CLAIM 1: Illegal traffic has dropped at least 90 percent in border sectors with barriers

This claim is VERIFIED, but context is needed.

Data from the Customs and Border Patrol show that from 2000 to 2017, apprehensions dropped by 80 to 90 percent in the border zones it shared information on.

For example, there were 115,696 apprehensions in El Paso in 2000. Seven years later in 2017, there were 25,193 apprehensions. That was also the trend in San Diego. There were 151,681 apprehensions in 2000 and 26,086 apprehensions in 2017, according to the CBP data. In Yuma, there were 108,747 apprehensions in 2000 and 12,847 in 2017.

However, this claim leaves out the fact that apprehensions dropped everywhere - not just in border sectors with barriers.

There was a decrease from 1,643,679 apprehensions in 2000 to 303,916 apprehensions in 2017, which is an 82 percent decrease along the entire border.

CLAIM 2: Border Patrol seized hundreds of thousands of pounds of drugs in 2018

The Republican Party's website specifically said Border Patrol seized 282,000 pounds of cocaine, 284,000 pounds of meth, 6,500 pounds of heroin and 2,400 pounds of fentanyl.

But CBP records don’t match those numbers. Their records show that Border Patrol seized 54,368 pounds of cocaine, 77,674 pounds of meth, 5,342 pounds of heroin and 1,689 pounds of fentanyl.

So based on the official CBP data, the Republican Party's numbers are FALSE. It's unclear where the Republican website got its data.

Border Patrol data also shows that 87 percent of those drugs were seized at legal ports of entry or airports, not from people illegally crossing the border.

CLAIM 3: More than 17,000 people with criminal records were arrested at the border, including more than 6,000 gang members

The numbers in this claim are VERIFIED, but again, context is key.

CBP data shows that more than 60 percent of people with criminal records were caught at legal entry points, border crossings and airports, not border sections without barriers.

ICE data supports the claim that about 6,000 gang members were removed, but it indicates that the individuals came from all over the country, not just from the Southern border.

The numbers are accurate, but the claim that people with criminal records were all arrested at the border is FALSE

CLAIM 4: Sen. Schumer and Democrats passed a $46 billion bill to build a physical barrier on the border

This claim is FALSE.

While Sen. Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats did pass a bill in 2013 about border security, it only allocated $7.5 to $8 billion for building and maintaining fencing.

The bill called for that money to be used on up to 700 miles of fence on the border.

The bill wasn’t voted on in the House and all 32 opponents in the Senate were Republicans.

CLAIM 5: Speaker Pelosi and the House passed a bill to give $54 billion to foreign governments

This claim is FALSE.

Under Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s leadership this year, the House passed a series of plans to fund the government.

Roughly $54 billion was set aside for the “Department of State, foreign operations and related programs.” But $16 billion of that is for State Department operations.

The claim that all $54 billion was for “foreign governments” is FALSE.

It’s also worth noting that $54 billion is the same amount of money the Republican-led congressional committees approved last summer.

CLAIM 6: Asylum claims in the U.S. have increased 1,700 percent since 2010

These numbers don’t stack up -- at least not for the years listed.

Department of Homeland Security data show that there were 5,171 asylum applications in 2007, and in 2016, that number had risen to 91,786.

That’s an increase of 1,675 percent and would make the statement true.

But in 2010, there were only 8,830 claims. That’s an increase of 940 percent since 2010, not 1,700 percent as the Republican Party website stated.

It is worth noting that the most recent DHS data is from 2016. The numbers for FY17 and FY18 aren’t known yet, so it’s possible that percentage is higher based off those numbers.

So, the number on the Republican Party's website is accurate depending on which year you use.

CLAIM 7: There’s a backlog of more than 780,000 immigration cases

Data varies slightly on this number. Federal records, Government Accountability Office records and records kept by Syracuse University show a backlog between 600,000-850,000 pending immigration cases.

So the Republican Party's claim checks out, but as in the previous claim, the numbers don’t probe the larger claim that the asylum laws are weak or abused.

What I have done is ask you simple and straightforward questions like if the border wall is so imperative for our security why didn't the Republicans fund it when they controlled the House and Senate for the past two years. And do you agree that Trump should declare a National Emergency over his alleged border crisis?

Federal workers say ‘we don’t care’ about not getting paid — Trump tells Fox News host Jeanine Pirro

President Donald Trump called into Fox News to talk to his ally Judge Jeanine Pirro Saturday evening. Railing against the Democrats for refusing to give him a blank check for his wall, the president called it nothing but “politics.”

