Push To Reinstate 1994 Assault Weapon Ban Gaining Momentum

OK if you're looking for hints about which way anti-gun forces are headed I think you can bet the first effort will be to get the 1994 ban on assault weapons reinstated and everything in it. Reading that ban would pretty much tell us what their next move is going to be.

The reason I think that is because its something that is pretty simple for the general public to understand, familiar, and we've had it before. Those are all politically expedient things and when they couple that with Rep Gabriel Giffords and a few other incidences they can make a very emotionally packed argument. And don't think they won't.

This is also something Mexico is screaming for because the drug cartels are getting most their guns from the US. So there is another point.

And finally leave it to Jon Stewart to sucker Bill O'Reilly and Fox News into the debate (picture O'Reilly with his pants pulled down around his ankles) on O'Reilly's own show.

The whole show was about the poet that was invited to the White House who O'Reilly claimed glorified a "cop Killer." But near the end of the show Stewart managed to slip in there that one thing they could all agree on is cop killing is a terrible thing. So instead of just complaining about poets that may or may not glorify it, why doesn't O'Reilly and Fox News joint him in efforts to get the assualt weapons off the streets that are actually killing the cops.

Stewart actually mentioned the 1994 ban (which I actually support just to keep the record straight) and O'Reilly was caught off guard at least to appear he agreed.

Few seem to understand that machine guns, those guns that discharge more than one round with a single trigger pull, have been against federal law for over 70yrs. They are illegal today and will be illegal tomorrow regardless of whether or not this ban is reinstated.

That '90s era ban was a joke. It was completely focused on ACCESSORIES that attach to the gun, not the gun itself.

The legal (semi-automatic) version of the scary looking AK-47 was still legal under that ban. By putting a certain type of stock on it (which didnt affect usage) or taking out the 5rd clip and putting in a 15rd clip or by adding a flash suppressor on it ...THEN it was considered illegal.

Same gun, same rate of fire, same weight and no easier to conceal ...but suddenly it was illegal.

Pointless laws suck.

You are absolutely right about that but its not the gun they were after, even though the image of the very same gun the communists have used against us since world war II made a great selling point. But what they were really after was the high capacity clips and I'm all for that myself.

Now I can hear you in advance saying that passing laws against them won't solve anything because they will still be sold and possessed illegally (especially at gun shows) or all you have to do is tape two 15 shot clips together and its a simple matter of flipping the clip over and locking and loading in a fraction of a second for another 15 shots.

But I will point to you that you do not see wanna be mountain men wearing feathers from protected birds anymore and in nearly every state I know of you're required to have a plug in your shot gun so you can't load more than 4 shells and I don't know anyone who takes the plug out of their shot gun or saws a shotgun off anymore. So laws, enforcement, and confiscation does work.

Endangered wildlife protection is not part of the law, their protection is legally assured by other laws.

Shotgun plugs are only required if hunting and sawing off a shotgun is just like a fully automatic weapon ...been illegal for decades.

So it's basically a law that bans high capacity magazines. We can count on our fingers how many times high capacity magazines have impacted a crime and i doubt any of them would have been prevented by another law.

 

And I assure you if federal agents can show up at Mountain Man Rendezvous and confiscate the feathers right off their hats and heads they can federal agents to gun shows and other places and confiscate clips.

And as you point out the laws against sawed off shotguns and limiting the number of shot gun shells even if its a state law instead of a federal law have been working for decades.

But even if the law is passed and there's still thousands of high capacity clips out there that's better than millions and way better than allowing some sick fuck to go in a store and just by one.

Here's another thing that kind of jumps out at me about your sources. After guiding enough "hunters" after awhile you could not only tell how helpless some guy was with his rifle but also how impotent he was in real life just by the rifle he showed up with. And the larger caliber it was, the more automatic it was, and the more shells it held, the more helpless and impotent they were and thought some how a gun would compensate for that.

I think you'd be one of those guys I eventually just took the gun away from and didn't let them handle it again until we were on top of their game. Then I'd unload it and make them carry it back.
