44 San Francisco schools to see name changes

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 7:20 PM PT – Wednesday, January 27, 2021

Schools named after former presidents are set to be changed because school board officials in California claimed they symbolized ties to racism.

In a six to one vote Tuesday, the San Francisco City Public School Board announced its plans to change the names of 44 school sites. The school board members believed the names had dishonorable legacies, ranging from issues with the confederate flag to the treatment of African Americans.

One of the schools set to receive a name change was named after Abraham Lincoln. School board members and former students alike claimed Lincoln was not a true abolitionist.

    upload_2021-1-28_2-15-12.png

Wilson Kong, a graduate from the class of 2005, said the name should serve as an opportunity for learning, not dismissal.

“Why don’t we take that as a lesson learned and teach an extra course on civil rights, on things they did back then in that time period?” Kong questioned. “[And] correct what happened back then that was uncomfortable to the student? Because that’s when I really learned about the history of America.”

The re-naming project will cost at least $400,000 with the potential to cost up to $1 million after re-branding uniforms, re-painting gymnasiums and installing new signage. The move is controversial, as many questioned why school districts were making this a priority amid a pandemic that has millions facing financial setbacks.

Critics called the move the latest instance of liberal cancel culture. They added the board jumped the gun on the issue without weighing the pros and cons of how each individual ex-president contributed to America during his time in office.

Each school has until April to decide on a new name. In the meantime, the San Francisco City Public School Board has yet to provide a timeline on when schools will reopen.

Mich. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer blames travelers for COVID-19 spike

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 7:30 PM PT – Sunday, April 18, 2021

The Governor of Michigan has blamed travelers for a growing number of coronavirus cases. On Sunday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) placed the blame on “snow birds” from Florida for the increasing number of coronavirus variant cases in the Great Lakes State.

In an attempt to stop the spread, Whitmer urged schools to go remote and businesses to have employees work from home for a week.

“This variant, the B117 variant, is what is growing so quickly in Michigan,” Whitmer claimed. “We have the second most — I think — after Florida. Michigan and Florida are not next to each other, but this is the time of the year that snow birds come home from Florida where people are going on spring break and all of these things can contribute to spread.”

Her statement came after she asked for grace when a top staffer took heat for a recent vacation in Florida. Additionally, the state’s health director, Elizabeth Hertel, traveled to Alabama recently despite Whitmer’s calls to avoid out-of-state travel.

Texas didn’t see a COVID surge after opening and ending its mask mandate. Here’s why (yahoo.com)
Texas didn’t see a COVID surge after opening and ending its mask mandate. Here’s why
It’s been over a month since Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the state’s mask mandate and ended business restrictions, but at least for now, Texas has not become the epicenter of a coronavirus surge as some predicted.

After Abbott announced COVID-19 restrictions would end on March 10, President Joe Biden called the decision a “big mistake” and that it reflected “Neanderthal thinking.” A slew of other political figures thought the decision was premature and a way to distract people from the February winter storm and power outage that killed at least 111 Texans.

“It is now time to open Texas 100%,” Abbott said in Lubbock on March 2, joined by Lubbock business leaders at Montelongo’s Mexican Restaurant. “Everybody who wants to work should have the opportunity. Every business that wants to be open should be open.”

Public health experts said it was premature to end the mandates and the governor should’ve waited longer until more people were vaccinated. Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley said at the time that he wished Abbott would have waited until after spring break because holidays usually brought a surge along with them.

But Abbott’s decision seems to have paid off. As some states, such as Michigan, have seen a spike in cases, Texas has been steady. The number of daily cases have fallen 58% since Abbott announced his decision, down from 6,600 to 2,800 on Thursday. Hospitalizations are down 48% and deaths have continued to decline.

Trump closes the borders to stifle the infection rate...then... the leftists open the border as it's classified as a pandemic still.

If that alone doesn't speak volumes about the intent of the leftists.

Red States revoke the big government knows best mandates, infection rates fall...

Blue States triple down on the big government knows best mandates, infection rates are on the rise.

As it's been said several times...it's not that leftists policies dont work...they feel that they haven't done enough to make their policies seem like they work.

House passes cannabis banking bill with bipartisan support

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 11:25 AM PT – Tuesday, April 20, 2021

The House passed bipartisan legislation that would give the cannabis industry access to banking services.

Lawmakers voted 321-101 on Monday in favor of the so-called SAFE Banking Act. The legislation protects banks and other financial institutions to serve state-legal marijuana businesses without fear of federal punishment.