It’s unclear why the president didn’t get his border wall while Republicans were in power in the House and Senate, but since the Democrats took over the House Trump’s options are growing slimmer.

Trump explained that he was just one person and couldn’t travel to every House seat, and for that reason, he lost the House in 2018. That’s the only reason the president is having trouble now, he explained.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands are unable to pay their bills, their rent or mortgages or even prescription drugs. Trump said that those folks “don’t care.”

“A lot of people that aren’t getting their checks are letting us know, ‘we don’t care. You’ve got to solve the crisis at the border,'” Trump told Pirro.

Pirro said that it’s clear Trump has done all of the negotiating and blamed Democrats for not coming to the table. Trump has refused to negotiate unless his wall is part of the bill. Unless he gets money for the wall, he’s refusing to even speak to Democrats. Such was the case Friday when he walked out of the negotiations telling everyone, “bye-bye.”

Two years after taking the oath of office, President Trump has made 8,158 false or misleading claims, according to The Fact Checker’s database that analyzes, categorizes and tracks every suspect statement uttered by the president.

That includes an astonishing 6,000-plus such claims in the president’s second year.

Put another way: The president averaged nearly 5.9 false or misleading claims a day in his first year in office. But he hit nearly 16.5 a day in his second year, almost triple the pace.

We started this project as part of our coverage of the president’s first 100 days, largely because we could not possibly keep up with the pace and volume of the president’s misstatements. Readers demanded we keep it going for the rest of Trump’s presidency. Our interactive graphic, managed with the help of Leslie Shapiro of The Washington Post graphics department, displays a running list of every false or misleading statement made by Trump. You can also search for specific claims or obtain monthly or daily totals.

In the first 100 days, the president made 492 unsupported claims. He managed to top that number just in the first three weeks of 2019. In October, as he was barnstorming the country in advance of the midterm elections, he made more than 1,200 false or misleading claims.

Not surprisingly, the biggest source of misleading claims is immigration, with a tally that has grown with the addition of 300 immigration claims in the past three weeks, for a total of 1,433.

In the president’s immigration address Saturday, the last day of his second year in office, we counted 12 false or misleading claims, including:

"Heroin alone kills 300 Americans a week, 90 percent of which comes across our southern border.”

The 300-a-week number checks out. But while 90 percent of the heroin sold in the United States comes from Mexico, virtually all of it comes through legal points of entry. “A small percentage of all heroin seized by [Customs and Border Protection] along the land border was between Ports of Entry (POEs),” the Drug Enforcement Administration said in a 2018 report. So Trump’s wall would do little to halt drug trafficking. Trump’s repeated claim that the wall would stop drug trafficking is a Bottomless Pinocchio claim.
“Many of these security ideas have been proposed by Democrats themselves, and all of them have been supported by Democrats in the past, including a physical barrier wall or fence.”

Trump overstates the supposed Democratic support. Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and many Democrats (although not Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California) voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which was signed by President George W. Bush and authorized construction of a fence along nearly 700 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. It passed 283 to 138 in the House, with 64 Democratic votes, and 80 to 19 in the Senate, with 26 Democratic votes. But the fence they voted for is not as substantial as the wall Trump is proposing. Trump himself has called the 2006 fence a “nothing wall.”
"However, the whole concept of having lengthy trials, for anyone who sets one foot in our country unlawfully, must be changed by Congress. It is unsustainable. It is ridiculous. Few places in the world would even consider such an impossible nightmare.”

Trump is routinely astonished by U.S. and international laws on asylum. This is how it works in any country that abides by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees: A refugee enters and makes a petition, and the government makes a ruling after analyzing the facts. It’s also worth keeping in mind that 85 percent of all deportations in the United States are ordered quickly, without a hearing before a judge.
"If we build a powerful and fully designed see-through steel barrier on our southern border, the crime rate and drug problem in our country would be quickly and greatly reduced. Some say it could be cut in half.”

Trump’s statement that a border wall would cut the nation’s crime rate — and “drug problem” — in half is simply laughable. There is no evidence to suggest that is the case. Most undocumented immigrants do not illegally cross the southern border, undocumented immigrants do not commit crimes at a rate higher than U.S. citizens, and drugs flow through the border mostly through legal crossing points.
"Thousands of children are being exploited by ruthless coyotes and vicious cartels and gangs.”

