald Trump, just as #ImpeachDonaldTrump was trending on Twitter.

The Speaker did not appear to change her previously stated opinion of not wanting to “go down that path” because Trump is “not worth” impeaching, but did acknowledge the growing number of Democrats who are calling for the House to impeach the President.

“While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth,” she wrote in her letter to her Democratic colleagues (below). “It is also important to know that the facts regarding holding the President accountable can be gained outside of impeachment hearings.”

“As we proceed to uncover the truth and present additional needed reforms to protect our democracy, we must show the American people we are proceeding free from passion or prejudice, strictly on the presentation of fact.”

Promising to “scrupulously assert Congress’ constitutional duty to honor our oath of office to support and defend the Constitution and our democracy,” Speaker Pelosi insisted on making sure “the American people can learn the truth and Congress can make our decision on how to proceed.”

Pelosi Tries to Pacify Dems Calling to Oust Trump: We Can Hold Him Accountable ‘Outside of Impeachment’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to her fellow Congressional Democrats on Monday in an apparent effort to curb talk about impeaching President Donald Trump.

Following the release of Robert Mueller‘s report, numerous Trump critics have renewed their calls for Congress to remove the president from office in light of his multiple, documented attempts to obstruct justice. In her letter letter Monday, Pelosi says Trump has engaged in “unethical and unscrupulous” behavior, made “repeated efforts to thwart cooperation,” and the matter of indictment is an open-ended question.

However, the House Speaker also tells her colleagues that holding Trump accountable and performing Congressional oversight on his actions is possible “outside of impeachment hearings.”

“While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth. The issue of impeachment has been a source of contention among Democrats for the past few months. Pelosi previously said that impeachment was “not worthwhile.” And last week, House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) came out against impeachment. But others such as, notably, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) say they support impeachment.

Princess Pelosi knows that an impeachment hearing is senseless and has no grounds.

Fox News is told by two senior sources on the conference call that even House Financial Services Committee Chair Maxine Waters, an anti-Trump firebrand, told fellow Democrats that while she personally favored going forward with impeachment proceedings, she was not pushing for other members to join her.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team were clear there are no immediate plans to move forward with impeachment, Fox News is also told. Well-placed sources say it was a spirited 87-minute call.

In a conference call with House Democrats on Monday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) reportedly told her caucus that they should not rush into impeachment of President Donald Trump in the wake of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, and begin by pursuing additional investigations — but that if the facts of the investigation support impeaching the president, she would not stand in the way.

“We don’t have to go to articles of impeachment to obtain the facts, the presentation of facts,” Pelosi said. But, if impeachment was the “place the facts take us, that’s the place we have to go.”

Since Mueller’s report detailed compelling evidence that Trump may have committed obstruction of justice to bury the Russia investigation, several Democrats, including presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), have called for impeachment. Thus far, Pelosi and other Democratic leaders have resisted the idea of immediately pushing for that route.

No we just have to keep batting down the lies. Such as AG Barr lied when he said there was no collusion because Mueller didn't look at collusion because it has no legal definition. And Mueller found 147 contacts between members of the Trump campaign and Russia and lots of actions mutually beneficial. But what he could not prove beyond reasonable doubt was a criminal conspiracy. Because witnesses lied and destroyed evidence.

Then Mueller could not indict a sitting president so he handed the obstruction of justice over to Congress. But also hinted Trump could be indicted once he leaves office.

And Mueller was not able to look into Trump's financial ties to Russia. But Congress can which is why they will be holding public hearings.

And anyone who refused to cooperate with congress was taken straight to jail.The jail was torn down to make room for the Supreme Court. The House of Representatives can send the Sergeant of Arms to arrest members of Donald Trump’s administration who do not comply with subpoenas a Democratic member of Congress explained on MSNBC.

Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI), who sits on the Judiciary Committee, was interviewed on “Hardball” by Chris Matthews on Thursday.

“Democrats seeking to hold President Trump accountable say they are going to gather evidence and hold hearings in order to establish a record of Trump’s wrong-doing. And then and only then it seems they will decide whether to impeach him,” Matthews noted.

“The problem is the White House is already stonewalling three congressional committees that have requested or subpoenaed evidence related to the president,” Matthews noted.

Matthews asked Cicilline if Democrats were worried about Trump’s stalling tactics.

“Do you have confidence the clock is on your side?” Matthews asked.

“Yes, absolutely,” Cicilline replied. “First of all Chris, Congress cannot allow the president to prevent us from conducting our oversight.”

“There are three things Congress can do if witnesses refuse to comply with a lawfully issued subpoena,” he explained.

“One is refer to the Department of Justice for prosecution because that’s a crime,” he noted. “We don’t have a lot confidence Mr. Barr will do that.”

“The second is start a civil proceeding and get a citation from the court that would judge that person in contempt and do it that way,” he continued.