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) said this bill makes some clarifications and will have a meaningful impact.

“I spoke with a CBD retailer in my district who confirmed that while the situation has improved somewhat over the last few years, access to card processing services is uneven and uncertain,” Barr stated. “This bill will provide additional clarity for banks, insurance companies, and card processors that they can in fact do business with legally operating hemp businesses.”

The House passed the same bill in 2019, but stalled in the Senate.

The legislation is now heading to the upper chamber, where Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said it will receive a vote.

Lin Wood advances effort to become new S.C. GOP chair

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 1:53 PM PT – Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Attorney Lin Wood is ramping up efforts to restore integrity of U.S. elections with his new bid for political office.

Reports Tuesday found Wood is advancing his campaign to become the next leader of the Republican Party of South Carolina.

He used to live and practice law in Georgia, but has become a resident of South Carolina in February, facing apparent retribution by corrupt election officials in his state.

Wood made a campaign stop at the Charleston County GOP Convention on April 12, and then he led a major rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He then made a series of strong statements on Monday at the Anderson County Republican Party Convention.

“I’ve spent sometimes 20 hours a day fighting to reverse the election that was stolen from Donald Trump and I’m not going to quit until the truth comes out and Donald Trump is recognized as president of the United States,” Wood stated. “He was elected by the people.”

The South Carolina GOP will select its next chairman at a state party convention next month.

Reports said Wood scored at least a third of delegates since a GOP convention in Greenville last week

House Republicans question ‘political interference’ in 2020 census

A group of House Republicans are raising questions about alleged “political interference” in the final census numbers, which are used to determine the number of congressional districts in each state.

In a letter sent to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, the group — led by House Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky) — the group argued there were inconsistencies from the projections on the number of seats Republican-leaning states were expected to gain and Democrat-leaning states were projected to lose.

“We write today with concerns about the apportionment count released by the Census Bureau, and whether the process which derived the count was fair, accurate, and independent from any White House interference,” the letter said.

“Given the extra time it took to complete the 2020 Census – including not meeting the statutory deadlines by months – we have questions about the methodology and the role the Biden White House may have played in releasing these numbers, especially as the results differ from evaluation estimates released mere months ago in ways that benefit blue states over red states.”

The lawmakers noted that there were delays in the release of the results, and took aim at the Census Bureau for referring their previous questions to the White House, arguing it was “entirely inappropriate” and raises concerns about potential bias.

“When our staff contacted the Census Bureau on the morning of the release with questions about the apportionment count, they were referred by Census officials to the White House for questions,” the letter said.

“Yet the statute is clear: it is the Secretary of Commerce who reports the apportionment count to the President, not the other way around. Referring our staff’s questions to the White House about the results produced by the Census Bureau is entirely inappropriate, and raises questions about the level of White House involvement in the process.”

The group went on to note that Democrats took aim at the previous administration over their handling of the census, leveraging attacks that they may have attempted to tamper with the process for political gain.

“The White House involvement is surprising, since Democrats including Chairwoman [Carolyn] Maloney previously accused the Trump White House of ‘scheming about how to rig the process for political gain.'” they continued.

“While Democrats falsely accused the Trump Administration of using the Census process for political gain, President Biden has done just that. Even as President Trump sought to ensure the accuracy of the 2020 Census apportionment results by excluding illegal aliens from the apportionment count, President Biden reversed course, deciding to dilute American citizens’ representational interests by rescinding this commonsense measure,” the letter said.

“Several liberal states with sanctuary olicies may have lost more congressional seats if illegal immigrants had not been included in the apportionment base.”

The lawmaker cited discrepancies from the estimates in New York, which was projected to lose more than one seat, as an example of a state where they are suspicious of the outcome.

“Remarkably, the differences benefit traditionally blue states – which gained population compared to the estimates – over red states which tended to lose population compared to the estimates. For example, New York was estimated to have a population of 19,336,776, but was attributed an apportionment population much greater than that of 20,215,751, a difference of nearly 900,000 individuals,” they said.

“Likewise, states such as New Jersey and Illinois experienced large population increases of hundreds of thousands of individuals compared to the December estimates, while states such as Arizona, Florida, and Texas experienced large decreases from the December estimates.”

The group is calling for the Department to provide the panel with documents and communications related to whether the “apportionment count was independently audited,” information providing any type of analysis of the error rate and who authorized or denied the final count.

