‘IT WAS ON NATIONAL TV’: Internet blows up on Trump for lying that his disinfectant proposal was ‘sarcasm’

A brief appearance on TV by Donald Trump during a Friday signing ceremony turned into a deluge of criticism on Twitter after the president claimed his comments on Thursday about using light and disinfectants to treat victims of the coronavirus was merely him responding sarcastically to a reporter’s question.

The brief exchange, which CNN’s Anderson Cooper called blatant lying by the president, infuriated Twitter users who called out the president.

Trump lies about dire intel he received on virus — and says most people thought it would blow over

President Donald Trump on Tuesday lied about the dire intelligence assessments that he had received earlier this year about the COVID-19 pandemic, and suggested that most experts actually believed the virus would disappear.

Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason reports that Trump was asked about a Washington Post report this week that detailed the stark warnings about the threat of the virus that appeared in the President’s Daily Brief, but which were seemingly ignored for weeks as the president sought to downplay the threat of the pandemic.

Trump responded, according to Mason, by arguing that “most people thought earlier this year that the coronavirus was going to blow over” and then said he would have to “check when the early warnings came.”

In fact, according to the Post, daily intelligence briefs from this past January “traced the virus’s spread around the globe, made clear that China was suppressing information about the contagion’s transmissibility and lethal toll, and raised the prospect of dire political and economic consequences.”

However, sources tell the paper that Trump didn’t take these warnings seriously because he rarely has the attention span to read through the briefs.

Trump’s own testing chief says his promise of 5 million daily coronavirus tests is ‘impossible’

During a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday, President Trump claimed that the U.S. will be able to carry out five million coronavirus tests per day. But according to a top official overseeing the effort, that goal is nowhere near achievable given the technology that’s available, TIME reports.

“[T]here is absolutely no way on Earth, on this planet or any other planet, that we can do 20 million tests a day, or even five million tests a day,” Admiral Brett Giroir told TIME. Since the beginning of the year, the Administration has conducted 5.7 million tests in total.

According to Covid Tracking Project data, the largest number of tests conducted by the U.S. in a single day was 314,182. To meet Trump’s goal. the U.S. would have to ramp up testing by 1,500 percent.

“Trump’s assertion was the latest in a series of inaccurate and misleading statements made by the president about the COVID-19 crisis that have often placed him at odds with the experts advising him,” TIME’s W.J. Hennigan writes. “On Feb. 28, speaking about the new coronavirus, he declared ‘like a miracle, it will disappear.’ On March 6 he said that ‘anybody that wants a test can get a test’. Last week, bizarrely, he speculated that ‘ultraviolet’ light or the injecting of disinfectants might serve as treatments.”

Public Trust in Trump on Coronavirus Craters in New Poll; 98% of Americans Reject Injecting Disinfectant Into Covid-19 Patients

President Donald Trump’s standing with the public about the coronavirus outbreak has sharply decreased in the past month, and Americans are nearly unanimous in rejecting the president’s suggestion that injecting disinfectant could be a possible treatment for Covid-19.

A new Reuters poll released on Tuesday, as the total number of coronavirus cases in the country crossed the one million threshold, found 47% of Americans now say they are “very” or “somewhat” likely to follow Trump’s advice on the coronavirus pandemic. That represents a significant, 15 percentage-point drop from a Reuters poll in late March.

More notably, 98% of Americans — which includes 98% of Democrats and Republicans — say they would not want to be injected with a household disinfectant like bleach if they came down with the coronavirus.

Overall, Trump’s job approval now sits at 43% — a statistically insignificant one percentage point drop from late March — and the same percentage of the public now approves of his handling of the coronavirus outbreak, per the Reuters poll. That figure exactly matches a recent Morning Consult poll, which also found 43% approved of the president’s handling of the crisis, a net -22 percentage point drop from Trump high-water mark in mid March.

In the 2020 matchup, Trump trails Biden by four percentage points, 44% to 40%.

He said Thursday that he had seen evidence that gave him a “high degree of confidence” the novel coronavirus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China, supporting theories repeatedly floated by his White House team and online conspiracy-theory sites. Trump contradicted an on-the-record statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence just hours earlier that stated no such assessment has been made and it continues to “rigorously examine” whether the outbreak “began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan.” When Trump was asked why he was confident in his assessment, he replied: “I can’t tell you that. Trump Offers Lie After Lie Under Lincoln’s Unblinking Gaze

As the 16th president stared down at the 45th president’s socially distant town hall, Trump rolled out a series of astounding falsehoods.

Even by President Donald Trump’s historically low standards, the town hall on reopening the nation’s economy featured some astounding falsehoods on Sunday night: that he was never warned about the novel coronavirus until late January; that all 43,000 people who returned to the United States from China after the implementation of his travel ban were tested; that the American people will have a vaccine by Christmas.

But perhaps the biggest demonstrable lie told under the unblinking eyes of Abraham Lincoln was Trump’s repeated insistence that, despite the mounting death toll from the coronavirus pandemic and the collapsing national economy, “it’s all working out.”

“It’s all working out.”

“I think it’s all working out. You know, the numbers are heading in the right direction,” Trump said, in response to a question about workers at meat processing plants being forced back on the job despite fears of spreading the virus. “It’s all working out. It’s all working out. It’s horrible that we have to go through it, but it’s all working out.”

