Trump 'freaked out' by more than just the collapse of rally crowd size: Morning Joe

While discussing the problems Donald Trump is having attracting fans to attend his campaign rallies, "Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough pointed out an even bigger problem for the embattled former president

During the Thursday morning segment about Trump's "cash crunch," contributor Sam Stein claimed he was struck by the lack of enthusiasm for Trump compared to his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.

That, in turn, led Scarborough to point out that Trump's small donor base is crashing which has the former president "freaking out."

"You can tell this not as enthusiastic a run as four years ago or eight years ago. You guys remember the arena in Manchester, right? 2016 — it was sold out, right? The entire thing." Stein recalled. "I went again this cycle. They had a huge curtain to cut off about a quarter of the arena, and they didn't have the top sections [open] no one was allowed to sit there. I thought to myself, you know, the enthusiasm is not quite the same, and I think that hurts Trump on the donor level, too because he has been so reliant on small dollar donations in a way that other Republicans can't."

Scarborough jumped in and said that "I'll tell you what freaks Trump out even more is the fact that his small donors, which is absolutely critical in campaigns, small donors have dropped by 200,000 people! 200,000 donors from this part of the campaign to four years ago."

"That is a staggering number cited from the 'Financial Times,' out with a report," co-host Wille Geist interjected. "In the second half of 2019, Donald Trump had 740,000 donors. In the second half of 2023 — so four years later, ahead of an election year — he had 516,000 donors."

I have two granddaughters and both of them are Swifties. And the more I joked about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce during the season the more the 16 year old granddaughter tried to insist I watch Miss Americana. Which wasn't working until the 6 year old, who has always been a bit of a bully joined forces with her and just before the super Bowl they finally bullied me into it.

And when I finally did I couldn't remember the last time something came along that made this Democrat more hopeful. First both of them were right. I was grossly underestimating Swift's talent as a singer and songwriter. But worse I had no idea how intelligent Swift is and how savvy and insightful her politics are. Incredibly knowledgeable about the issues and can boil it down to a very simple formula. You can't believe a fucking word of what Republicans say, You have to watch what they do and actively oppose it. Nothing could give me more hope than Swift cranking that out to her 282 million followers and especially the young women and girls.

Cue the conspiracy theorists — Taylor Swift has issued a political message on this Super Tuesday.

The highly influential, Grammy-winning musician posted the message to her Instagram Stories that urged her legions of fans to vote in their states’ primary elections. Her call to action: “[V]ote the people who most represent YOU into power.”

Even without endorsing a specific candidate — Vote.org is a nonpartisan site — Swift’s sway when it comes to politics is palpable. Last fall on Voter Registration Day, another Instagram post by Swift urging her fans to get registered resulted in more than 30,000 new voters in just one day, enough to swing a local election one way or another. For example, USA Today reported that “the state where Swift had the biggest single-day impact was Texas, with about 2,700 new registrations, and 4,562 over the following 10 days. Overall, Texas has about 17.7 million registered voters.”


A poll published by Newsweek in January also found that 18 percent of voters would be “more likely” or “significantly more likely” to back a Swift-endorsed candidate. That might not be a majority, but it could be enough to tip one candidate over the edge.

Up until 2018, Swift generally remained politically neutral to her massive fan following. But during that year’s midterm elections, Swift publicly endorsed Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee and denounced Republican incumbent Sen. Marsha Blackburn (who won anyway), saying at the time: “Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me.”


In 2020, Swift famously threw her support behind President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Swift has not endorsed anyone yet in 2024, despite the right-wing conspiracy theory that she was going to endorse Biden as part of a government psy-op during the Super Bowl this year. The Biden administration is, however, still courting her for an official endorsement. (Though if you ask Biden about that, he’ll tell you “that’s classified.”)