Here’s an example of where the president or his aides appear to have responded to our fact checks. No government statistic tracks children smuggled in by bad actors, “coyotes” or drug gangs, and for this speech, Trump has altered his usual claim that “last month alone, 20,000 minors were smuggled into the United States.” Now the number is fuzzier, and he no longer says “smuggled” but uses a weaker “exploited.” Trump previously referred to Customs and Border Protection’s number for family-unit apprehensions and unaccompanied minors. But we have pointed out that it’s wrong to describe it as a statistic that represents children being smuggled into the country. Trump appears to be acknowledging there are no firm numbers for how many parents might have hired a smuggler, coyote or gang member — though there is no evidence that the figure would be “thousands.”
Claims about foreign policy (900) and trade (854) rank second and third, followed by claims about the economy (790) and jobs (755). But there’s also a grab-bag category of “miscellaneous” (899), which includes misleading attacks on the media or people the president perceives as enemies.

By our count, there were only 82 days — or about 11 percent of the time — on which we recorded no claims. These were often days when the president golfed.

But there were also 74 days, or about 10 percent of his presidency, in which Trump made more than 30 claims. These were often days when he held campaign-style rallies, riffing without much of a script.

Trump has made many misleading claims about the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election, claiming 192 times a variation of the statement that it was a hoax perpetuated by Democrats. The CIA, the FBI and the National Security Agency had announced that they had “high confidence” that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign to influence the election, with a clear preference for Trump. Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III was appointed by Trump’s Justice Department, and the congressional committees investigating the matter have been headed by Republicans.

Trump repeated 127 times the falsehood about securing the biggest tax cut in U.S. history, even though Treasury Department data shows it would rank eighth. And 126 times, he has falsely claimed that the United States has lost money on trade deficits. Countries do not “lose” money on trade deficits. A trade deficit simply means that people in one country are buying more goods from another country than people in the second country are buying from the first country. Trade deficits are also affected by macroeconomic factors, such as currencies, economic growth and savings and investment rates.

MSNBC’s Ali Velshi didn’t mince words after President Donald Trump insisted on Friday that his proposed border wall was already under construction, lambasting the “lying” president for living in a fantasyland in which he “can do whatever he wants to do” without any input from Congress.

“That is the president of the United States lying again about a wall. Let me, please, just tell you what’s actually going on,” Velshi began. “It’s just an absolute provable lie.”

Velshi came armed for bear, offering viewers a thoroughly detailed description of the “1954 miles of border between the United States and Mexico.”

“As of February, there will be 14 new miles of wall, that’s been authorized by Congress,” he said. “But when the president says ‘we’re building walls, there’s walls going up, there’s new wall going up,’ I just need you all to understand, this is an absolute provable lie.”

He added that even if there was any construction going on, that in itself “would be illegal because it’s not actually authorized by Congress.”

“As much as Donald Trump thinks he can do whatever he wants to do,” Velshi sneered, “you can’t actually build a wall between Mexico and the United States without appropriations from the Congress of the United States.

Fact checking Trump's CPAC speech: A 2-hour talk with a dizzying number of falsehoods

President Donald Trump uttered a dizzying number of false statements in his epically long weekend speech, to an audience that didn't seem to mind at all.

He got the unemployment rate wrong. He misstated his winning margin in the election. He reprised some of his most frequently told fictions and dusted off old ones, even going back to the size of his inauguration crowd.

A look at some of his words in his two-hour-plus speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday:

Unemployment
TRUMP: "We're down to 3.7 percent unemployment, the lowest number in a long time."

THE FACTS: The unemployment rate is 4 percent. It was 3.7 percent in September.

Diversity visas
TRUMP: On the diversity visa lottery program: "They send us the people they don't want."

THE FACTS: A persistent falsehood . "They," meaning other countries, do not select citizens for the U.S. program. Foreigners decide on their own to apply for it. They must meet education or skills benchmarks to apply and those who are tentatively selected through the lottery must pass background checks before being confirmed.

Trump attributed similar characteristics to migrant caravans from Central America, suggesting governments try to get rid of their bad people by putting them in caravans for the U.S. Again, migrants are self-selected, not told to march to the U.S.

Russia investigation
TRUMP: Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigative team has "13 of the angriest Democrats in the history of our country."

THE FACTS: Mueller is a longtime Republican and party affiliation cuts both ways — or no way at all — in the varied background of the team. Some have donated campaign money to Democrats. The team is not known to be particularly or historically angry.

Crowd size
TRUMP on what he considers false reporting about his crowd sizes: *"They did the same thing at our big inauguration speech. You take a look at those crowds. ...We had a crowd, I've never seen anything like it. ... There were people (from) the Capitol down to the Washington Monument."

