Yes, but the taxpayers would have gotten the bill for a million more people unemployed if the auto industry failed and the subsequent cost of losing such a major industry in the US. It would have been great if they could have gotten private funding, but at the time NO ONE was getting private funding. Let's not forget, Bush approved the first bailout funds at the end of 2008. Had Obama decided to not continue on that path, he probably would have been criticized for that decision as well.

There's still hope for the indestructable Twinkie. Once they liquidate, there will probably be buyers.

The company has been looking for a buyer for about two years, without anyone showing any interest. Nobody wanted the union labor and unsustainable union contracts that went along with it. But now that they're going to liquidate, buyers can buy the Twinkie brand without the dead weight of the union contracts tied to it.

This should make the union workers happy. They keep saying how terrible that Hostess management is. Now they can find a job working for a company with good management. That makes me happy for the union employees.

 

Except, maybe their Union won't be the Union of record at the new mfgr.

 

More than likely, the new manufacturer won't be unionized. There would be no reason for a union shop to buy the Twinkie brand. Most unionized companies don't expand, they just try to hang on and avoid bankruptcy for as long as possible before the union drags them under. They're not normally in a position to expand their operation.

Hopefully, the brand will be purchased by a company in a right to work State, and not in Mexico or China.
