Bob Woodward says Trump fans should fear the ‘nervous breakdown’ in the White House

Bob Woodward believes even the strongest supporters of President Donald Trump would be alarmed if they witnessed the inner workings of the White House.

The veteran journalist and author said his new book, Fear, captures the same sense of chaos and backstabbing depicted in Michael Wolff’s book, Fire and Fury, although Woodward said he focused more on the decision-making process — or lack thereof, reported New York Magazine.

“I think (Wolff’s book) got the sociology largely right, the relationships and so forth,” Woodward said. “But 50 years from now what’s going to be important about the Trump presidency is what he does or doesn’t do, and if I’m right, as I believe I am, it’s a nervous breakdown.”

Woodward was clearly alarmed by what he witnessed inside the White House, and he said Trump supporters should be worried.

“Exactly what’s on display there, nervous breakdown,” he said. “Things are not connected. There is not … there is impulse, decisions. I think that the most ardent Trump supporter could read the book and not feel comfortable about the management and the staying the course. There’s not a team. You know, it’s a team of predators, or people who just disagree with the president.”

The author said there’s simply no other way to describe what’s going on in the executive branch.

“I think it’s accurate, and I think it’s demonstrated,” Woodward said. “This is kind of what I got. What’s the summary here? Nervous breakdown.”

Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that Woodward’s takedown of President Donald Trump has sold more than 1.1 million copies just a week after publication. ‘When I learned that I got a chill’: Bob Woodward reveals the scariest thing he knows about Trump to HBO’s Bill Maher

On Friday, HBO’s Bill Maher interviewed Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Bob Woodward, one of the journalists who broke the Watergate scandal that brought down President Nixon.

The two men discussed Woodward’s book, Fear, and Trump’s ability to scare so many Republicans into supporting him. Trump is fundamentally changing the country, the men agreed.

“He’s gambling with who we are and what the country is,” Woodward said.

Maher said he doesn’t see a scenario where Trump gives up his office willingly, and that Trump’s current protests of the election results in Florida are a “dress rehearsal” for a coup.

“It is part of his being to get power over people—to crush them, to demean them,” Woodward said. “What astonished me is getting close to the people who are close to him, the closer they were, the more they worked with him, the more anxiety and fear, so they would do things like steal documents off his desk.”

Woodward said that he would often talk to aides who explained why the United States did certain things to Trump, who did not understand them. Many times the reason came down to “so we don’t have World War III,” which Trump never seemed to fully grasp.

“When I learned about that, I got a chill,” Woodward said.

Bob Woodward's Fear: Trump in the White House has sold a massive number of copies in the first seven days of sales. More than 1.1 million copies of the famed Watergate reporter's book sold within just one week, publisher Simon & Schuster has revealed...

How big are these numbers? Not only does the 1.1 million figure constitute the biggest first-week sales in Simon & Schuster's entire company history, but it dwarfs the similarly massive first-week numbers in 2018's other hit political books...

That impressive number does not come as a surprise following the non-fiction tome's first-day sales numbers: Simon & Schuster announced last week that Fear had sold 750,000 copies on its first day, though they have since revised this number to 900,000, citing delayed reporting for the sales of ebook and digital audio editions of Fear. Those adjusted sales figures sum up the total pre-orders and first day sales across print, audio, digital audio, and ebooks. Pre-order numbers alone accounted for the "largest for any title in Simon & Schuster company history," the publishing company noted.

You may not have heard the name Cliff Sims, but that didn’t stop a publisher from shelling out SEVEN FIGURES to the former Trump aide for a tell-all book about his time in the White House, the New York Times reports.

Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House is the title of Sims’ upcoming book, due for release January 29. Sims, who served as an aide in the White House communications office until he departed after clashing with Chief of Staff John Kelly, has been described as a “MAGA loyalist” by Politico.

But if the title of the expose and advance sum is any indication, the book is not going to be another hagiography from a Trump sycophant. It “does not paint a rosy picture of the atmosphere in the White House,” Maggie Haberman writes.

“An author’s note describes a venomous den in which people are constantly at each other’s throats,” she reports. “But Mr. Sims’s goal, according to people familiar with the book, was not to damage Mr. Trump. And he is said to have at times painted an unflattering portrait of himself.”

Sims was in the White House from day one, after working for the Trump campaign. The president saw him as a “buddy,” the Times notes, and he “kept hundreds of pages of notes during his time at the White House.”

