‘That is a lie’: NYT’s Maggie Haberman pummels Trump’s claims on taking coronavirus seriously from the start

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman on Wednesday delivered a scathing indictment of President Donald Trump’s leadership during the coronavirus pandemic, which has been marked by frequent misstatements and outright lies.

While appearing on CNN, Haberman tore apart Trump’s claim that he had taken the coronavirus crisis very seriously right from the beginning.

*“He wasn’t taking this particularly seriously,” Haberman said. “He didn’t want officials to talk about it publicly for fear of rattling the markets. He was angry when people who had been affected on cruise ships ended up brought back to the U.S. for quarantine… For him to go out and claim that he treated this as if it was a pandemic the whole time, that is a lie, it’s not true.”

Haberman also hammered Trump for not understanding the full scope of the problem and for keeping major government agencies on the sidelines for weeks.

“He doesn’t take most of these departments or agencies particularly seriously unless they were — unless it deals with immigration or law enforcement,” she said. “If you are not initiating a strong response, and you are outsourcing this solely to health professionals, you’re not going to mobilize major portions of the government in order to be able respond to this. Candidly, it’s inexcusable that it took this long.”

US Intel issued ‘ominous’ classified warnings on coronavirus — but Trump told the country the opposite: report

New details about the “ominous” warnings about COVID-19 coronavirus were reported by The Washington Post reported Friday.

“U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous, classified warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the coronavirus while President Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen,” the newspaper reported, citing “U.S. officials familiar with spy agency reporting.”

“The intelligence reports didn’t predict when the virus might land on U.S. shores or recommend particular steps that public health officials should take, issues outside the purview of the intelligence agencies. But they did track the spread of the virus in China, and later in other countries, and warned that Chinese officials appeared to be minimizing the severity of the outbreak,” The Post reported.

“Taken together, the reports and warnings painted an early picture of a virus that showed the characteristics of a globe-encircling pandemic that could require governments to take swift actions to contain it. But despite that constant flow of reporting, Trump continued publicly and privately to play down the threat the virus posed to Americans,” the newspaper reported.

A new timeline on the warnings is coming into focus.

“Intelligence agencies ‘have been warning on this since January,’ said a U.S. official who had access to intelligence reporting that was disseminated to members of Congress and their staffs as well as to officials in the Trump administration, and who, along with others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive information,” the newspaper explained.

“Donald Trump may not have been expecting this, but a lot of other people in the government were — they just couldn’t get him to do anything about it,” the official said. “The system was blinking red.”

Donald Trump pleaded ignorance on Friday about a senior GOP senator dumping hotel stocks that since have lost value due to the coronavirus outbreak, but then immediately admitted to knowing a Democratic lawmaker also sold stocks before the virus his US soil.

"I'm not aware of it," the Republican president said when asked about Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr selling hotel stocks around the time lawmakers began getting classified briefings about the virus and its potential damaging blow to the US economy.

Mr Burr on Friday tried to explain away his move by saying he got the idea by watching CNBC, adding he has referred the matter to the Senate Ethics Committee for a full review. Because that process likely will take months, Mr Burr's first major political scandal could simply be lost to the daily deluge of COVID-19 developments.

But almost as soon as the president claimed to not know anything about Mr Burr's plight, he asked a reporter why she wasn't mentioned in her question that a Democratic senator also dumped stocks before the virus outbreak.

He was referring to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a senior California Democrat, who has said the stock portfolio owned be she and her husband is managed by a blind trust.

"I saw some names. I know all of them," Trump said after first claiming no knowledge of the situation, first reported by ProPublica and others.

Even before the Ethics Committee started its investigation, the president again got in front of typical Washington processes for finding the truth, appearing eager to defend Mr Burr, who has become a close ally, he said this: "they certainly did nothing wrong."

And, as always, Mr Trump went on the attack, trying to paint the reporter as biased against all Republicans.

"It's interesting that you mention two people, but you don't mention one that happens to be a Democrat," he said.