THE FACTS: The National Park Service released dozens of photos of the crowd gathered for his inauguration ceremony and it was clear from them that crowds did not extend to the Washington Monument from the Capitol. Large swaths of empty space were visible on the National Mall.

The park service also released photos from President Barack Obama's two inaugurations, showing that his 2009 event far outstripped the number of people who attended Trump's inauguration.

It released the photos in response to news media requests made through the * Freedom of Information Act after Trump and his aides accused news organizations of framing or timing photos and video to make it look like not many people came.

James Comey
TRUMP: "Every single Democrat said Comey should be fired" for his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails late in the campaign. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer "called for his resignation many times."

THE FACTS: Not true. Democrats did not universally — or even broadly — call for Comey to be fired despite their anger over his decision to go public before Election Day with news that the FBI had renewed its investigation of Clinton's handling of her emails. Several Democratic lawmakers did want him out, but they were a distinct minority.

Schumer said he had lost confidence in Comey but did not urge his removal, telling Bloomberg News he wanted to speak with the FBI chief "to restore my faith." The House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi, also held off on asking for Comey to step down, while musing: "Maybe he's not in the right job." Trump fired him months later.

Green New Deal
TRUMP: "No planes, no energy. ...Perhaps nothing is more extreme than the Democrats' plan to completely take over American energy, and completely destroy America's economy through their new $100 trillion dollar Green New Deal. ...It would end air travel."

THE FACTS: He's ignoring the actual provisions of the plan, which would not ban air travel or end traditional sources of energy. The plan, backed by some liberal Democrats but greeted cautiously or opposed by others in the party, does call for a drastic drop in greenhouse-gas emissions from fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas.

Trump is extrapolating from a fact sheet that initially accompanied the plan, then was disavowed and withdrawn by its sponsors. It proposed building high-speed rail at a scale "where air travel stops becoming necessary."

2016 ELECTION
TRUMP, on his Electoral College win: "We didn't get to 270. We got 306."

THE FACTS: Trump misstates the Electoral College vote in his 2016 presidential race against Democrat Hillary Clinton. The official count was 304 to 227, according to an Associated Press tally of the electoral votes in every state.

China trade
TRUMP: "We've lost so much money with China — $500 billion a year. And on trade, it's such a disaster. It's $507 billion a year. China — just one country. We lose with everybody, almost. But China is one country — $507 billion, for many years."

THE FACTS: He's off by several hundred billion dollars on the trade deficit with China . Trump typically ignores one part of a trading relationship, services, and considers only the other part, goods. Even by that measure, he's wrong. On goods alone, the U.S. ran a trade deficit of $382 billion with China last year, not $507 billion. That was up from nearly $376 billion in 2017.

The U.S. is strong on services and ran a $40 billion surplus with China on that form of trade in 2017. So the actual trade deficit with China that year was $335 billon.

Health care
TRUMP: "We have some great private coverage. And we have initiated some incredible plans, like the new cooperative plan, where you get better insurance than Obamacare for a fraction of the cost."

THE FACTS: He's glossing over the limitations of his administration's expanded health care options , which involve both short term and association plans. They offer lower premiums than comprehensive plans such as those under the Affordable Care Act but cover less.

Short-term plans don't have to take people with medical conditions or provide benefits such as coverage for maternity, mental health, prescription drugs and substance abuse treatment. Association health plans do have to accept people with pre-existing medical conditions, but they don't have to cover the full menu of 10 "essential" kinds of benefits required by Obamacare.

Gary Claxton of the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation says short-term plans may turn out to be more costly than Trump administration officials suggest. The plans now cover up to 90 days, but if insurers expand them to offer up to 36 months' coverage, the companies will be taking on more risk. "You'll have to pay more up front because there's a longer time during which you could get sick," he said.

Midterm elections
TRUMP: "We were given no credit. I can't go and campaign for all of the people in the House. There's too many."

TRUMP, on his endorsement of Florida candidate for governor, Ron DeSantis: "I said, 'Ron, Don't make me do this, Ron.' 'Sir, I can win.' Alright, Ron, here we go. Because I know if he loses — which almost never happens when I endorse someone, almost never. Only one time, that was because it was done in the middle of the day of the election... But we very rarely lose."

THE FACTS: Trump is wrong to suggest that almost every candidate he endorsed and campaigned for in the November midterm elections — except for perhaps one — won.

Two Republicans whom Trump strongly backed in their Senate races — Montana's Matt Rosendale and West Virginia's Patrick Morrisey — lost to Democratic Sens. Jon Tester and Joe Manchin, respectively. Trump had visited Montana four times and West Virginia three times to rally voters. Trump also campaigned for two other Senate losers: incumbent Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada and Leah Vukmir in Wisconsin.

