I'd like to see Jamie Raskin v Liz Cheny in the next election. Not an easy choice... a true conservative Republican and a true constitutionalist Democrat.

 

WHAT THE FUCK... there isn't such a creature as a constitutionalist Democrat.....and for the true conservative Republican...well, they're on the brink of extinction category.

 

I'd define such a creature who DOES infer and extrapolate analogies from the implications of the text, despite the historical circumstances of it's origins. Such techniques would (IMNHO) take account for the things the signers didn't and couldn't imagine for the future.

That gets back to having a court that is expanded to be representatively proportional to the population of the states.

As an addition to your allusion to the 'Pig-in-a-polk' of whoever is chosen as the tribune for one's intents and aspirations, this footnote perspective on Eisenhower's entire military and political career, I would, IMNHO, add.
I perceive Eisenhower as the amiable and competent 'boy's club' member around whom others wouldn't and didn't have objections. He was the diplomatically balancing politician for keeping the status quo going as it was.

I'm not schooled enough from my early 50's perspective to know who else, but Nixon he could have chosen as his Veep that would have prevented JFK's election and swing to the center (that had sympathies to rising to what were formerly seen as Leftist trends among Minorities and the self-important and overly-entitled younger generation for more of an individualist ideology [still to the RIGHT and in another "Temple" to my minimalist, transactionalisms!].

Axios reported Sunday that a focus group of swing voters by Engagious/Schlesinger is ready for former President Donald Trump to be prosecuted for the Jan. 6 attack on Congress and attempt to overthrow the 2020 election.

Polls have consistently shown an increase in the blame for the former president as the House Select Committee continues to host public hearings presenting the evidence they've uncovered. But a focus group can take a deeper dive into Americans' attitudes, particularly of swing voters in swing states.

The Wisconsin swing voters match the same opinion as Arizona swing voters who were interviewed last month.

"Engagious/Schlesinger conducted two online focus groups on Tuesday with 14 Wisconsinites who voted for Trump in 2016, then Joe Biden in 2020," said Axios. "They included 12 independents, one Democrat and one Republican... Eight participants said they've watched at least part of the Jan. 6 hearings so far. Several said the hearings were helpful for "accountability" but that the committee already has 'their proof' of what happened that day."

It's a problem for Donald Trump, but more for Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who is up for reelection in November. Johnson was asked by someone to hand over a list of fake electors to Vice President Mike Pence. That list has now come under investigation by the Department of Justice as potential fraud.

Signers to the slate of fake electors have been subpoenaed in recent weeks as the DOJ seeks information on who in Donald Trump's campaign was behind the scheme.

While many of those in the group didn't know much about Johnson, those who did weren't happy. One voter called him a "puppet for Trump."

"Those who thought Trump should face criminal prosecution didn't relent even when the moderator pushed back and said doing so would be unprecedented, potentially putting future presidents at risk of being prosecuted for political reasons," Axios said of the focus group report. "Voters were adamant that such a move would help deter similar attempts by anyone else in the future to 'overthrow the government.'"

One woman said that no president should have provoked what happened on Jan. 6.

"Many people were injured. Look at how many lives you put at stake because you were allowing this to happen. And he was happy about it," said Samantha O.

Another person in the focus group, 59-year-old Andrew R. said, "We have to show other people that this just can't be done in the future. [Prosecution] is going to be the price to pay if you try to do a coup again — and that's exactly what it was, a coup."

There were others in the group who compared Jan. 6 to something happening in "third-world countries." One called it "too extreme," and they feared it would happen again if something wasn't done to prevent it. "It just opens a floodgate for what anybody else is allowed to do."

Rich Thau, president of Engagious, was the one who created the focus group, explained that after leading chants of "lock her up," it's Trump they want to see locked up.

Those in the focus group also indicated that federal gun legislation was among their top three issues, despite a soft law being passed. They didn't identify abortion as a top issue, however.