The lawmakers also notably called for any information that may indicate whether the number of undocumente immigrants could have swayed the outcome.

It was announced earlier this month that Texas is set to add two House seats, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina and Oregon will each add one seat while Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan and California will each lose one.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem sues Biden admin over Mount Rushmore fireworks

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem sued the Biden administration on Friday for canceling a planned July 4 fireworks display at Mount Rushmore.

The Republican governor is asking a judge to order that a permit be granted “expeditiously” so the Independence Day celebration can be held at the iconic national monument, Fox News first reported.

“Mount Rushmore is the very best place to celebrate America’s birthday and all that makes our country special,” the federal court filing says.

“After telling us they’d ‘circle back,’ the Biden Administration has not responded to our request to uphold the Memorandum Agreement between the State of South Dakota and the National Parks Service to host a safe and responsible national celebration and fireworks show.”

The NPS cited the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and said it was “only prudent to make plans based on the best available science and public health guidance available today.”

South Dakota is the only state in the nation that never imposed a mask mandate or shutdown of businesses.

Last year, a study blamed the state’s annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for nearly 20 percent all the coronavirus cases diagnosed nationwide in August, saying that more than 460,000 mostly maskless bikers turned it into a “superspreading event.”

Noem, 49, blasted that analysis, by researchers at San Diego State University’s Center for Health Economics & Policy Studies and the IZA Institute of Labor Economics, as “fiction” and “an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis.”

Neither the White House nor the NPS responded to requests for comment, Fox News said.

This should twist the knickers of the hack fuck leftists.

South Carolina House adds firing squad to execution methods

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina House voted Wednesday to add a firing squad to the state’s execution methods amid a lack of lethal-injection drugs — a measure meant to jump-start executions in a state that once had one of the busiest death chambers in the nation.

The bill, approved by a 66-43 vote, will require condemned inmates to choose either being shot or electrocuted if lethal injection drugs aren’t available. The state is one of only nine to still use the electric chair and will become only the fourth to allow a firing squad.

South Carolina last executed a death row inmate 10 years ago Thursday.

The Senate already had approved the bill in March, by a vote of 32-11. The House only made minor technical changes to that version, meaning that after a routine final vote in the House and a signoff by the Senate, it will go to Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, who has said he will sign it.

There are several prisoners in line to be executed. Corrections officials said three of South Carolina’s 37 death row inmates are out of appeals. But lawsuits against the new death penalty rules are also likely.

“Three living, breathing human beings with a heartbeat that this bill is aimed at killing,” said Democratic Rep. Justin Bamberg, rhythmically thumping the microphone in front of him. “If you push the green button at the end of the day and vote to pass this bill out of this body, you may as well be throwing the switch yourself.”

South Carolina first began using the electric chair in 1912 after taking over the death penalty from individual counties, which usually hanged prisoners. The other three states that allow a firing squad are Mississippi, Oklahoma and Utah, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Three inmates, all in Utah, have been killed by firing squad since the U.S. reinstated the death penalty in 1977. Nineteen inmates have died in the electric chair this century.

Louisiana Senate rejects bill allowing social media companies to be sued

The Louisiana Senate rejected a bill Tuesday that called for making social media companies subject to lawsuits for deleting or limiting political or religious speech.

Senate Bill 196 by Sen. Jay Morris, a West Monroe Republican, targeted sites with at least 75 million members, namely Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Users could sue for actual damages plus up to $75,000 in punitive damages “if the social media website knowingly deletes or censors the user's rights of religious speech or political speech, or uses an algorithm to disfavor or censor a user's religious or political speech.”

Similar bills have been introduced in other states but none have been enacted, according to committee testimony. While supporters said they want to protect free speech on the most influential platforms, opponents said the bill would violate federal law and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“They have the right to edit their content as they see fit,” Eric Peterson, who works on technology policy for the free-market Pelican Institute for Public Policy, said during the bill’s committee hearing.

Senators voted 19-18 for the bill, falling one short of the 20-vote majority needed to send Morris’ bill to the House. House Bill 602, a similar bill, was killed in committee Monday. House Bill 14, also with similar aims, awaits a committee hearing.

    In other legislative action Tuesday:

    • The House voted, 69-30, for House Bill 118, a “firearm protection act” that purports to prevent state enforcement of any federal law deemed to violate the Second Amendment, declaring such laws “invalid and of no effect in this state.”