The reporter then clarified her question to focus on whether "any senator" should be investigated if they sold stocks while possessing knowledge about a coming likely crisis while not warning their constituents of the financial danger.

"Possibly," he conceded, before appearing to again signal his desire for Burr – and, indirectly Feinstein - to be cleared: "I find them to be honourable people."

Fauci on differing with Trump on coronavirus 'game-changer': 'I just want to get the facts out'

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, in a new interview addressed the times he's been forced to contradict President Trump about the U.S. response to the novel coronavirus outbreak, saying that he just wants to "get the facts out."

“I don’t want to embarrass him,” Fauci, who has become one of the public faces of the administration's response, told The New York Times in an interview published on Saturday. "I don’t want to act like a tough guy, like I stood up to the president. I just want to get the facts out. And instead of saying, ‘You’re wrong,’ all you need to do is continually talk about what the data are and what the evidence is."

The comments came as President Trump continues to tout an anti-malaria drug as a coronavirus cure, despite health officials' warnings that not enough is known about its effects to draw a conclusion. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to approve the drug's use to treat COVID-19.

Fauci clarified some of Trump's comments about the drug on Friday after the president said he had a "good feeling" about it. He said that hydroxychloroquine could not be used to prevent COVID-19.

"Many of the things out there are what I have called 'anecdotal reports,'" he told reporters at a press briefing. “The information that you’re referring to specifically is anecdotal. It was not done in a controlled clinical trial, so you really can’t make any definitive statement about it.”

He reiterated those remarks on Saturday, the same day that Trump tweeted that "HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine."

“I’m not totally sure what the president was referring to,” Fauci said. “Many things you hear out there are what I call anecdotal reports. They may be true, but they’re anecdotal. .. If you really want to definitively know if something works, you have to do the kind of trial that you get the good information with.”

Fauci acknowledged to The Times that he has been telling Trump things he doesn't want to hear and that he's "publicly had to say something different with what he states." But he said that Trump has listened to his remarks, noting that he's a "smart guy."

"He’s not a dummy. So he doesn’t take it — certainly up to now — he doesn’t take it in a way that I’m confronting him in any way," he said. "He takes it in a good way.”

Fauci has warned for months now that the outbreak of COVID-19 could put a major strain on the U.S. healthcare system without strict measures in place to prevent mass gatherings. He has appeared on numerous television programs in recent weeks to inform Americans about the seriousness of the disease and the need for measures to slow its rapid spread.

Speaking on CBS on Sunday, he said that his comments about Trump’s promotion of anti-malarial therapies did not amount to a disagreement.

“I, on the other side, have said I’m not disagreeing with the fact anecdotally they might work, but my job is to prove definitively from a scientific standpoint that they do work,” he said. “So I was taking a purely medical scientific standpoint and *the president was trying to bring hope to the people.”

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, alongside administration officials, claim the United States can test millions of people for the coronavirus; but, in reality, the administration has tested far less than numbers touted at Covid-19 press conferences.

The new supercut video – released by The Bulwark’s senior video editor, Barry Rubin on Sunday morning – places a spotlight on the claims of available test kits compared to the number of people tested.

The video begins with a clip of Trump on February 26th, stating, “while we’re testing everybody that we need to test… we’re finding very little problem.”

As the days roll by and press conferences continue, so do the administration’s claims of testing capacity, which is substantially lower than the Covid-19 tests administered nationwide.

The video further shows Trump dispelling the fear that there aren’t enough test kits while touting calm and claiming to a reporter that he’s “not hearing” the people who can’t be tested due to the low supply.

As the number of tests promised inexorably increased – upwards of 2 million – the tests administered across the country as of March 20th remained under 200,000, the video states.

In yet another polished video, Rubin pairs Trump’s misleading statements with real-time testing statistics, which shows Trump’s claims falling flat.

In an interview, Sunday morning with Mediaite, Rubin stated, “Donald Trump is doing exactly the opposite of what you want the president doing,” while further urging his fellow Americans to take the coronavirus seriously.

