The Red Line for me is a Russian Invasion of the Ukraine

What's happening now is that Russia has made incursions into the Crimean province of the Ukraine. It appears that the people in that province are of mostly Russian descent, and hate that Ukraine has gone West. So I don't care much about that one province.

However, if Russia were to invade the actual Ukraine, and seek to subjugate it by force of arms, that is where I draw the line. To just roll over and give the Ukraine to Putin would be to invite similar takeovers of former USSR countries like Hungary and the Czeck Republic.

I think Putin is a nasty bully, but he's not insane. If he realises that there will be a military cost to Russia of invading the Ukraine, he will probably back off. But if he thinks that all he'll get is a bit of wailing and moaning from Western leaders, why would he back down?

Bottom line: if Russia invades the Ukraine itself, rather than just one province, the West should intervene militarily.

 

didn't I mention about sortieing three carrier battle groups with ssn escorts and two amphib assault groups to the black sea; so they could do treetop level supersonic flybys; while EA-135's and nave EA-6B's fry they're com systems? think I mentioned something like that a couple of days ago??

OH, and some LL supersonic Flyovers by those nice TORNADOES would be a nice addition.

Kerry will bluff, strut his stuff and make a fool of himself as always, and never understand how far over his head he is in it.

why would putin order troops to return to base after an exercise?
if they were planning an invasion they would need to use the gains from those drills in order to maximize their effectiveness

 

Maybe because he wants to finish securing Crimea before he takes Ukraine, if he does intend to take Ukraine.

It may also be because Putin likes to fuck with baby Barak. He wants to see if he can fill baby Barak's diapers again.

Pro-Russia groups take over government buildings across Ukraine

Activists break into buidlings in Donetsk, Odessa and Luhansk as poll finds many in those areas would like reunification

Pro-Russian forces in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk have overrun a government building and proclaimed they have taken over the regional administration, locals have told the Guardian. In an ominous sign of the spread of anti-Ukrainian sentiment among Russian-majority parts of the country, similar actions were reported in Odessa on the Black Sea and Luhansk, near the border with Russia.

At about midday on Monday100 people broke into the Donetsk regional administration building via the back door, secured the ground floor and meeting room of the administration office, and hoisted a Russian flag atop the building. Several hundred people were also waving Russian flags and shouting slogans in a nearby square.

It is unlikely that Russia would go for an all out invasion of Ukraine rather it will take Ukraine piecemeal. It will take Ukraine in steps and piece by piece. The reason is the cost of an all out invasion is more than Russia may possibly be able to deal with.

Russia wants Ukraine because of the vast resources. In my opinion, taking Ukraine is just part Russia's overall plan, which is to bring all Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries back under it's control. Also, taking Ukraine now makes perfect sense to me because Ukraine's resources can greatly help Russia and the instability of Ukrainian Government makes taking Ukraine look like an easy task in Russia's eyes.

its been no secret that since the fall of the soviet union that the russian government wanted to "reunite the motherland"
hell putin publicly made that statement when he was "elected"
but even putin istn ignorant enough to take the region by force using the full brunt of the military because that would destroy the very resources he wants

Right, and Russia is moving on it now and will keep going. It will try to build resources and become more powerful by strategically taking Ukraine piece by piece. Then it will move on to the other FSU countries.