    • The Senate voted, 28-9, for Senate Bill 198 to ban using COVID-19 vaccination status as a condition to enter any state buildings intended for public use.

    • The House voted, 69-35, for House Bill 20 to prohibit the use of private funds to pay election-related expenses. Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed a similar bill last year.

    • The House voted, 98-1, for House Bill 38 to require public school systems to post their financial information on the state's Louisiana Checkbook website.

US Financial Regulators Moving ‘Very Fast’ to Take on Climate Change
    By Emel Akan
    May 6, 2021 Updated: May 6, 2021
    biggersmaller
    Print
WASHINGTON—Financial regulators around the world are rushing to implement models to measure the financial risk arising from climate change. Central banks including the Federal Reserve may soon begin to implement climate stress tests of banks, which may limit financing for industries such as mining, oil, and gas.

The world’s largest central banks are pondering how to promote green financing, as they seek to introduce regulatory frameworks to “mobilize” more money for green and low-carbon investments.

Critics, however, argue that the proposals to introduce climate stress tests aim to “defund the fossil fuel industry” and steer funds to “fashionable but unprofitable investments.”

Stress testing, developed after the Great Recession, is a process by which central banks determine whether a financial institution has enough capital to weather various economic risks.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is one of the pioneers in investigating and deploying concrete plans to address climate risk. The bank is currently piloting a framework for climate stress tests that involves 2,000 banks in the euro area and is planning to publish the result of its exercise in July.

Speaking at a webinar hosted by the ratings firm Moody’s on May 6, Carmelo Salleo, head of stress test modeling division at the ECB, said that modeling financial risk derived from climate risk is still “in its infancy” and there’s a lack of consensus among experts on how to develop the model.

Hence, the scientists at the ECB “had to start from scratch” and do all the steps from finding the relevant data to thinking of different ways to model it, he said.

“But the good news is, it can be done with some investment,” he said.

The purpose of the stress test modeling is to identify climate-related physical and transition risk factors facing banks and companies.

Physical risk refers to costs that arise from extreme weather events such as floods and wildfires. And transition risk is defined as financial risk arising from policy changes in the process of moving towards a low-carbon economy.

According to Salleo, increasing carbon taxes, for example, would affect some companies disproportionately and that generates financial risk for these firms.

The Bank of England announced last year that it would implement its first climate stress test on financial institutions in June. The test will require banks and insurance firms to determine whether they have enough capital levels to mitigate potential losses from climate change.

The developments in Europe have encouraged U.S. regulators to explore ways to mitigate climate-related risks facing the U.S. financial system.

Following the November 2020 presidential election, the Federal Reserve declared climate change as a potential threat to financial stability and formally joined the Network of Central Banks and Supervisors for Greening the Financial System. The network, established three years ago, promotes green finance and aims to develop recommendations for central banks “to manage risks and to mobilize capital for green and low-carbon investments,” according to its website.

GOP offers $928B in response to Biden’s infrastructure plan

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 2:23 PM PT – Thursday, May 27, 2021

A group of Republican senators countered Joe Biden’s massive infrastructure plan with a more modest amount during a news conference at the Capitol on Thursday. The GOP lawmakers made the offer that proposed a $928 billion plan to be spent over eight years.

The plan would allocate an additional $91 billion to roads and bridges, $48 billion to water resources and $25 billion to airports. It would also provide a one-time increase in broadband investments.

Biden’s latest offer to Republicans landed at $1.7 trillion, which is $600 billion less than his original offer. However, GOP lawmakers stand strong in their decision to keep Biden from raising corporate taxes. Therefore, the discussion continues.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) said the small group of Republicans believe their counteroffer is the right step towards a bipartisan compromise. The group has maintained a strong stance against Biden’s tax hikes and have continued to advocate for the reallocation of unused COVID-19 funds.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein flip flops on nixing filibuster, calls it ‘non-issue’

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 1:34 PM PT – Saturday, May 29, 2021

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is facing scrutiny for contradicting herself on the future of the legislative filibuster.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Feinstein said she didn’t see Democrats getting rid of the rule which requires 60 votes to advance bills in the Senate. The California Democrat added that no one has proposed nixing it, calling the matter a ‘non-issue’.

However, in March, the 87-year-old senator issued a statement that said she was open to changing the filibuster to require 51 votes to move legislation. Yet, that same month she told reporters she supported keeping the filibuster as is. Feinstein’s contradictory comments are leaving reporters and lawmakers alike confused.