On Monday, writing for The Arizona Republic, columnist Laurie Roberts detailed the friction in the Republican Party as former Vice President Mike Pence travels to Arizona to campaign on behalf of Karrin Taylor Robson against Kari Lake, the candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

The news of Pence's trip was first broken earlier in the day in The Washington Post. And, noted Roberts, Pence is joined by incumbent Arizona Governor Doug Ducey.

"On Sunday, Ducey took to the CNN’s State of the Union to savage Lake as a charlatan who is staking out Ultra MAGA positions that run counter to her decades of past actions and statements," wrote Roberts. "'This is all an act,' Ducey told CNN’s Dana Bash. 'She’s been putting on a show for some time now and we’ll see if the voters of Arizona buy it.' Ducey wasn’t done. 'Kari Lake is misleading voters with no evidence,' he said, of her insistence that the 2020 election was stolen. 'She’s been tagged by her opponents with the nickname, Fake Lake, which seems to be sticking and actually doing some damage.'"

According to the report, Trump and his allies are already trying to fight back — and it's getting ugly.

"Team Trump was left to stamp its foot and reach for the 2020 playbook, implying that skullduggery is afoot," wrote Roberts. "'We are receiving reports that ballots have been destroyed or stolen from mailboxes,' the Arizona Republican Party tweeted on Sunday. Translation: If Lake loses, it’ll be because the election was stolen."

This comes as Trump's influence has boosted a number of controversial candidates around the country. His Senate endorsements alone include celebrity TV doctor Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, and former football star Herschel Walker in Georgia.

GOP lawmaker calls on party to pick alternative to Trump after he 'lost his mind' in 2020

A Republican congressman who was once endorsed by former President Donald Trump now believes it's time for the party to move on from him on the grounds that the twice-impeached former president "lost his mind" in 2020.

In an interview with the Buffalo News, outgoing Rep. Chris Jacobs (R-NY), who decided to suspend his reelection campaign this year after he came out in support of a federal assault weapons ban, explained why he believes the GOP needs to look elsewhere for a presidential nominee in 2024.

"I think it would be best for the party if we embrace the new generation of leadership," he said. "I just think we have a great bench of up-and-coming leaders, and I think that it would just be best if we did that."

While he did not deliver any specific endorsements, Jacobs did acknowledge that he had soured on Trump after his reaction to losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.

"I just think his judgment from Election Day to January 6 was – I just think he lost his mind," Jacobs said. "I really do. I just do."

As the Buffalo News notes, this is a sharp departure from how he felt two years ago, when he said he was "deeply honored and humbled to receive President Trump’s endorsement" and stood "ready to join him in the fight against socialism and to help him enact his America First Agenda."

DOJ: Trump isn't immune from prosecution — even if he runs again

On Tuesday, Rolling Stone reported that Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco is clarifying former President Donald Trump is not immune from prosecution due to his political status — even if he launches another bid for president.

"'We’re going to continue to do our job, to follow the facts wherever they go, no matter where they lead, no matter to what level,' said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, according to a Bloomberg report," noted Nikki McCann Ramirez. "'We’re going to continue to investigate what was fundamentally an attack on our democracy.'"

"Rolling Stone reported Sunday that Trump has been telling associates that his desire to be president again stems in part from a desire to thwart criminal investigations against him," continued the report. "'He says when [not if] he is president again, a new Republican administration will put a stop to the [Justice Department] investigation that he views as the Biden administration working to hit him with criminal charges — or even put him and his people in prison,' a source with knowledge of the situation said."

Monaco's statement directly disputes this claim — however, it remains unclear whether Trump will actually be charged with anything.

A memo by Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed last night on MSNBC indicated that any potential charges against a politician should be cleared at the highest levels first — a relatively standard practice to prevent politically motivated prosecutions, but also one that leaves Garland with a large amount of discretionary power to decide whether or not a prosecution of Trump would preserve the agency's political neutrality.