In the House, Republican Rep. Jason Lewis lost his race in Minnesota to Democrat Angie Craig, whom he had defeated by 2 percentage points in 2016. Trump endorsed Lewis and campaigned for him.

Veterans
TRUMP, on the Choice program for veterans: "I got that approved after 44 years of being unable to get it approved for our veterans."

THE FACTS: False. Congress approved the private-sector Veterans Choice health program in 2014 and President Barack Obama signed it into law. Trump is expanding it .

TRUMP: "We are taking care of our veterans like they have never been taken care of before. We just got them Choice so they can now go see a doctor. Now they can go see a doctor instead of waiting on line for weeks and weeks and weeks."

THE FACTS: Veterans still must wait for weeks.

While it's true the VA recently announced plans to expand eligibility for veterans in the Veterans Choice program, it remains limited due in part to uncertain money and longer waits.

The program currently allows veterans to see doctors outside the VA system if they must wait more than 30 days for an appointment or drive more than 40 miles to a VA facility. Under new rules to take effect in June, veterans will have that option for a private doctor if their VA wait is only 20 days (28 for specialty care) or their drive is only 30 minutes.

But the expanded Choice eligibility may do little to provide immediate help.

That's because veterans often must wait even longer for an appointment in the private sector. Last year, then-Secretary David Shulkin said VA care is "often 40 percent better in terms of wait times" compared with the private sector. In 2018, 34 percent of all VA appointments were with outside physicians, down from 36 percent in 2017.

Choice came into effect after some veterans died while waiting months for appointments at the Phoenix VA medical center.

Shutdown
TRUMP: "I flew to Iraq — the first time I left the White House, because I stayed at the White House for months and months because I wanted the Democrats to get back from their vacations from Hawaii and these other places."

THE FACTS: Trump actually left the White House plenty of times during the "months and months" surrounding the partial government shutdown that began Dec. 22.

Besides his trip to Iraq and Germany on Dec. 26-27, Trump traveled to the Mexican border town of McAllen, Texas, on Jan. 10. On Jan. 14, he also went to New Orleans to address the American Farm Bureau. He's left the White House during the five-week shutdown for meetings at Camp David and the Capitol.

Shortly before the shutdown began, he traveled to Philadelphia to watch the Army-Navy football game (Dec. 8), visited Kansas City for a law enforcement conference (Dec. 7), attended former President George H.W. Bush's funeral at the Washington National Cathedral (Dec. 5), participated in the G-20 summit in Argentina in late November; and hosted "Make America Great Again" rallies in Mississippi with Senate candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith (Nov. 26). He hosted a dinner on Thanksgiving at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

They just want Trump beat in 2020, but if the economy keeps going like it is, that might be a tough thing to do.

Most Trumpers know their man lies. They don't care because they want to believe his lies. They want to believe that their problems are caused by non whites, Jews, and liberals, rather than by their glaring deficiencies. Their slogan "Jews won't replace us." exposes what they fear.

Trump Is Now Averaging Nearly 22 False Or Misleading Claims A Day: Report
He’s getting worse, according to a Washington Post analysis.

President Donald Trump’s habit of spreading misinformation is worsening, eroding his already minimal relationship with facts, according to a new Washington Post analysis.

The newspaper’s Fact Checker database shows Trump’s record of false or misleading claims has topped 9,000 since Inauguration Day. This year’s average of almost 22 per day surpasses his 16.5-per-day average in 2018, and dwarfs his first-year record of nearly six per day.

Trump gave a powerful boost to his average by dishing out more than 100 fishy statements during his two-hour Political Conservative Action Convention speech on Saturday. Among other things, he touted inflated data related to immigration and job creation, smeared special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigative team, claimed the Green New Deal “would end air travel” and mischaracterized the visa lottery program.

But Trump’s record had been deteriorating even before that fusillade of falsehoods. His deceptive claims rose sharply in the months leading up to the 2018 midterm elections and have continued to rise steadily, according to the Post.

The president’s most repeated unfounded claim, used more than 200 times, is his “Witch Hunt” bashing of the Mueller probe. He rekindled the attack on Sunday via Twitter, alleging “harassment” and presenting himself as “an innocent man being persecuted by some very bad, conflicted & corrupt people in a Witch Hunt that is illegal.”

Other frequent subjects of Trump falsehoods are his statements on the U.S.-China trade deficit and his downright false claim to have been responsible for the biggest tax reforms in the nation’s history.
