This article claims that there is a lack of diversity in the tech industry and cites that only 14% of jobs in this industry are held by African Americans. But the black population of the United States is only 13.2% So I don't know what the complaint is among African-Americans . It seems like they are slightly over represented .

 

Define diversity, because diversity doesn't just encompass African Americans. At the IT department where I work, women and Asians/Indians are becoming more and more common. I'd say breaking away from the white male employee is diverse.

I might point out that women make up more than half of the workforce in the United States presently.

Employers are terrified of letting them go or even of disciplining them for fear of retaliatory legal action .

It is popular to say that women make $.75 on every male dollar and that is true if you look at this the aggregate because women are much more likely to be working in minimum-wage jobs .

But that is not what is being said because what is being said is that they make $.75 for every man in the same job .

I don't know how one could even compile the data for such a claim .

Diversity is one of those very squishy terms . It certainly does not mean anything about minorities because women are not a minority .

What it really means is compensatory discrimination against white men because there remains a perception that white men deserve to be discriminated against .

Real wages for men and especially white men have been falling since about 1970.

This incantational cry for justice Will continue until it stops being profitable .

But people will still believe these claims just as they believe that teacher salaries are extremely low in public schools .

The fact is that the average teacher in the United States makes about $55,000 a year which is above the median income and the only reason I bring this up is to point out that perception is reality . Also I think that because most teachers are women there is a perception that this is one more area where they are getting screwed .

The national education Association and people who make those claims about women being discriminated in the workforce have done an excellent job of spinning the statistics and truth of the matter.

Some things are just too sensitive to touch or investigate beyond the emotional headlines .

And that's a shame because there is a greater truth out there .

 

And just what are Williams' qualifications for this position? She's a tennis player. Does she have a masters in business or information technology? Secondly, and I'm sorry to say, that most IT jobs are going to men (and some women) from India, who are brought to the U.S. on a work visa. I am not bashing Indians. They are in my experience, better educated and work cheaper and longer than traditional American workers. The company that I work for is about 80% Indian. The majority of them are here on a work visa which the company pays for. If blacks, feel so discriminated against, them let them try to get an equivalent education as their competition out there.

Asian-Americans make up half of the Bay Area’s technology workforce, and their double-digit employment gains came from jobs lost among white tech workers, according to an analysis by this newspaper of Census Bureau data released Thursday.

The dramatic shift in the changing composition of the high-tech workforce represents a new generation of homegrown and imported workers drilled in science, technology, engineering and math studies. But the shift in workplace demographics — at least among tech companies — fails to reflect the gains of California’s Hispanic and Latino population, which lost ground in tech jobs along with African-Americans...

The percentage of Asian tech workers grew from 39 percent in 2000 to just more than 50 percent in 2010 in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties combined, according to Census Bureau statistics.

At the same time, white workers saw their more than 50 percent majority of tech jobs in 2000 fall to nearly 41 percent, according to the numbers released Thursday.

African-American and Hispanic tech workers each saw slight decreases: Positions held by African-American tech workers fell from 2.8 percent to 2.3 percent; those held by Hispanic workers dropped from 4.6 percent to 4.2 percent.

Those complaining about a lack of diversity in high pay, high prestige fields assume that the races and the sexes are intrinsically equal, and that the differences are due to irrational discrimination. This is obviously not true.

An additional factor leading to pay imbalances between men and women is that women prefer successful men, but men do not prefer successful women. This gives men a powerful incentive to succeed that women do not have.

 

People try to make something hard that is really very simple.
If you want a job do the work needed to become qualified for that job.
See how simple that is? Yelling racist and taking them to court is just an indication of your failure to get the education needed.

 

Before he was disgraced, Bill Cosby tried to tell the black community to get an education, but it fell on deaf ears.

 

And now Cosby has been reduced to using the same excuse those same blacks always use.

But how can one possibly be bothered with the facts when there is even the slightest possibility that there could be racism ?

 

If one is looking for the definition of what African-American or Asian American or white American means then one has to look at how affirmative-action is defined by the US government .

Or one can look at people on the street and ask them if the person they're looking at is black or Asian or white .

A good way to tell the difference between a Negro neighborhood and a white neighborhood is to take a walk through a neighborhood beginning at midnight, and lasting for about two hours. There are smart black people. Every race of people have smart people.
It isn't important how smart one person is, it is important what the % of smart people belong to a race.

The fact is that African-Americans are not under represented in the tech industry .

Even the article itself says that the tech industry is 14% African-American .

The African-American population of the United States is 13.2% .

If we are going to start giving jobs away on a quota system then I would call that a success story .

Women make up only 27% so I guess there's a shortfall there but one has to keep in mind that there's a good possibility that women are not especially interested in the tech field.

But women make up more than 50% of the workforce right now. In places like law School The student population is significantly more than 50% .

And the last I heard, medical school is now majority minority .

It strikes me that the best way to deal with the job inequality is to present gender-neutral resumes and work off an entirely merit based system .

Either that or just have plain old quotas regardless of merit but I don't see how that would serve society in anyway .
