but some scintist somewhere had WAY too much time on there hands and found out that a piece of string is on advridge 34.7 cm long

The "scientific" answer looked something like this:

and was based on twin assumptions; one, that you can't have a piece of string shorter than 1mm. because it would not retain enough structural integrity to be classed as string; and two, that you couldn't have one longer than .. some number or other .. because of physical constraints. You can't, for example, have a piece of string a billion miles long, because it would collapse under its own gravity pull.

I forget the exact numbers that were involved. I just remember thinking that whoever worked all this out would probably be a grave danger to society if they weren't safely ensconced in a university somewhere thinking up completely ridiculous answers to questions that weren't supposed to be answered.

The layman's answer is "twice as long as half a piece."

If you were AT the centre of the Earth, gravitational pull would indeed be zero and you would not move. However, I'm not sure if you'd ever come to a complete stop by jumping down such a hole; you might be rocketing past the centre at such high speed that you'd come to a stop 5,000 miles beyond it, then fall back in, and keep oscillating forever. A better physicist than me would have to work that out.

The word "con" meaning "against" comes from the Latin contra. The Latin word con means "with," and words such as congress come from that root, not from contra. You can't, therefore, apply the above logic to such words.

You can have a new, improved version of an old product. If it's a new product, then it can't be an improved one. (You could also have a new, worsened version of an old product, but what advertiser would ever go with that phrase...)

Assuming: 1 - you could dig a hole to the center of the Earth without it's molten core rushing in to fill the gap and spewing out of the surface like a volcanic eruption, 2 - the immense heat wouldn't incinerate you (as mentioned above), 3 - the super-heated air (at these temperatures it probably isn't air anymore) didn't fry your lungs, 4 - the rotation of the Earth didn't offset your fall and smash you into the molten shaft you theoretically dug (the closer to the core you get the faster the rotation is), 5 - you'd even want to, and 6 - you have a way to get back out once this crazy experiment is over... you'd die on impact with the core since you'd hit terminal velocity before you got past the crust into the mantle. With a static sphere (non-moving) and a shaft straight through the Earth to the other side (and all of the above assumptions taken into account) you would pass the center of gravity until it started to act upon you from the opposing direction and you'd start bobbing back and forth until you settled at the center.