Rubin added that the most vital component to stoping Covid-19’s spread is to have testing kits available and accessible – which is what sparked the idea for the video.

FEMA flip-flops on whether or not it used DPA to obtain test kits after Trump’s press conference

President Donald Trump has been sending mixed signals about whether or not he has actually authorized the Defense Production Act to compel the private sector to produce new medical equipment — and as he does, so too have the federal agencies that would actually be carrying out his order.

Early on Tuesday, both the president and FEMA suggested that the DPA had been activated to procure test kits for coronavirus — but at his press conference in the afternoon, Trump seemed to reverse himself and say the government has not “found it to be the case” that DPA is necessary yet.

Shortly after the briefing, FEMA followed suit and suggested that the test kits, in fact, had not come about as a result of DPA.

Trump accuses New York hospitals of ‘hoarding’ masks and ventilators without evidence

President Donald Trump went off on a rant accusing hospitals, doctors and nurses of hoarding equipment and intentionally exaggerating the things they need.

Speaking in the Rose Garden Sunday, Trump asked, “How do you go from 10 to 20 to 300,000 masks? Where are the masks going, are they going out the backdoor?”

Indeed, the masks are going in the trash after they’re used. The masks are one-use masks, which Trump said he wants to be able to sanitize them so people can reuse them.

“They have to look into that in New York,” Trump said, noting that he heard they went from 10,000 masks to 300,000 masks.

“I’m I don’t think it’s hoarding, it’s maybe worse than hoarding,” Trump said.

Actually Trump supporters, especially the ones like @shootersa and @shy guy are actually cult followers with a shared psychosis with Trump. They take on his characteristics like lying and promoting frauds and being women haters that cannot tolerate when a strong woman stands up to them. We see this everyday on this forum. In recent days, a growing contingent of Trump supporters have pushed the narrative that health experts are part of a deep-state plot to hurt Trump’s reelection efforts by damaging the economy and keeping the United States shut down as long as possible. Trump himself pushed this idea in the early days of the outbreak, calling warnings on coronavirus a kind of “hoax” meant to undermine him.

The notion is deeply troubling, leading health experts say, because what the country does next and how many people die depend largely on what evidence U.S. leaders and the public use to inform their decisions. Epidemiologists worry their research — intended to avert massive deaths in situations exactly like this pandemic — will be dismissed by federal leaders when it is needed most.

In a conference call with governors on Monday, President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about shortages of coronavirus testing equipment in states across the nation, claiming he “hasn’t heard about testing being a problem” despite loud warnings from local officials and near-constant reporting on the issue by media outlets.

*“I haven’t heard about testing in weeks,” the president said, according to leaked audio of the call obtained by CBS News. “We’ve tested more now than any nation in the world. We’ve got these great tests and we come out with another one tomorrow that’s, you know, almost instantaneous testing. But I haven’t heard about testing being a problem.”

Trump’s remarks came after Montana Gov. Steve Bullock said on the call that his state doesn’t “have enough supplies to even do the testing” for coronavirus, which has officially infected more than 163,000 people in the United States.

“Literally we are one day away, if we don’t get test kits from the CDC, that we wouldn’t be able to do testing in Montana,” said Bullock.

“It would be shocking to me that… anyone who has had access to any newspaper, radio, social networks, or any other communication would not be knowledgeable about the need for test kits,” Inslee said, noting his state is in “dire” need of equipment. “I can be assured that the White House knows very well about this desperate need for test kits.”

Trump has repeatedly ignored or brushed aside warnings from frontline workers and local officials about shortages of of testing kits and other medical equipment as the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly across the United States.

During a press briefing Monday evening, Trump lashed out at PBS reporter Yamiche Alcindor after she pressed the president on why, despite his frequent claims to the contrary, the United States continues to lag behind other major nations in coronavirus testing per capita.

“You should be saying congratulations instead of asking a really snarky question,” Trump said.
