This question is always coming up about this subject. Did you recieve vaccines as a kid,or no.I did,as well as my three sisters,my mother was adamant about this.She was firmly in the vaccinate Everyone Camp.My wife(who had two kids when we got married)is firmly in the (It's up to the parents camp)I said"You had both of your kids vaccinated "to which she replied "That was my choice"and that is the way it should be.I am in the camp of vaccinate everyone,with measles again on the rise and the specter of the 1918 spanish flu still lurking around.But just what does everyone else think about this,Does the Government have the right to demand parents vaccinate,above their own objections?Are parents that don't ,putting the whole population at risk,or just those that have no immunity to certain diseases A lively discussion is both expected and welcome, I welcome passion on this subject,but leave the name calling at the door.

Now then, anyone who doesn't get vaccinated is an idiot and puts others at risk in my opinion. Entire populations used to get wiped out before vaccinations. Don't be so quick to think they are a danger. Do you think you have a better chance of NOT getting polio WITHOUT a vaccination..? That would be foolish thinking.

 

I'm glad there were polio and small pox vaccines when I was young, because I remember having measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Except for chicken pox, which hit in the summer, the other two meant two weeks out of school. In an age when most children live in a two income home, I'm wondering who misses two weeks of work because their unvaccinated child came down with a preventable disease.

 

So who is responsible for the medical bills and cost of treatment when one of these unvaccinated kids gets sick with something like measles, mumps or something much worse like tetanus, polio or smallpox?

 

If like one who wasn't a minor any longer the victim does.
Otherwise I think that the parents should bear the cost/burden alone, even if they have insurance. If their kid infects others than charge them with endangerment & health care costs.

 

Why do the people who want their kids given the shots get their panties in a wad if other parents do not believe the same?
If their kid has the shots they are protected.

 

Well, but you see Xcebia addressed this issue generations ago.
Those susceptible to various diseases (you haven't been sick until you've suffered a case of itchysweatysexorgasm) are quarantined with each other until they either die or get better.
Then, our scientists pointed out that a simple genetic change would make everyone immune to all the diseases we were finding out in space and on the planets we were conquering.
So supreme commander said "make it so" and every pregnancy was treated to a minor genetic change.
No matter what the three parents (that's right, Xcebians are three sexed. Got a problem with that?) said.

So now, Xcebians can go anywhere, and see any one, and not fear the diseases the rest of you dread.

 

We have this debate at work a lot. I am in the vaccinate your kids camp, and my boss is in the anti-vaccinate camp. Last year when his kids came down with measles while on vacation in Europe, and were quarantined and not allowed to fly home, his daughter angrily reminded him that this was all his fault for not vaccinating them. I was just glad they were over there and not here.

 

I suspect the boss may have changed his opinion. axed him, Dee.

 

If this was 50 years ago would all the pro vax people take up smoking because it's just what the doctor ordered? P.S I'm not repudiating the efficacy of vaccines but I am slightly incredulous as to ethics (or lack of) our system stands by.

 

If a parent expects that their child be allowed to attend any public school they must also expect that their child will be required to have ALL IMMUNIZATIONS and even be kept home when ill with any communicable illness or disease. Public health and safety is more important than their religious or "ethical" objections.

 

I got all those shots... Didn't prevent me from getting measles tho... Of course this was long before the chicken pox vax they have now. Back then all the kids in the neighborhood were sent to the house of the first kid on the block to come down with it to play for a few days. That way we all caught it the same time.

As for if a parent should get their kid these shots... I think yes... But don't feel it should be mandated. However if a parent chooses not to.. then that child should not be permitted in public school.

 

I was lucky to be born in a time when all these vaccines were available except for the chicken pox vaccines.
My mother was not so lucky. There was an outbreak of meningitis and she caught it and had to be put in quarantine when she was a small child. Luckily her uncle was a Dr. and treated her until she was well.
There was only two people that survived that outbreak in her community,she and an a older man.
I would hate to see any child suffer with any of these diseases when they are vaccines to prevent them.

Unvaccinated kids are a public health risk. If a parent is silly enough to risk "their" own kids health then they should not be allowed to bring them to public places. Schools, pools, rec centers, malls, stores, etc etc. Yes as a parent you have the right to allow you're kid to chance it. You should not have the right to allow you're decisions to risk the lives of other kids.

 

There chance of a child dying from measels , is apparently about
1 in 1,000

the chance of a child dying from autism is much much lower

1 in several million , from memory , and it is not caused by vaccinations.


However , if your one of those susceptible to bullshit nonsense ,

which are the better odds in your lottery with your children's lives ?

 

Only a fool would choose to NOT vaccinate their children.
