Why does everything need water to survive? or why do we have all this hair on our body? We were born in H2O and our our ancestors were ghastly beasts whose body hygiene would make you gag.

 

For water, it is just a cornerstone of our biochemistry. That is the simple answer. I personally don't enjoy biochemistry due to all the memory required and would just suggest a quick search.

I would suspect that hair has had multiple functions from an evolution point of view. On the smallest scale, filopodia are used as sensors to aid in movement; some higher species, cats for example still use hair for this function. Other animals have adapted it to be a sort of insulator or armor. For us I think it is more just a sexual selection pressure, much like a peacocks tail. That would be my answer off the fly.

 

I tried to get in under the edit but my antivirus started fucking with me. We also use hairs as sensors also (how I meant earlier in aid of movement,) particularly hearing.

When I answered this before I was in a bit of a rush for a road trip to meet one of buddies that was having a divorce celebration. On the way I had nothing to do for about 3 hours except drink and live inside my head. I started kicking myself about why I didn't have a better answer for this water bit when something dawned on me: valence electrons. Now while this isn't a comprehensive explanation, I think this one likely goes a long way. To start it is important to know that all organic live is a cycling of elements and molecules. Life feeds on life and there isn't a single living cell in your body that was there a couple decades ago. My colorful metaphor that follows is perhaps a bit sexist, but I think it is more entertaining that way.

Elements will share electrons with one another in order to achieve certain stable states. Now the first stable state of electrons in the layer closest to an element is two electrons, after those are filled additional layers fill with eight electrons each to make them happy. Now mathematically when dealing with any equation, if you are trying to get it to the next magic number that minus two is divisible by eight, it is often easy to add small numbers to it.

Now Hydrogens are the cock sluts of the element world. There are a lot of them, they are easy, they don't need much, but they will only fulfill the most basic of needs (will share their one electron for one so they have their magic number two.) Now like many sluts on the prowl they are happy to go out with one of their own while searching H-H single bonded; they each share an electron they both have two and they are happy until something bigger and better comes along.

Now the next most easy need to fill would be the element willing to share two electrons for two. But if you look next in line you have Helium at two electrons, but since two is all that is wanted for that first layer of electrons Helium doesn't play well with others. Helium is the JoeDirty of the element kingdom. He says fuck you guys, I am giving you nothing and I expect nothing in return. I am taking my two balls (electrons) and I am going to play with them by myself.

So that means we need to look for the next most simple and abundant element that is willing to share two electrons. Here you find the man whore Oxygen. Oxygen has eight total electrons but since two of them are being used to take care of that first layer, he has a need of two to be happy on his next layer. Now in just an Oxygen rich environment, he is happy hanging out with a similar buddy and scouting. This makes a O=O double bond, they each share two electrons and they are both happy. But they are also happy when in the presence of sluts. Those littles hookers are into Oxygen and don't mind sharing a pogo stick. Each Hydrogen will share their electron with Oxygen in return for Oxygen giving one to each of them, H-O-H single bonded. Now both Oxygen and Hydrogen are free to leave at any time they find something better like perhaps molecule orgy, and it is easy for the dissed crowd to pick up and extra H or O as needed to keep everyone happy and everything stable.

There are a lot of these promiscuous elements running around, they are happy with almost anyone and they provide very basic needs that almost everyone (H, O, both together, or anyone seeking an extra electron or two) can appreciate to help them reach their happy place. In short, these elements help the cycle of others who need to constantly break apart and reform bonds to keep life moving.
