Trump has said he is going to stop the violence in Chicago (and other inner cities). So let's see if Trump can do what Emanuel apparently can't.

First off, we would not ever stand a chance against our government. Too much fire power and training. Just because I don't trust my government, does not mean I do not believe in the American way of life. I don't completely trust my employer, I still go to work.

I grew up in a house where the gun cabinet keys were on top of the gun cabinet. I never once thought about taking a gun out and playing with it. I remember I was snooping my parents drawers once and came across my mother's revolver. I did not even think about picking it up because it was loaded. How do I know it was loaded without picking it up? Because I was taught there rules about guns. RULE 1. All guns are loaded. RULE 2. Never play with a loaded gun. RULE 3. Never point a gun at anything, unless I intend on shooting it. Pretty simple rules. I would estimate 90% of all gun accidents would be prevented if these rules would be followed. I had friends that tried to presume me into getting the guns out of the cabinet. My response was, fine for you to say, but my dad won't kill you. He would kill me though. Not literally kill, but make me think for 5 minutes that death would be a relief. Lol Today it would be called child abuse. Back then, it was one of life's tough lessons. Better to be beaten than be dead. Yup that would have been the belt and month of being grounded and picking weeds from the garden. Like I said never once did I think it would be a good idea. Most likely it was a deep rooted fear that prevented me from ever owning a handgun and only having one hunting rifle.

On the note of gun ownership. Many people own guns, but never take the time to learn about gun safety. Much less how to care for a gun. Worse yet, they don't even know how to properly fire a weapon. If 90% of all gun owners learned how to break down there firearm and clean it, then put it back together with their eyes closed. 99% of all accidents would go away. We both agree that idiots with guns is an issue. Our solutions differ, I think. I believe unequivocally, that 99.9% of all problems can be solved through education. Doesn't matter what the problem is, education is the cure. Your statistics verify my beliefs. We have way too many uneducated gun owners. Now I do not believe education should be mandated prior to purcha single a weapon. I do believe a federal CWP should offered. In order to obtain CWP one must pass an intense course not only in proper gun handling, firearm safety, be provided with statistics, such as your, but also score at least a 25 out of 40 on marksmanship. Anyone with a felony or domestic violence guilty verdicts not considered. I further believe that half the cost of the course and permit should be used to set up security systems in local schools preventing gun violence. That is whatever the total cost is, that same amount goes to the school system in which the person lives. This CWP would supercede any state laws. So a person could conceal carry anywhere in the US. No weapons in government buildings, including schools. Pretty much the same as it is in most states. I myself have a CWP in Washington state. I rarely go to Oregon because I cannot legally conceal carry there. I have been wanting to get a Utah CWP. It is good in 32 states. The last few times the course has been offered it has conflicted with my schedule. I can legally drive in all 50 states, but I cannot carry. My old fashioned mind does not understand this. I have a constituting right to bear arms, but I cannot carry in Oregon. I can drive there, which there is no Constitutional Right to drive. It is never ok to to restrict ones rights, because of someone else's faults. I believe we all judged on our own merits, good or bad. I do something wrong, why should anyone else be punished fo my actions? That is never fair. I know life is not fair, but our laws are designed to be. That is what sets the the US apart from the rest of the world. We have a law of the land. This law is the guide for every law in every city, county, and state in the United States. My perfect Utopia would be every man and woman would have easy access to a gun. They would know how to safely handle and fire every firearm they owned. Every child would know my dad's three rules about guns. Everyone would know how to peacefully handle conflict. That is fantasyland. It won't happen. It happens in my house though. So far no one has shot anyone. There are probably 20 or more guns. My adult son and grand-daughter live with me. Grand-daughter is nine and I would suspect she will be a more accurate shooter than my son or myself, by the time she is sixteen. She is scary accurate. She might be hunting deer next year. I will not be afraid for her when she starts dating. I will be afraid for her date. Lol I guarantee no boy will make any unwanted advances.

On a side note. I know it is morbid. I do truly respect all lives. Black white yellow brown red pink purple, it makes no difference. The one positive of these accidental self inflicted accidents is the herd is getting thinned. I think a better way is through education. The negative is when innocent people are killed. I think I read somewhere there were 85 million gun owners in the US. If only 20 gun related accidents happen today. That means there were 84,999,980 people who were not idiots today. We don't read about those because 1, they are not news worthy and two, because they were being responsible gun owners. Media is liberal bias to a certain degree and to promote guns is contradictory to their agenda. Please accept my apologies for being brash. I have strong beliefs in our Constitution. I feel both sides of an issue must be seen and looked at before any good changes can occur. I have seen yours. Page after page after page after page. Your point is made ad nauseum. Too many idiots have access to guns. What can be done about this, that does not take away the rights of the non idiots? As of yesterday, that was 84,999,980 Americans. I do not want to see more lives lost, just so we can eventually get down to zero idiots. Nor do I want a gun ban that infringes on the rights of our citizens. I really believe a bigger push towards encouraging gun education is the most effective way. I wish the NRA would step up to the plate.

I had a much longer response to this and lost it. So I will just point out the paradox for having a gun for self defense. A gun is useless for self defense unless its loaded and you can get your hands on it. So locking guns up defeats the purpose of having a gun for self defense.

I don't think this is the same guy but I watched a guy on TV a few years ago who contended he could fire six shots from a single action revolver faster than someone could fire six shots with a semi-automatic.