“But there’s a third method which we can do right away. Since 1821, the Supreme Court has recognized the inherent right of Congress to hold individuals in contempt and to imprison them,” Cicilline explained.

“Congress has the responsibility — and I would say the obligation — to hold individuals in contempt who do not comply with a lawful subpoena, who do not produce documents, and we ought to be prepared to imprison them because we have that inherent right,” he explained.

“I love you congressman, but let me ask you this, how do you do it?” Matthews asked. “The Sergeant of Arms in the House to go pick up the Secretary of the Treasury, break past his Secret Service agents and grab him and take him to Capitol Hill and put him in some [unintelligible]?”

“Chris, that’s exactly what happened in 1935, they put the person in custody for 10 days,” Cicilline replied. “Congress has to be serious about this.”

“We have three ways to make sure the witnesses comply and we have to use them,” he added.

Some Dem chairmen have changed tune on Trump impeachment

House Democratic chairmen who cast votes in favor of impeaching President Trump while Republicans controlled the chamber now say it’s too soon to hit the gas on starting impeachment proceedings.

The senior Democratic lawmakers, who voted in favor of impeachment articles from Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) in the last Congress, are largely toeing their leadership’s line of caution, saying committees should move forward with investigations of Trump.

The committee leaders who voted in favor of Green's impeachment articles in 2017 and 2018 either once or both times include Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (N.Y.), Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (Miss.), Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern (Mass.), Science Committee Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (Texas), Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone Jr. (N.J.), Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia Velázquez (N.Y.) and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Raúl Grijalva (Ariz.).

Engel and Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) are both leading investigations of Trump; Waters is notable in having called for Trump’s impeachment before and after the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

Engel, who backed impeachment in separate votes in 2017 and 2018, echoed Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) during a conference call earlier this week with Democrats.

Engel said that Democrats “should be cautious” with impeachment, according to a source on the call, while explaining how his panel is investigating Russian interference.

“We need to look at this bizarre relationship between Putin and Trump,” Engel said during the call.

He added that he’s directing staff to inform foreign governments that do business with Trump hotels that they may be contributing to a violation of the Constitution's Emoluments Clause, which is an issue that progressives like billionaire activist Tom Steyer have cited in calling for impeachment.

Johnson, who also voted in favor of Green’s impeachment resolution, took a similar tack.

“Impeachment is a sacred constitutional responsibility entrusted to Congress. I am committed to continuing to conduct oversight into the president’s conduct and wrongdoing as well as serving as a check on the president. This is what House Democrats were elected into the majority to do, and this is what we will do while Senate Republicans repeatedly show that they are willing to look the other way,” Johnson said in a statement.

McGovern deferred to the Judiciary Committee but didn't rule out the prospect of impeachment.

"He trusts Chairman [Jerrold] Nadler’s leadership on this issue. But given Special Counsel Mueller’s report and the president’s continued stonewalling of Congressional oversight requests, he doesn’t believe any options should be taken off the table," McGovern spokesman Matt Bonaccorsi said.

Two members of Democratic leadership who, like Green, are members of the Congressional Black Caucus, at one point or another supported the efforts. Green alleged in his articles of impeachment that Trump was inflaming racial tensions in America.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) voted in favor of Green's articles of impeachment in 2017 but joined other Democratic leaders the second time in voting to table them. The votes forced by Green drew the support of 58 Democrats the first time and 66 a month later, but the majority of his colleagues joined leadership in rejecting the efforts.

“His vote in 2017 was to express his disapproval of the president on the record,” Clyburn spokeswoman Hope Derrick said.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), voted to table Green's articles the first time but voted in favor of them in January 2018 after Trump came under fire for deriding protections for immigrants from “shithole” African countries.

Democratic chairmen face some pressure to back Pelosi, who has argued it would be unwise to move forward with impeachment given the likelihood that the Republican Senate would not convict Trump. Pelosi also remembers how impeachment boomeranged on House Republicans in the Clinton era.

Most of the calls to move forward on impeachment have come from liberal members of the Democratic caucus. Pelosi is worried impeachment could be used by Republicans against many of the vulnerable Democrats who won swing districts in 2018.

Waters is one committee chair who backed Green’s call for impeachment when Democrats were in the minority, and has kept her position in the majority.

In the wake of Mueller’s report, she said she still supports impeachment.

“Mueller kicked the impeachment ball to the Congress. The Constitution gives the responsibility to Congress to impeach an unfit president — 'high crimes and misdemeanors.' What more do we need? #impeach45,” Waters wrote in a series of tweets this week.

She also made a point of noting that impeachment is in House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler's (D-N.Y.) court, writing that “Dems divided. The impeachment resolution must start with & be taken up by the Judiciary Committee. Rep. Nadler is the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.”

Nadler, as well as Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), did not vote in favor of Green's efforts.

Thompson, meanwhile, notably retweeted a message from Green last week calling for impeachment. A spokesman for Thompson did not return requests for comment.

