Warren plan would criminalize election-related online disinformation

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., released another plan Wednesday ahead of next week's Iowa caucuses — and this one could land those sharing false information online behind bars.

Warren plans to crack down on "digital disinformation" by working with social media companies to address false posts, having them label certain content, ban accounts trying to interfere with elections and alert users who have interacted with content determined to be disinformation, among other things. She would also lead a charge to criminalize the mere spreading of false information about the process of voting in U.S. elections.

"I will push for new laws that impose tough civil and criminal penalties for knowingly disseminating this kind of information, which has the explicit purpose of undermining the basic right to vote," she says on her campaign website. Warren's plan says this criminally punishable false information would be "about when and how to vote" in election
Warren cites social media efforts in the two most recent federal elections that told people the wrong election date or that voting by text was allowed in that year's election.
Warren's plan would also bring back the cybersecurity coordinator at the National Security Council and establish federal information sharing rules to protect privacy.
Some online took the chance to poke fun at Warren's past.
"Would this apply to the tall tales you tell and those networks allow ewarren?" Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., asked on Twitter. This comment was likely a thinly veiled reference to the controversy about Warren's claimed Native-American heritage, including a DNA test she released in 2018 which later prompted an apology to Cherokee Nation.
The National Review's Jeff Blehar dropped the veil entirely, writing, "Elizabeth Warren is an American Indian. Go ahead Liz, charge me."
Warren, of course, is not planning to criminalize all disinformation, but simply disinformation related to the physical process of casting votes. But even banning that level of speech could cause her to run into First Amendment issues, according to the Washington Examiner's Brad Polumbo.

"In other words, Warren wants to criminalize the spread of information the government deems to be false," he wrote Wednesday. "This unconstitutional proposal not only flies in the face of the First Amendment and core constitutional principles of free expression, but it’s also ripe for abuse."

Polumbo went on to say the banning of some election-related disinformation could lead to a slippery slope.

"Once we open this door, government censorship will inevitably creep beyond just saying elections are on the wrong day or that the would-be censors in power will stretch the definition of 'election disinformation' to include political predictions and commentary they dislike," he wrote. "Like it or not, a consequence of free and open debate is that people will have the right to say untrue or misleading things."

Warren, however, is concerned with another important American right — the right to vote.
"Voter suppression efforts of any kind offend basic American values," she says on her campaign website.
"The stakes of this election are too high — and we need to fight the spread of false information that disempowers voters and undermines democracy," Warren says.

Formal Complaint “On Commission Of A Criminal Offense” Filed Against Joe Biden

Former Ukraine prosecutor Viktor Shokin filed a complaint alleging criminal offenses against former Vice President and current presidential candidate Joe “Stop and smell the children’s hair” Biden.

The report comes by way of Interfax:

Ukrainian ex-Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin has demanded that the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) open criminal proceedings against former U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden for illegal influence on him as the prosecutor general of Ukraine.

“I ask you to register a criminal offense against me in the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations by a U.S. citizen, Joseph Biden, which happened on the territory of Ukraine and abroad, namely, interference with the activities of a law enforcement officer, the responsibility for which is provided for in Part 2 of Article 343 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code. Immediately start a pretrial investigation and give written instructions to SBI investigators,” Shokin said in a statement to the acting SBI director delivered by Shokin’s lawyers.


Shokin said he agreed to resign as prosecutor general of Ukraine due to Biden pressure.


“During the last months of 2015 and the first of 2016, Joseph Biden, using his official position, personally paid official visits to Ukraine several times with the aim of holding negotiations with the state leaders on my removal from my post. As a result, he curtailed an objective investigation criminal proceedings on the facts of unlawful activities of persons associated with the company Burisma Holdings Limited (Cyprus), including the son of the specified high-ranking official,” Shokin said.

Shokin said Biden demanded that he be fired in exchange for the unhindered provision of Ukraine with a U.S. state guarantee in the amount of $1 billion.

Shokin said Biden’s actions can be considered as pressure according to the scientific and legal conclusion of the International Law Association of April 18, 2017, provided by Doctor of Law, Professor [Oleksandr] Merezhko, currently Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

I was hoping that it was something not already 'baked in the cake' for folks born before 1967. For PreMillenials and Millenials, it could be an FYI of interests.. An economy running slower than under President Obama who actually cut the budget deficit in half. We, right now are getting ripped off and the children and grandchildren conservatives used to always scream their heads off about are getting saddled with more debt than our country can pay off.

So if Trump thinks he can run on the economy I am all for it. Because just like his impeachment the truth is going to come out.
