US car-hailing company Uber has joined the race for driverless car technology, confirming it is testing a vehicle on the streets of Pittsburgh.

The company said in a statement it had outfitted a Ford Fusion with radar, laser scanners and cameras.

Uber's project is being carried out in partnership with Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University.

More and more car and technology firms are partnering up to develop self-driving vehicles.

Aside from pioneer Google, companies like Tesla are also developing the technology, while Chinese car and tech firms have also made significant progress.

Analysis: Dave Lee, BBC North America Technology Reporter

Uber's ultimate goal is a complete end to car ownership - and it's wasting no time.

It wants you to be able to summon a car, have it arrive in less than five minutes, and take you where you want to go.

In major cities it has just about hit that goal. The average time for being picked up by an Uber is less than five minutes. This week, the company began a scheme that gave all residents in a small San Francisco community $100 (£68.50) every month to spend on Uber.

But Uber's big inconvenience is the fact it needs drivers, and so this line of research is about eliminating that final piece of the puzzle to boost profits even more.

Uber isn't alone - rival ride-sharing service Lyft announced a tie-up with Chevrolet to use autonomous driving as well, but it's Uber that seems unstoppable in its goal to be the dominant force in global ground travel.

Uber said in its statement that real-world testing was "critical to our efforts to develop self-driving technology", and explained a trained driver was still monitoring operations in the car at all times.

The company has also recently joined a coalition with Google and several car makers to help steer the regulations needed to make self-drive cars a reality.

Together with Ford, Volvo and Lyft, they aim to lobby lawmakers and regulators on some of the legal barriers that would need to be changed before driverless cars could hit the roads.

What I foresee in the future are calls by the - - - - - - - -, to outlaw human operation of any motor vehicles on public roadways. No high powered well handling sports cars, no classic cars, no motorcycles, no more fun vehicles. All in the name of public safety of course. We all know the day will come.

So what happens if your cars computer freezes up while going around a curve at 65 mph on a mountain road? :nailbiting: just curious...

Anyway, I'd rather be in a driverless car than with a brainless driver..

The driverless future is going to happen, and its depressing. If you've ever come across one of the moving roadblocks called the Google self driving car, you'll know how depressing that is. They infest the streets around here.

Funny thing is ... I used to see driverless cars in movies and thought "that will be so cool when we get that advanced". Wow, just be careful what you wish for I guess is the lesson there ...

Daimler’s Driverless 18-Wheelers Approved to Cruise Nevada’s Highways

just okayed Daimler’s futuristic Freightliner Inspiration driverless trucks for the highway. But truck drivers need not fear for their jobs—these trucks won’t replace any humans just yet. They're here to help.

Think of it as autopilot for long-distance truckers.

    The truck uses cameras, sensor

I am about a hour from Pittsburgh i should go check it out. The technology is there to make it work I just worry about the drivers around the GPS driven car. I know some of the GPS technology that companies like google are using are amazing and most of it open source code wrote by Eric.S.Raymond I say bring it on.

I would hope that a vehicle transporter of dangerous goods being driven with autonomous capability would not be hack-able..

Nope! I've ridden with a few Uber drivers, and their GPS suck! It takes them out of the way, sometimes am extra 10 minutes. The robo- drivers will taken am extra 15 because you can't talk to them and tell them the GPS is fucked!

Surge pricing? Sorry Uber, but go fuck yourself. Once the insurance companies weigh in on driverless cars it will become nothing more than a pipe dream.

Once the insurance companies see the accident statistics for driverless cars, it'll be almost impossible to get insurance to drive yourself. It's the insurance companies who are going to cause the switch to driverless.

Hmm you may have something. Either way it will cause insurance companies money. Say that since there is no driver error there are no longer accidents, the need for vehicle insurance will cease. In most states keeping your vehicle insured is a requirement by LAW. It took states quite a while to get those laws passed. With perfectly safe vehicles the people will demand the option not to carry insurance.
Now if driver less vehicles cause more fender benders and what not, it may end up dipping into their profits, hardly seems likely though. They would just raise the rates. However you never know.