"Investigating a presidential candidate has vexed federal law enforcement before, as agencies have tried to walk a line between upholding the law and avoiding the influence of political interference. During the 2016 election, the FBI and Justice Department took pains to keep quiet about the extent of their investigation into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russian operatives," noted the report. "But with regard to the Jan. 6 investigation, Monaco said, the department would not let a potential Trump candidacy deter them from investigating the insurrection to the fullest. 'The mandate the team has remains, which is to follow the facts wherever they go, regardless of what level, regardless of whether the subject of those investigations were present on Jan. 6,' she said."

Top podcaster Joe Rogan escalated his feud with former President Donald Trump, calling him "an existential threat to democracy" and a "man-baby" on drugs in a recent episode of the "Joe Rogan Experience."

Rogan, one of the most influential podcast hosts in the US, recently said that he would never have Trump on his show. "I don't want to help him," he said. "I'm not interested in helping him."


Rogan has also praised Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a possible 2024 Republican presidential contender and Trump rival.

In an episode of the "Joe Rogan Experience" that aired Thursday, Rogan and guest Tom Segura discussed Trump's energy levels and recovery from COVID-19 in October of 2020 after receiving monoclonal antibody treatment — and speculated about his use of Adderall.

"You gotta remember, Trump is fat and old. And four days after he was like, campaigning and waving to people here for days, that's pretty impressive," Rogan said. "That's when I lost all my fear of the disease, I was like, I just need to get what that guy got...he thinks of his body like a battery, and he thinks when you exercise, you lose energy."

"One thing that is incredible about that guy, even when you watch him as president was that he was full of fucking energy, full of it, every day, and they say slept like four hours a night," Segura said.

"He's on Adderall!" Rogan said. "Do you think he's on Adderall?"

Segura then claimed that Trump was "gassed up" for shoots on "The Apprentice" because he had trouble reading.

"He gets very bored. He would get bored at the CIA briefing in the mornings...they would have to make it more engaging for him," Segura said.

The New York Times and Washington Post have reported that Trump did not read his Presidential Daily Briefings and preferred looking at visuals and graphs. Segura also referenced how Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner was known to "sandwich" bad news between good news for Trump.

"He's a man baby," Rogan said, laughing.

"He's a fucking toddler. He's a toddler, that's exactly how I talk to my kids about shit," Segura said.

Earlier in the show, Rogan and Segura mocked Trump for his history of repeatedly clashing with Forbes over his placement on the 400 wealthiest Americans list, and for posing as a publicist, "John Barron," in his efforts to convince Forbes of his wealth throughout the 1980s.

"There's almost a part of you that goes, 'It's always hilarious when someone doesn't give a fuck that much,'" Segura said.

"If he weren't an existential threat to democracy and the power that he wields over his minions wasn't just so disturbing, it'd be hilarious. If he wasn't in line for president, if he was just a baller...remember when he was in those videos, those rap songs? They were always referencing Trump, he was the man," Rogan said.

Trump is illegally running for president undeclared — and the nation's top election agency is letting it happen: lawsuit

On Wednesday, The Daily Beast reported that a Democratic super PAC has sued the Federal Election Commission, alleging that former President Donald Trump is unlawfully running a 2024 presidential campaign without actually having declared it and subjecting himself to the reporting requirements — and the FEC is letting it happen.

"The group, American Bridge, filed a lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission over those allegations, demanding that the campaign finance watchdog address Trump’s actions and the 'competitive edge' they might give him," reported Alice Tecotzky. "As The New York Times reported, the FEC hasn’t made Trump register a campaign committee, and American Bridge claims that he is therefore 'disguis[ing] his run for the presidency.' The camouflaged candidate has thus left voters 'in the dark about the contributions and expenditures he has received,' thereby giving him a fundraising advantage."

Elections experts have sounded the alarm about the former president's refusal to formally announce his candidacy, with attorney Chris Truax arguing in The Bulwark that the arrangement violates the Federal Election Campaign Act.

"The PAC filed a complaint against Trump with the FEC in March, and says that if the commission fails to act within 30 days, it should face repercussions along with the former president," the report noted.

