I like the idea but it only works for me going forward. Go back and change something and you can't go home again. Then again, there's an idea that things that have happened tend to stay the way they are no matter what you try and do to change them. Only things that haven't happened yet are changeable to any significant degree. You can't go back and off Hitler, but you might have a shot at preventing WWIII.

 

There's a loophole in Einstein's theory of relativity that allows for forward travel. It's really not that complicated and only requires that you find a really good hiding place from entropy for the duration of the trip. Going back is a lot tougher and apparently requires a gravity warping power source the size of a black hole.

 

The trick to it is speed. The faster you can go the slower time relative to you goes. As you near the speed of light it almost stops. Meanwhile time on earth goes on normally. A few days or weeks like that could mean hundreds of years passing on earth. A month to run up to speed and another to slow down and a few hundred years go by back home. That's the easy part. The hard part means navigating through the gravity distortions near a black hole and hitting just the right curve to bring you through them and into the past, then getting back to earth at a time just after you left. Some wit wrote a limeric describing it: There was a young lady named Bright, who could travel much faster than light. She took off one day in that relative way and returned on the previous night!