Per the book’s description:

For five hundred days, Sims also witnessed first-hand the infighting and leaking, the anger, joy, and recriminations. He had a role in some of the President’s biggest successes, and he shared the blame for some of his administration’s worst disasters. He gained key, often surprising insights into the players of the Trump West Wing, from Jared Kushner and John Kelly to Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway.

He even helped Trump craft his enemies list, knowing who was loyal and who was not.

Haberman obtained the author’s note of the book, where Sims writes:

“I suspect that posterity will look back on this bizarre time in history like we were living on the pages of a Dickens novel.” He added: “Lincoln famously had his Team of Rivals. Trump had his Team of Vipers. We served. We fought. We brought our egos. We brought our personal agendas and vendettas. We were ruthless. And some of us, I assume, were good people.”

“I was there. This is what I saw. And, unlike the many leakers in the White House, I have put my name on it.”

Trump has been fucking over and stabbing people who work for him in the back all his life. But before could make them sign NDAs, intimidate them, or buy them off if he had to so they didn't go around revealing just how terrible he is. But he can't do that as president so it seems like everyone who leaves his administration is writing a "tell all book" trashing him and the White House.

There are actually two new books right now. One by Chris Christie that is mostly a hit job and revenge on Jared Kushner. But the other one is Team Of Vipers which is pretty much living up to the hype. And there are a lot of reasons for that but two of the biggest is most people have never heard of White House aide Cliff Sims so he sort of gets the benefit of the doubt. But the other reason is even though most people have never heard of Sims he was one of Trump's most trusted aides and had more access to more things than almost anyone else who wrote about Trump. And he is none too kind as the title implies. Which is why nearly everyone is writing about it.

Kellyanne Conway stands ‘in a class of her own’ when it comes to slimy White House power games: Ex-Trump aide

Former Trump White House aide Cliff Sims alleges that White House counselor Kellyanne Conway is by far the nastiest and most vicious “viper” in the president’s inner circle.

As reported in a review by The Guardian, Sims’ new book — entitled “Team of Vipers” — claims that Conway is constantly backstabbing her colleagues by bad-mouthing them to reporters, even as she then attacks those reporters for writing “fake news” stories about White House infighting.

“Kellyanne stood in a class of [her] own in terms of her machinations,” Sims writes of Conway’s constant scheming. “I had to admire her sheer gall.”

Sims says that Conway routinely trashed top Trump officials including Jared Kushner, Reince Priebus, Steve Bannon and Sean Spicer to reporters, and he also claims she spilled the beans to reporters about conversations she’d had with Trump that were supposedly private.

Elsewhere in the book, Sims laments that White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders often went into press conferences without complete or accurate information, which he says reflects the fact that she “didn’t press as hard as she could have for the rock-bottom truth.”

This meant she would have to perform “gymnastics with the truth would tax even the nimblest of prevaricators, and Sanders was not that.”

‘I saved your ass’: Trump told Paul Ryan he was ‘dying like a dog’ in his own state according to new book

Former White House communications aide Cliff Sims is set to release his book “Team of Vipers” in the coming weeks. The book details his time in the White House and is an up-close look at President Donald Trump.

In his book, he mentions Trump’s treatment towards outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI.)

In one chapter of the book, Trump is seen as “increasingly angry” at Ryan’s news coverage in the aftermath of the Charlotteville rally.

“President Trump watched on television, increasingly angry, as House Speaker Paul D. Ryan criticized his handling of the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. He held the remote control ‘like a pistol’ and yelled for an assistant to get the Republican leader on the phone,” Washington Post writer Philip Rucker said.

“Paul, do you know why Democrats have been kicking your a** for decades? Because they know a little word called ‘loyalty,’” Trump told Ryan in the book. “Why do you think Nancy has held on this long? Have you seen her? She’s a disaster. Every time she opens her mouth another Republican gets elected. But they stick with her . . . Why can’t you be loyal to your president, Paul?”

The book continues to describe Trump “torment” towards Ryan. Sims shows Trump as calling Ryan a “dog” in need of saving.

“I remember being in Wisconsin and your own people were booing you,” Trump said to Ryan according to Sims. “You were out there dying like a dog, Paul. Like a dog! And what’d I do? I saved your a**.”

BUSTED: Kellyanne Conway reportedly ID’d as leaker ‘bad-mouthing’ White House to press

Former President Donald Trump White House aide Cliff Sims revealed that White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway is well-known leaker in the West Wing. In his new book “Team of Vipers” Sims describe his time in the White House.

