The Buddha describes the middle way as a path of moderation between the extremes of sensual indulgence.

Neither too much nor too little. He famously described a Lute. It must not be tuned too tight or too loose because either of those extremes would ruin it's music.

 

But where is your observation and analysis? You have only, again, the writings of your teachers and elders. If you cannot trust them, you cannot base your observation and analysis on them.

And who, Inc, defines what is too much and too little?

Observation of evolution is all around you. It's nature. All living beings evolve.

Let's look at......water birds. Yeah, water birds feeding on a lake.

Take a close look at how they feed as it relates to how they look. You can't have every bird on the lake eating the same food from the same location. That's not sustainable over time. Too much competition.

How does nature naturally solve this problem? By having different species of birds evolve to feed in different locations on the lake.

Short legged birds with short beaks are more fitted for running around on the shore line actively hunting down prey.

Longer legged birds with long pointy beaks can wade further into the water and dig for prey under the mud.

Diving birds submerge and hunt fish

Spoon billed birds sift through the water and filter feed etc etc etc


They all evolved to feed off different prey in different ways. that's the only way the food chain is sustainable and that's the only way the species will survive.

If you can't adapt to a changing environment you die. Those who can and did evolve, survived.

That is evolution. that is reason.

Even little kids understand the concept of too much and too little. if you eat too much food you get sick and vomit. if you eat too little you become hungry much quicker and will lose energy.
Let's look at sex. If you are so obsessed with sexual indulgence that it affects your interaction with others ,(family, friends, work etc) this means you have an unhealthy and unproductive obsession that will negatively affect your life. If you are so uninterested and detached from attaining sexual pleasure that you frustrate your partner and cause division that too is negative.

Everything is moderation.

Too many people on the internet say they're Buddhists.

 

I practice mindfulness on a daily basis. It help me tremendously with my issues, but I wouldn't go so far to say that I'm a Buddhist. I have friends that are, and they are cool people. I take in a lot of spiritual truths to formulate how I fit in this big 'ole goofy world.

 

A homosexual agnostic, Satanic Buddhist, conservitive Charismatic Carma Christian, A liberal Hindu with Zen overtones, Hedonist tendencies balanced with an Islamic mindset and a Jehovah Witness compulsion to go door to door

 

Ah, now if only everyone could be a Buddhist.

Pfft! Buddhism is even more repressive than Christianity. Taoism is a lot better and its not really a religion but an art/science. Its very pro-sex too--unlike Buddhism which teaches to deny the body. Taoism aims for balance.

Buddhism does not teach you to deny the body. You are thinking of ascetics.

Buddhism says do not over indulge yourself in self indulgence. And actually so does Taoism. they have a lot in common.

Except that Buddhists do not believe in the self. How can one become Enlightened through the acceptance of anatta while still living in an earthly, physical body--with sensual tendencies? There is no way besides repression of some sort.
