Well, no one sat down and invented God in his current (Christian) format, that story obviously evolved from earlier, simpler explanations of reality through God(s). I don't know who first sat down and wondered HOW the sun travels across the sky every day, and decided some super-powerful God-creature was obviously carrying it, but yeh, some caveman did. Of course, the story evolving into it's current version is a process of people changing it slightly (or not so slightly, i.e. the Romans mashing Christianity and Paganism together), so every time something was changed or added that little part was invented by whoever made the change.

I don't mean to pick on you in particular but I never understood how someone could be religious, believe everything a book or chaplain tells them with no proof or evidence, just faith but then decide that a few rules do not apply because it doesn't "feel good."

I my mind you have to come to the determination that a religion is true, and do everything they tell you to do if you don't want to go to hell. Or you have to come to the determination that those people do not have some special connection with god and you have to ignore them and just try to be a good person.
