  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

    Best regards,

    StanleyOG.

Ok this is serious,, and I promise no more posts till after christmas..

If I have two ballons inflated to the same volume. One inflated with just the air around us, nothing special. The second inflated with CO2.

Both the same size (volume) both at the same temp. Both identical except for one has the air around us, and the other CO2.

Will one of them rise???? or will one of them fall????

They will not let me in college so I have to learn on my own..

The one with ordianry air in will fall, because the contents has the same density as the surrounding air, and the balloon itself has a higher density, therefore the total density will be greater than the surrounding air, so it will fall.

I believe that I recall, from memory from school so I may be wrong, that CO2 has a higher density than air, so that would also fall, and probably at a faster rate as the density differential would be that much greater.

    We need J.A.W for this.

They will both fall at the same rate other than for any spurious air currents. They are both heavier than air.

    I think:confused:

If you drop two different objects of different weights from the top of the leaning tower of Pizza what happens.

They hit the ground at the same time

    Then you get arrested

Then the Pizza tower collapses sending pepperoni evetywhere

That goes with my thinking,, but for the life of me I could not figure how to figure the weight of CO2 or air for that matter... So i thought of this.. Yes I am assuming that the ballons both weigh the same.. thanks

You mean they weigh the same before inflation?

After inflation the Co2 balloon is heavier.

My thining was that the CO2 balloon, being the heavier, would be less affected by the air currents so would drop more rapidly, but in still air you should be right.

And make mine a marinara, I'm not so keen on peperoni.

You may have to make differential adjustments according to Avagadro's hypothesis......

    ....did I just say that?

Not sure what the correlation between the atomic or molecular mass and the mass of a fixed sample has to do with the laws of gravity.

    Please explain?

In a vacuum they would both fall at the same speed.......mind you, you'd be dead!!

yep, that what I meant by 'other than for any spurious air currents'

Not only resistance but also wind at this weight.

OK follow on question. Why dont the heavier gasses settle to the bottom of the atmosphere and suffocate us all?

I really should not have let gravity in the problem, for I did not mean to drop them just which one was heavier. I did not want to get into Newton and the acceleration from gravity at feet 32 per second per second

The percentage by volume of CO2 in the atmosphere is tiny compared to nitrogen and oxygen........or at least it was!!

This is what this is leading up to.. CO2 is not at a level that it is dangerious,, or at least we do not think so... so every one has grandchildren that die of cancer.. that is an unknown.. CO2 at .03% of our air.. that is not even an odor. Yet! Also the CO2 content of the air varies around the globe..

In some of the information given out by the government has the greenhouse gases and listed as CO2 and the most prominent, going into the atmosphere and sending the reflected sun rays from the earth back to the earth for additional heating from the sun.

CO2 is heavier and lays closer to the earth, and is mixed into the air by our winds both surface and troposphere. CO2 does settle back down when carried aloft, but at such a slow pace that it can easiely be ignored.. Layers of CO2 can be seen at times as it accumulates over sea shores.... it is combined with water vapor, and will catch the light from a setting sun..

Nope, In a vacum the balloon would expand and burst.