Vanity Fair published an excerpt from Sim’s book that describes a situation where he saw Conway personally texting messages to reporters.

“At that point, personal phones had not yet been banned in the West Wing, so Kellyanne was sitting at her desk texting away. And since her iMessage account was tied to both her phone and her laptop, which she must not have even considered, I could inadvertently see every conversation she was having,” Sim’s said after explaining he was working on Conway’s computer for work.

“Over the course of 20 minutes or so, she was having simultaneous conversations with no fewer than half-dozen reporters, most of them from outlets the White House frequently trashed for publishing ‘fake news,'” he wrote.

He added, “Journalists from The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, Politico, and Bloomberg were all popping up on the screen. And these weren’t policy conversations or attempts to fend off attacks on the president. As I sat there trying to type, she bashed Jared Kushner, Reince Priebus, Steve Bannon, and Sean Spicer, all by name.

“The real leakers, past and present, get much more positive press than I do. While it’s rare, I prefer to knife people from the front, so they see it coming,” Conway said in a statement shortly after publication.

“According to a source familiar with the situation, the statement was drafted in consultation with her husband, George Conway,” he wrote.

Trump insults ex-presidents on surreal White House tours for strangers and friends: report

President Donald Trump has invited “hundreds, if not thousands” of guests to tour private areas of the White House, according to a new book, and frequently makes crass or demeaning comments about his predecessors.

The president often shows lawmakers, journalists and other guests where Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky reportedly began their sexual encounters, which Trump punctuates with facial expressions and crude jokes, reported the Washington Post.

The Post obtained an advance copy of former White House aide Cliff Sims’ new book, Team of Vipers, which describes how Trump has guided hundreds of acquaintances and strangers through the White House, into the Oval Office and private residence.

“Most people want to keep parts of the White House private for their families and themselves,” said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley. “He’s very restless and doesn’t like desk work. He’d rather roam around and B.S. with people than hunker down.”

Trump frequently tells guests that his private dining room was in “rough shape” when he arrived, and two White House officials and two other sources confirmed that he claims President Barack Obama spent much of his time there watching television.

*“He just sat in here and watched basketball all day,” Trump told a recent group, and then bragged that he had gotten a much bigger TV than Obama had.

A former Obama White House official denied Trump’s claims about a hole left in the wall, and said the former president rarely worked in the dining room and did not watch basketball there.

The former Obama aide also denied Trump’s claim to tour groups that “no one had ever seen the Oval Office” during his predecessor’s time in the White House, saying the former president often invited friends and staffers’ family members to visit.

Aides say Trump is warm and gracious to his guests, and his mood generally seems lighter while giving tours than when he sits in White House meetings, but sometimes he interrupts his tours to comment on political matters or the special counsel probe.

“There was no collusion,” he recently told a group of lawmakers, according to one of the guests. “It’s completely insane!”

Honestly @shootersa I have been literally laughing at you all morning. Just how stupid can you be? That story is not some unnamed source The source is actually getting to be very well known. And his name is former White House aide Cliff Sims.

And as I said above Sims' book is just one hitting the airways this week. At the same time Chris Christie is also on a book tour saying things like this. Because Christie's book is pure revenge against Jared Kushner for pushing him out of the transition and administration.

The former 2016 candidate who was a primary rival to President Donald Trump before becoming an ally and helping plan Trump’s transition to the White House had sharp words for the president’s daughter and son-in-law, who remain White House staffers.

“Jared gives the worst advice, the president takes it,” co-host Mika Brzezinski said, referencing passages from Christie’s book. “These are two spots, Jared and Ivanka, that could be filled with competent people who could stand up to him and give him good advice.”

“Or not filled at all,” Christie said. “At the end of it what this creates, though, is a difficult situation, which is what I try to describe in the book. I had 140 people working for me at the transition. They worked six months to put together an extraordinary transition plan. And, in fact, when both plans were looked at right before the election, you had objective people saying our plan was even ahead of where Hillary and her plan and her team was. We put together this extraordinary thing. And because a couple of people decide they want to be in charge—Jared, Steve Bannon and Rick Dearborn—they throw all that work out.”

The decision to dump him in favor of vice president-elect Mike Pence has caused chaos, Christie claimed.

“The country’s still paying the price for that because you cannot put this thing together in 71 days,” he said. “Especially when you’ve never been in government before. So all those decisions come back to the detriment of the president and more importantly to the detriment of the country. We still have desks empty in places and things that should be being done are not being done.”