The town hall—billed by Fox News as “America Together: Returning to Work” and broadcast live from the memorial built to honor a president who, earlier this weekend, Trump said did less for black people than he has—was in many ways a highlight reel of the president’s inadequate response to a pandemic that has claimed more than 68,000 lives, including a record 2,909 just on Thursday.

The president casually announced that the final death toll could reach 100,000 people, more than 50 percent higher than he told Americans only a few weeks ago. He made scientifically dubious claims about the speed and availability of a potential vaccine—throwing in a vow to “be AIDS-free within eight years.” And he saved his most emotional answer for a question from a New Jersey guidance counselor who asked him to “please let go of those behaviors” and “characteristics that do not serve you” when dealing with the press.

Trump’s response to that request, as best as it can be distilled, included a rambling list of supposed accomplishments unrelated to the pandemic, including increased military spending and the formation of the “Space Force,” as well as the assertion that not even Lincoln ever faced such mistreatment while in office.

“I am greeted with a hostile press the likes of which no president has ever seen. The closest would be that gentleman right up there,” Trump said, nodding at Daniel Chester French’s statue of the 16th president in the temple where, as Royal Cortissoz’s epitaph states, “the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”

In the days since Trump meanderingly suggested that Americans might be able to cure themselves of COVID-19 by injecting either sunlight or disinfectant into their bodies, the White House has attempted to shift the focus of its coronavirus response from public health to an economic message.

But as question after question came in from across the country about the specifics of Trump’s response to a pandemic that has effectively shuttered the national economy, Trump primarily responded with boasts about past accomplishments, mini-tirades about past grievances, or generalities about how the nation will “win bigger than we’ve ever won before” once the crisis abates.

“You’re gonna get a job where you’re gonna get more money, frankly,” Trump told a single mom in Alabama who said she was facing eviction and struggled to pay even the smallest bills. “I’ve got a great feel for this stuff.”

“I want ’em to go back, yeah, I want to get our country back,” Trump said, in response to a pair of questions from a teacher and student about his plan to reopen the nation’s schools. “We have to go back. We have to go back. And, whatever it is.”

“It depends on where you’re coming from,” Trump told a D.C. restaurateur who asked about specific protocols to keep restaurants safe. “It goes up and it goes up rapidly,” he added of the death toll, but sunnily explained that the nation’s dead are “at the very lower end of the plane.”

“We are going to have a vaccine by the end of this year.”
Every desired answer, from a timeline for opening restaurants at full capacity to filling sports stadiums and college graduations, was predicated on Trump’s enthusiastic prediction that “we are going to have a vaccine by the end of this year.”

“The doctors would say, ‘Well, you shouldn’t say that.’ I’ll say what I think,” Trump said, doubling down on a vaccine development schedule that would surpass even the most hysterically optimistic timelines put forward by epidemiologists for the rollout of a potential vaccine. “I think we’re going to have a vaccine much sooner than later… Look, a vaccine has never gone like it’s gone now.”

At one point, Trump marveled at the changes in everyday life as a result of the pandemic, noting the yawning distance between himself and Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. But that distance, while effective at halting the spread of the deadly coronavirus, did little to stop the spread of another pandemic: what World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called “an infodemic.”

“We’re not just fighting an epidemic; we’re fighting an infodemic,” Ghebreyesus told the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 15, the same day as Trump’s third-to-last all-day visit to one of his golf clubs. “Fake news spreads faster and more easily than this virus, and is just as dangerous.”

Slate asked The Athletic’s Keith Law, a senior baseball writer, if Trump’s numbers sounded like those of someone who could have gone pro. “You don’t hit .138 for some podunk, cold-weather high school playing the worst competition you could possibly imagine,” Law said. “It’s absolutely laughable. Two months to the day after President Donald Trump said “anybody that wants” a coronavirus test “can get a test,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany called it “nonsensical” to think that everyone should be tested.

Asked at Wednesday’s White House press briefing if Americans who go back to work should be able to get tested for COVID-19 in order to feel comfortable in their work environment, McEnany described that level of testing as a “myth”—even though White House staffers are tested regularly. “If we tested every single American in this country at this moment, we’d have to retest them an hour later and an hour later after that because at any moment, you could theoretically contract this virus,” she said. “The notion that everyone needs to be tested is simply nonsensical.”

McEnany went on to boast about the number of tests that have been administered in America during the pandemic, noting that the people who need to be tested going forward are in “vulnerable populations,” such as in nursing homes or in meatpacking plants.

Vice President Mike Pence, in charge of the President’s Coronavirus Task Force, was caught on a hot mic asking if he could carry empty boxes of what had housed personal protective equipment (PPE) off a van and into the front door of a nursing home “for the cameras.”

Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel mocked the vice president.

“Here he is, with no mask on, wheeling boxes of PPEs into a health care center, and doing his best to lift them,” Kimmel said, narrating the video. “What a hero.”

“And since it was going so well, and also because he didn’t realize he had a mic on, Magic Mike decided to keep it going.”

Someone tells Pence, “Those are empty sir.”

“Well, can I carry the empty ones, just for the camera?” Pence asks.

Mike Pence pretending to carry empty PPEs into a hospital is the perfect metaphor for who he is and what he’s doing. A big box of nothing delivering another box of nothing.