Previous reports have suggested that Trump has been seriously tempted to announce his candidacy right now, to try to suck the oxygen out of media focus on the January 6 hearings in Congress.

But announcing now would come with serious risks for Republicans. According to former Republican strategist Tara Satmeyer, a Trump announcement ahead of the 2022 midterms could force tons of GOP candidates to spend the entire cycle clarifying their relationship with and stance on the former president, rather than focus on economic issues and other things voters are worried about.

Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Monday morning, longtime Republican pollster Frank Luntz warned the Republican Party leadership that they need to do something to stop former President Donald Trump from announcing his plan to run again in 2024 if they have any hope of winning both chambers on Congress in November.

Speaking with fill-in host Jonathan Lemire, Luntz also said he had some bad news for the former president based on recent polling and focus groups.

"We are starting to see Trump drop below the critical 50 percent mark in terms of who Republicans want to see as their nominee in 2024, and the constant, consistent rise of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis," he told the MSNBC host.

"What matters is New Hampshire, South Carolina, Iowa for the Republicans," he elaborated. "Ron DeSantis is rising in all the early states significantly, and there is even a survey that now has him ahead of Donald Trump in New Hampshire. Clearly, Republicans still see Trump as their most important political figure. His endorsement still matters as we saw in the Maryland governor's race, but when they're looking forward rather than looking back, more and more Republicans are saying, 'Enough. I don't want to focus on the past, I want to focus on the future. I don't want to focus on Donald Trump and an election that is now two years old."

"This is causing a significant problem for Trump," he continued. "I think it's the reason why he is more likely than not to announce in 2022 rather than wait until 2023."

Before host Lemire cut away to another guest, Luntz insisted on making a "final point."

"If he [Trump] does announce, he could actually cost the Republicans the House as well as the Senate," he bluntly stated. "If the election is about the economy, Republicans win both. If the election is about Donald Trump, Republicans lose both."

Former President Donald Trump said during a speech on Saturday that "Americans kneel to God" alone, as the concept of Christian nationalism continues to gain traction among conservatives.

Trump made the comment while speaking at an event in Tampa, Florida, held by Turning Point USA, a student conservative group, and posted a clip of it on his Truth Social account.


"We will not break, we will not yield, we will never give in, we will never give up, we will never, ever, ever back down. As long as we are confident and united, the tyrants we are fighting do not stand a chance," Trump said. "Because we are Americans and Americans kneel to God, and God alone."




Trump's office did not respond to Insider's request for comment, but the remark comes as Christian nationalism and some of its ideologies have spread among the GOP. Recent reports from The New York Times, The New Yorker, and CNN all suggest Christian nationalism is on the rise, particularly among the far right.

According to Christianity Today, Christian nationalism is "the belief that the American nation is defined by Christianity, and that the government should take active steps to keep it that way." Christian nationalists believe the US is and should remain a "Christian nation."

They also believe in freedom of religion, but that Christianity should have a "privileged position in the public square," the outlet reported.

A CNN report published Sunday asserts an even darker side to the ideology, claiming Christian nationalists use theology to justify sexism and racism as a means to attain an ideal White Christian America. The report said such ideas were becoming increasingly common in churches around the nation.

After Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, carried crosses or invoked theology to justify their actions, some argued the insurrection also represented a "Christian revolt."

The concept and some of its ideologies have been touted recently by Republican lawmakers.

GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who also attended the Turning Point USA event, identified herself as a Christian nationalist in an interview this weekend while explaining that Republicans need to represent their voters instead of lobbyists or big donors.

"We need to be the party of nationalism, and I'm a Christian and I say it proudly, we should be Christian nationalists," Greene said, adding that when the GOP learns to represent their voters, the party will grow.

Greene's office did not immediately respond to Insider's questions about how she personally defines the concept.

Others have been more explicit: GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, also a Christian and attendee at the event in Florida this weekend, said recently the church should be in charge of the government.

"The church is supposed to direct the government, the government is not supposed to direct the church," she said last month. "That is not how our founding fathers intended it. And I'm tired of this separation of church and state junk that's not in the Constitution."

