But at the same time the earth's electromagnetic poles also reverse at times, and the question is what triggers that, and what happens when it does.

You're absolutely right Inky Poo, how brilliant of you. The only problem is that the last time they reversed polarity electricity had not been invented, neither had satellite communications, neither had micro chips or any other electronics, nor GPS, or about a thousand other things your taking for granted including your computer and the internet. One theory is reversing the poles will wipe all that out.

Rest assured, it can't; Earth is entirely stable in the sense that it will return to its previous serene movements before very long. Even a magnitude ten earthquake, which would set the whole planet ringing like a church bell, would not seriously affect the speed or the inclination of its rotation. The planet is WAY too big for any earthquake ever to do that.

The reversal of magnetic polarity is not, so far as I know, connected directly to earthquakes. On the other hand, I don't think anybody knows exactly what it is connected to!

 

I jusy want to know who the egghead was who worked out that the worlds rate of rotation , once in 24hours was altered by 1.26 millionths of a second , and how ?

how do they know it wasn't 1.27 millionths of a second , and just think. If it happens about 700,000 times we will have lst a whole second.

I find that unlikely (though better minds than mine might disagree); most electromagnetic effects rely on electricity generating, or interacting with, a local magnetic field, and that will still happen no matter what the Earth's own magnetic field might be up to.

That's not to say there wouldn't be significant effects, of course; for one thing, long range radio would cease to exist, because without a magnetosphere there's no ionopause to bounce the waves back to Earth. They'd just vanish into space. The bigger problem, though, is that without the magnetosphere, nothing stops the Sun's ultraviolet radiation and mild cosmic rays from bathing the planet. Not good news for the Caucasians, who have lost almost all their immunity to such things by developing white skin!

 

Measurements can be made which are mind-crushingly accurate nowadays; we can detect alterations of trillionths, let alone millionths, of a second in time intervals, because we measure seconds by the number of times an atom will oscillate. There's almost always no good reason to measure things that accurately other than to prove that you can, but in subatomic physics research it's fairly important.

 

Just have to have a sunscreen for a few centuries while the new field builds.

As long as humans can survive a pole reversal, or any other type of disaster I could care less. If no one survives it, we had a good run.

 

the electricity in your home and work place for the most part is A/C, which has no polarity. the power supply in computers and the like are D/C. to change the polarity you would have to change it at the source. to the best of my knowledge an outside force would have little effect if any on our current systems

The earth has been spinning in orbit around and around for YEARS I don't think one earthquake is gonna alter that.

Yeah I lost a whole second out of a year I was gonna use that:laughing:does this mean I'm gonna get older quicker or live longer?I think the planets comming to an end where all gonna die AAAAAHHHHHHH.The laws of physics tells me the planet will continue to turn although it may become unstable just before it explodes and becomes a meteor.

It is real hard to get around the garbage information out there.. everyone wants to find an exciting story even if they have to make one... There has been some and I say "some" evidence that the poles of the earth has flip flopped.. now this is so far back that proof is not proof but strong speculation...Geologist found minerals that had polarity reversed from the then or now polar orentation..

This has probably crossed your info background.. Magnetic North and True north. That is how we read maps and keep them up with the magnetic compass. But remember that much of our navigation comes from satilites in the modern world and navigation..

My old buddy Clive Cussler did a fiction piece about how a anartic ice shelf was being planned at being blasted off and cause an imbalance in the earth and destroy everything..

There is a remote chance of disturbing the curst enouth to cause a tidel wave... which is where most of this crust energy shows itself.. but the Pacific ocean has a lot of absorbing power.. don't loose any sleep over it.. and be careful of religious types..