Which I sure didn't believe because with a single action you have to cock it on each shot. But to my double amazement the guy fanned that single action with all his fingers and thumb and it was so fast you couldn't even hear the individual shots. And the guy shooting the semi-automatic didn't have a prayer. And I say double amazement because even though he fanned the gun all six shots were on target.

 

Responsible gun owners teach their kid's about guns. My grand daughter is nine. She is not a toddler. When she was, my son had his guns up where they could not be reached. How dare you even insinuate I am not responsible you know nothing about me. When you come down off your high horse, you and me can have an intelligent conversation. We can be a part of a solution to the ignorance of some gun owners. Look at the score. 84,999,980-20. You have a greater chance of dying in a car accident. Don't see you trying to ban cars. Give me a fucking break. You are the one sounding like the idiot. You focus in on the minute minority. That is having a closed mind. You can't see the forest for the trees. Maybe you can't fix stupid but you don't have to be stupid. Never once have I advocated for banning guns. My only point is we need to stop the insane idea that guns are an answer for everything and everyone should own a gun because they cannot be trusted to be safe and responsible with guns.

And once again you don't know who you are talking to. I lived the first half of my life by the gun and the knife and was taught by an old Mountain Man that a gun is worthless unless its loaded and you can get your hands on it. So my kids were raised in a house where there was a loaded gun in nearly every room of the house. And they never touched them because they knew daddy's guns were loaded and I showed them what guns do by taking them out and shooting a jack rabbit at about 50 yards with my 30.06 and making them look at it.

I carried a gun with me everywhere I went. But I changed the day my wife asked me if I knew I had forgotten my pistol in he car; again. And no I did not. Which violated my own rule that if you are going to carry a gun you have to be responsible for knowing where it is at all times.

So I stopped carrying a gun with me and unloaded the guns in the house. And the reality was I never needed that gun in the first half of my life and haven't needed one since.

Well then you can see things from my side of the fence. See then you can totally understand. Seems every gun accident happens with an loaded gun. Well at least that is the story being told. I didnt know the gun was loaded. The magazine was in my hand, how could it still be loaded. I was trained too by a couple old fashioned guys. My dad and uncle. As a young man i was strong fast and wiley. I also have been good with my tongue and diffusing a violent situation. Finding a diplomatic resolution so to speak. I had the strength, speed and wisdom to break up a fight. I once was assaulted by the gf of a man who two minutes before was kicking her as she lay on the sidewalk. I never have liked fighting or violence in any form. To see her being abused i stepped in. A minute later he was unconcious. I never hit him, though in his drunkeness i could have numerous times. As he lunged towards me trying to hit me i dodged. This happened twice. Second time i slipped in behind him and put him to sleep with a hold my Uncle had shown me. As i was laying him down his gf scratched my face. Last time i ever came to tbe aid of anyone getting tbeir ass beat. I can still do that today, but the person would have to stand just right and not fight to get away. I have the wisdom but no strength. The only defense i have left is my tongue. I never have needed to use any of my guns except to practice, but on that note, i have only had to use my car insurance twice. I still carry car insurance. In the past i have gotten out of violent situations with my wits 10 times the number of times i have actually had to use force. Getting close to sixty, my skills are diminishing. Two years ago a 65 year old man in my town was beaten as he was loading groceries in the trunk of his car. Luckily he had a CWP and a gun. He was beaten pretty bad, but not bad enough to finally remove a pocket sized pistol from his coat. I am assuming it was a .380. Saved his life. The assailants tried to leave the scene. One was struck by a car as he fled. The other was found in a nearby parking lot by police. Good Guy with a gun. The old codger survived. Who knows what they would have done. How much ink did that get? 1 inch by 2 inches. 5 years ago a man was shot in the face with a shot gun when some had broken into his house. The victim (the dead man) was a drug addict looking for someone who owed him money. The man living in the house was a renter and just moved in two months prior after seperating from his wife. He called 911 as the beat on his door. They were still on the line when the door was kicked in. The man had a handgun. With his children curled up in a closet, the home owner shot through a wall. The shot went through the wall striking tbe man in the face and killing him. Two minutes later the police arrived. They questioned him did an investigation and concluded shooting was justified. How much ink? Front page news. How much in the exhoneration? None partly because the man declined statement to the paper and did not want his name released. How do i know all this. The man was a groomsman at my sons wedding. I asked him why he did not want the world to know. He said because his name was not released originally no one knew who he was. He told me people might judge him and think he was a murderer. He said it was the hardest thing he has ever done. He told me he was guessing as to about where the man was. His intention was to protect his children. He was sorry the man died, but he is happy his kids are alive. His kids and himself had to go to therapy. He has since sold all his guns. In some ways he is alot like you. In that, he was raised around guns, taught to respect them and that an loaded gun is useless. He gave me parting advice. It reiterated my beliefs. He said be very sure that squeezing the trigger is the last resort. He said at the time he felt it was. He still questions his actions. Once you squeeze, he said there is no turning back. There are no mulligans. It is over. Hearing that resonates strong in my belief system. I pray i never have to squeeze the trigger. More so, i pray i remember his words if i do. I have lived my life with few regrets. That is one regret i do not want to live with. Just like being the driver of a car in which someone gets killed. The i could of done this or done that. I would have a hard time living through that.

 

About the only thing is see worth responding to is the part about people accidentally shooting themselves or others with a loaded gun they thought was unloaded.

And there is a very simple answer for most of these accidents. It is the rise of semi-automatic pistols and especially stupid Glocks where there no external safety except on the trigger. Even gun accidents with law enforcement has rises dramatically since they switched over from revolvers to semi-automatics.