However, some Republicans have pushed back on such concepts, including Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, also a Christian, who blasted Boebert's remarks and compared them to the Taliban, an Islamic militant group.

Days after publishing a searing op-ed declaring that former President Donald Trump “utterly failed” on Jan. 6, the Wall Street Journal editorial page is ramping up its attacks on the ex-commander in chief — with one of its most prominent columnists asking some hard questions about Trump’s massive campaign war chest.

In a column titled “Where Do Trump’s Donations Go?” famed GOP strategist Karl Rove called out the former president for using very little of the $121 million, he has raised to help Republicans in the midterm elections.


Rove wrote:

“In a 24-hour stretch this week, I received 25 fundraising pleas from Trump World beseeching me to help save America from the Democrats. In exchange for donations, I was offered a blue “Official 2022 Trump Card,” then a gold one, “Limited Edition Trump Wine Glasses” (I don’t drink), an “EXCLUSIVE Trump Rally Shirt,” and a slot on the “Official 2022 Trump Donor Wall.” Alongside gifts, the emails offered flattery: I was called a “Trump MVP,” one of the former president’s “Most Loyal Supporters,” an “America First Trump Patriot” and “Patriot of the Month.” I even got an invitation to join the “American Defense Task Force.”

These requests have apparently produced a flood of contributions that donors think will help defeat Democrats. But it isn’t clear that much of Mr. Trump’s lucre is going to help in the midterms.”

Rove explained that legally, Trump cannot use the money on a future presidential campaign at this time, and that if he declares his 2024 candidacy before the midterms, he must — by law — create a new committee for his presidential campaign. He then called out Trump for having spent a few hundred thousand dollars to help out Republican candidates who are very much in need.


“If Mr. Trump doesn’t start actually deploying these funds to help candidates he’s backed for Congress, governor and other statewide offices, donors might not keep giving to the former president’s causes,” Rove wrote. “Trump-endorsed candidates might start to wonder how strong an ally the former president really is, beyond lending his name in a primary.”


Rove’s op-ed marks the latest salvo against the former president from a Rupert Murdoch-owned outlet. There has been a noted shift in coverage of Trump in several of the outlets owned by the Australian media magnate in recent days. In addition to the prior Wall Street Journal editorial condemning Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, the New York Post, last week declared Trump “unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again. And Fox News recently posted a video featuring Trump voters switching their allegiance to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). They also gave 15 minutes of live coverage to a speech given by former Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday in Washington while completely ignoring Trump’s DC address on the very same day.

Paul Manafort covertly advised Trump in 2020 -- and kept it secret in the hopes he'd get pardoned

Paul Manafort, the scandal-plagued convicted felon who spent several months running Donald Trump's first presidential campaign in 2016, has written a new memoir in which he claims he informally advised Trump's campaign.

However, Manafort says he made sure to keep it a secret because revelations about his role in the campaign would surely cause a scandal and potentially jeopardize his chances of being pardoned if Trump lost in 2020.

"I didn’t want anything to get in the way of the president’s re-election or, importantly, a potential pardon," Manafort writes, according to a report by The Guardian, which has obtained a copy of the book. "When the re-election campaign started kicking off, I was interacting, unofficially, with friends of mine who were very involved. It was killing me not to be there, but I was advising indirectly from my condo."

In another passage, Manafort again emphasizes the need to secrecy in order to secure his pardon.

“I still had no promise of a pardon, but I had an expectation," he writes. "My fear was that if I got in the way of the campaign and Trump lost, he might blame me, and I did not want that to happen.”

Manafort was convicted in 2018 of a wide variety of crimes, including filing false tax returns, bank fraud, and failing to disclose a foreign bank account.

According to special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference with the 2020 election, Manafort attended a meeting with a Russian operative who promised the Trump campaign dirt on then-rival Hillary Clinton, and also leaked internal campaign polling data to a Kremlin-connected oligarch.

Manafort was freed early from prison after receiving a pardon for former President Donald Trump in December 2020.
