I'm not sure there is anything wrong in being proud of your country- I personally wish the British Soccer team were prouder playing for their country - the bastards don't even sing our anthem before each game!

I wouldn't sing the anthem either, but it wouldn't make me any less proud to be in the team. God save the Queen? Why? What's she ever done for me? let her look after herself like the rest of us have to!

Nor does the behaviour of a certain Mr T Bliar make me less proud. I can see how his actions are viewed by the people of this country and it's the people that make Britain worthy of my pride.

I guess the same is true of America, too.

Verse 6 was a reaction to Sir John Cope's defeat by the Jacobites at the Battle of Prestonpans with a prayer for the success of Wade's army then assembling at Newcastle.
The Jacobite forces bypassed his force and reached Derby, but then retreated and when their garrison at Carlisle surrendered to a second government army led by King George's son the Duke of Cumberland another verse was added, according to Fitzroy Maclean:[5] The verse he quotes appears to have a line missing.

Another verse added during the 1745 Rising and sung at theatres, went as follows:[4][5]

I'm pointing out that pride in your country is not the same thing as pride in your country's leaders or actions. I am very proud of my nation, but not always proud of it's actions. I point these out not to belittle my country but to allow it to see a truth and improve itself.

And I can't help but think what would happen if you guys had a queen who was a real bitch but you still had to sing that song at every football game.

But, hey, I'm American. I date a lot of Brits but what do I know? In America, however, we somehow manage to separate pride in our country from pride in our leaders. Besides...Bush isn't so much of a leader as he is the half-wit nephew who somehow (through a series of mistakes and pity) manages to become VP of a large company.

My only wish (and I'm a black woman so no one jump down my throat thinking I'm some chauvanistic (sp?) man) is that the Democrats do throw away next year's election on a black or female candidate. We can't take another 4 years of idiot republican conservative fundimentalists. This country will suffocate (or just fall into a depression)!

Then again, that's just my opinion
