NYC sees first homicide within first hours of New Year

One person is dead and two more are wounded after an early morning shooting in New York City.

Police said the shooting happened about an hour after the ball dropped Friday morning, which marked the first homicide of the year.

Two groups of men were reportedly fighting at a hotel in Queens when someone opened fire. The shooter struck two 20-year-old men and a 40-year-old man. Local residents said the hotel has been a hot spot for crime in recent months as many have been using it to party.

“They rent two rooms next to each other, and there are doors that are open so they can have large parties,” a nearby resident stated. “No masks, no social distancing [and] loud music until 6 a.m.”

All three shooting victims were taken to local hospitals, where one of the 20-year-olds died from his injuries while the shooter remains at large.

This incident came after New York City saw a more than 97 percent increase in shooting incidents throughout 2020.

And that was just so obvious the day Trump claimed Article II of the Constitution meant he could do anything he wanted and just ignore the other two branches of the government. He declared himself a dictator right then and there and his treasonous Q uislings cheered.

Iran says it plans to increase Uranium enrichment to 20%

Iran is reportedly planning to up its Uranium enrichment program to surpass far beyond the Iran nuclear deal’s regulations.

On Friday, the United Nations nuclear watchdog announced it was informed by Iran of its intentions to enrich uranium further past energy grade fissile material and closer to weapons-grade material.

For peaceful nuclear energy purposes, Uranium enrichment doesn’t need to exceed five percent. However, Iran said it plans to increase its enrichment to 20 percent for what they’re claiming as “research purposes.”

Making the jump from five percent enrichment to 20 percent is quite difficult. However, enriching to 20 percent cuts the time needed to make weapons-grade uranium, which makes the process substantially easier.

This is why many are worried by Iran’s eagerness to produce large stockpiles of enriched uranium. Iran looks to carry out this enrichment research at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, which is located beneath a mountain.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said nuclear enrichment is not permitted at Fordow according to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. However, activity at the plant has been ongoing.

“The enrichment process includes several stages,” Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said. “The first is transferring material to Fordow, which has now been done.”

Some have blamed President Trump and his withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal for Iran’s increased aggression. However, many said the JCPOA deal was destined to fail, as Iran has been proven in the past to cheat when it comes to international arms restrictions.

One major weak-point in the deal was that Iran did not have to submit to spontaneous inspections. The country also had the ability to delay the checks for up to 24 days.

Another major point of concern included the 10-to-15 year limit on the deal, which could grant an emboldened Iran to achieve nuclear weapons capabilities immediately after the deal’s expiration.

According to reports throughout 2020, the nation’s nuclear stockpiles were 12 times larger than what was permitted under the nuclear deal, which is still an active agreement between many European powers and Iran.

If Iran achieves nuclear weapons capabilities it could set a dangerous precedent, causing regional competitors like Saudi Arabia to try to follow suit.

 

New Puerto Rico gov. sworn in, vows to push statehood

Puerto Rico’s new Governor Pedro Pierluisi affirmed he will seek statehood for the U.S. territory as he is sworn-in as the island’s new leader.

“It is time to put aside the crisis and get on with the pending recovery projects, demand equal rights and fair treatment as American citizens,” Pierluisi stated.

Pierluisi took the oath of office in a ceremony on Saturday and said statehood is “just dignified and possible.” This came after voters approved the idea of Puerto Rico being admitted to the union in a non-binding referendum back in November

The new governor said he will work hard to look for what unites Puerto Ricans, rather than what divides them.

“I need everyone to battle our common enemies, the pandemic, poverty and crime, lack of access to good education and healthcare, economic stagnation, corruption and inequality,” Pierluisi said. “Those are the battles we need to fight together, those are the battles we must win to put Puerto Rico on a path of recovery and progress.”

Pierluisi also urged citizens to work together against the COVID-19 pandemic so they can ultimately resume their lives, work and education.

Well, it turns out Chicago beats out NYCity in the number of murders on the first day of the new year, not like it's a competition or something.

Report: Chicago homicides and shootings surged in 2020

Chicago wrapped up a particularly violent year with a near record number of homicides and shootings. According to police on Friday, 2020 ended with 769 homicides. This is up from 274 in 2019.

There were also over 4,000 shooting victims compared to around 2,600 the year before. Police officers themselves were not spared from the violence either. 79 officers were shot at throughout 2020, compared to 22 in 2019.

Experts put much of the blame on the pandemic, citing record unemployment rates and high rates of mental health and substance abuse.

“This is an unprecedented rise in shootings and homicides in Chicago,” Loyola University Professor David Olsen said. “But we’ve also had an unprecedented situation with the pandemic.”

At least two people were reportedly killed and eight were wounded on the first day of the year. This includes two people who were injured in their own living room when someone fired from outside.

Car jackings also spiked in the city, with more than 1,300 in 2020 compared to around 600 the year before.