Other committee leaders who voted in favor of Green's articles in the past avoided mentioning the word impeachment at all when reacting to the release of Mueller's report and instead joined calls for the full, unredacted version of the special counsel's findings. Both Pallone and Velazquez cast doubt on Attorney General William Barr and said they wanted to see Mueller testify before Congress.

Grijalva, meanwhile, indicated that impeachment isn't a realistic option compared to asking voters to make the decision whether to oust Trump.

“Election time is when you beat Trump,” Grijalva told Politico.

Green told The Hill that he's waiting to see what the Judiciary Committee does next before forcing a third vote on impeachment, which he’s threatened since February.

Green has cosponsored articles of impeachment from Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) arguing that Trump obstructed justice by firing James Comey as FBI director as well as a resolution from Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) calling on the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether Trump has committed impeachable offenses. But Green has yet to unveil a new impeachment resolution of his own this year.

“I'm going to give the committee an opportunity to act,” Green said in a phone interview. “But if the committee doesn't act, I'm not going to let my record show that a president who was unfit, who has obstructed justice, is above the law.”

Green said that he's not lobbying colleagues on impeachment, saying that “under these circumstances, it is better to stand alone than not stand at all.”

Trump hates the infrastructure plan his own White House has crafted — so he’s turning to Democrats

President Donald Trump has been promising to do something about the state of roads, bridges as well as water and sewage delivery, since his 2015 campaign launch. After two years, however, no meaningful legislation has passed and nothing was proposed to Congress.

Axios reported Sunday that Trump’s proposed 2020 budget calls for $200 billion in additional spending on infrastructure. That’s a far cry from the $2 trillion the president told Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) he wanted to spend. While the president is known for inflating the size of his crowds, hands and assets, and now it seems he’s moved on to the size of his infrastructure package.

Trump will meet Tuesday with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to talk about his plans, but if history is any lesson, this meeting will be nothing more than a media circus. “Democrats know that left to his own devices; Trump would happily spend a ton of federal” dollars on building things, that likely include his wall, Axios said.

They revealed the dirty secret of the Trump White House is that the president actually hates the ideas his White House infrastructure package, senior White House officials told Axios. He’s spent the better part of the past months calling it “Gary’s plan” from economic advisor Gary Cohn. It would create a public-private partnership that uses only a small amount of taxpayer dollars to invest in projects.

Democrats have little interest in a public-private partnership, and Trump doesn’t either. Instead, they’d like to see “real” federal dollars invested in rebuilding the country the way the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 did in its day. While it was a partnership between Congress and FDR, Trump sees Eisenhower as the “infrastructure president” because highway systems were named after him, one source in a 2017 meeting told Axios.

“But we’re going to do double, triple, quadruple, what Eisenhower did,” Trump reportedly said during the meeting.

Trump, who hasn’t had any experience in government, though he could come into the White House and begin his projects immediately. He didn’t seem to know that Congress controls the budget.

“There was a genuine naivety about the prospect of Democrats and Republicans coming together to do something on a grand scale with infrastructure,” a former White House official told Axios. “It was one of those things where Trump said it was gonna be easy. He really thought so.”

For now, it’s merely an “ongoing discussion” between Trump and Democrats contrasting with Trump’s own government and his party. It’s unclear if Republicans will allow Trump to work with Democrats on their mutual pet project, however.

Trump wings it at his "Chuck 'n Nancy" meetings. But Schumer and Pelosi spend a lot of time choreographing these meetings, according to sources familiar with their planning. They list off things they won't budge on and game out how to respond to Trump’s inevitable curve balls (such as calling in the TV cameras to watch them spar).

Here's what Democrats will demand in Tuesday's infrastructure discussion, per a source familiar:

Any infrastructure bill "must be real money." Translation: Major federal spending, not through public-private partnerships or deregulation.

They need to know where the money is coming from. Translation: Trump must be willing to discuss tax hikes to pay for new spending if he wants their support. (Senate Democrats put out a plan last year that proposed raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 25% — still much lower than it was before Trump's tax cuts.)

The bill must include strong labor protections and must require that materials used be American-made.

The bill must address climate change, with major investments in renewable energy. (Chuck Schumer gave insight into this in his December op-ed and letter to the president.)

Nancy Pelosi really hopes Trump ‘learned his lesson’ after looking like a fool in their last meeting

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are set to meet with President Donald Trump Tuesday to discuss a possible coalition to craft and pass a landmark bipartisan infrastructure bill. Pelosi told reporters she hoped that the president understood that having the meeting in front of the cameras was a really bad idea.

In a meeting leading into the government shutdown, Trump was led into saying he would take full responsibility for the government shutdown. It didn’t end well for him, putting the White House and the Republicans in a bind.

“I hope he has learned his lesson” after televising the last meeting, Pelosi said in a leadership meeting Monday night, Politico reported.

Republican leadership in the House have already cautioned Trump against making a deal with Democrats. It foreshadows a possible showdown of whether the GOP controls Trump or Trump controls the GOP.
