The cable news networks, other than Fox of course, have been covering the Gaetz case but it takes a lot for the major networks to start covering it in their evening news broadcasts. But it finally broke out last night because Gaetz's ex girlfriend finally flipped on him. And she was present at many of the sex parties and also recorded him trying to get her to lie to the feds.

Which is what they were waiting for. They all know what's going on and how the case is progressing but shy away from reporting on it until they know they have enough solid information indictments are coming.

Rep. Matt Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend gave testimony Wednesday to a federal grand jury investigating him for sex crimes, a major development that suggests the Department of Justice may be moving closer to indicting him.

The ex-girlfriend, whose name is being withheld by NBC News to respect her privacy, has been in talks for months with prosecutors to receive an immunity deal. Under a possible deal, she would avoid prosecution for obstruction of justice in return for testifying in an investigation into whether Gaetz in 2017 had sex with a 17-year-old female for money and whether months later he and others violated a federal law prohibiting people for paying for prostitutes overseas.

Legal sources familiar with the case say Gaetz is being investigated for three distinct crimes: Sex trafficking the 17-year-old; violating the Mann Act, which prohibits taking prostitutes across state lines; and obstructing justice.

Gaetz, R-Fla., has never been charged with any crime and has denied all accusations, saying he never paid for sex and never had sex with a minor when he was an adult. The firebrand conservative has called the federal investigation into him a DOJ “witch hunt.”

The attorney for Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend, Tim Jansen, declined comment about the case Wednesday, when he was spotted by an NBC News reporter entering the federal courthouse in Orlando with his client. A Department of Justice spokesman declined comment. Gaetz did not respond to a request for comment.

The investigation into Gaetz has lasted for more than a year and began when a former friend and ally of his, former Seminole County tax collector Joel Greenberg, was charged with a host of crimes — from falsely smearing a political rival as a pedophile to cheating taxpayers in a cryptocurrency scheme to sex-trafficking the same 17-year-old that Gaetz is now under investigation for having had sex with for money.

Greenberg has agreed to plead guilty to six of the charges against him and is cooperating with federal investigators, NBC News has previously reported.

He has pleaded guilty to charges of identity theft, stalking, wire fraud, conspiracy to bribe a public official and sex trafficking of a minor.

According to one source familiar with the case, the alleged sex-trafficking victim had told investigators at one point that Gaetz had had sex with her.

That's how MSNBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos is describing federal prosecutors' decision to target Matt Gaetz's ex-girlfriend as they investigate whether the Florida GOP congressman sex-trafficked a minor.

Earlier this week, NBC News reported that Gaetz's ex-girlfriend testified before a grand jury as part of a possible immunity deal in the case, calling it "a major development that suggests the Department of Justice may be moving closer to indicting him."

On Friday, Cevallos wrote that while we don't know details about the testimony of Gaetz's ex-girlfriend, "we do know ... that if the target of a federal investigation is going to be romantically involved, prosecutors would prefer it be with a girlfriend rather than a wife."

"And they’d always prefer to deal with an ex-girlfriend than a current girlfriend," Cevallos wrote.

He explained that federal courts recognize two important marital privileges.

"Either spouse may assert the confidential marital communications privilege to prevent the other one from testifying about private discussions they have during the marriage," Cevallos wrote. "Additionally, the spousal testimonial privilege permits one spouse to refuse to testify against the other during the marriage."

But the privileges — which have their roots in "medieval" views that didn't recognize women as separate entities from their husbands — don't apply to girlfriends.

"It doesn’t matter if the girlfriend has lived with the boyfriend for years," Cevallos wrote. "It doesn’t matter if they have kids together. A girlfriend is not a wife — but she is a potential gold mine for prosecutors."

According to Cevallos, the only thing prosecutors like more than a cooperating girlfriend is a cooperating ex-girlfriend — but that preference is based on "human nature" and not "rules of evidence."

"An ex-girlfriend usually ex-likes the ex-boyfriend being investigated," he wrote. "Even better for the investigators, sometimes the ex-girlfriend hates the ex-boyfriend with a seething passion. It’s a lot easier for a witness to incriminate someone if they already hate their guts."

According to NBC senior national political reporter Marc Caputo, the likelihood that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) will be indicted has increased after his former girlfriend landed an immunity deal and testified to authorities.

Speaking with MSNBC host Alex Witt, Caputo -- who broke the story about the former paramour coming in to testify -- said there appears to be movement in the Florida investigation of the controversial lawmaker over charges he may have paid underaged girls for sex or suborned obstruction of justice afdterward.

"When this broke, the ex-girlfriend was talking to another woman who was talking to prosecutors that felt the woman may have recorded the call and may have patched in Matt Gaetz at the time and prosecutors suspect he tried to elicit or entice or suborn obstruction of justice and his ex-girlfriend may have participated in that," Caputo told the host. "That was the basis of her getting an immunity deal; 'don't charge me for this and I'll tell you the things you want to know.'"

"Exactly what she told them is key but what's important to note here is that she's an important bridge that unlocks the case or unstalls it," he added. "It was stuck in neutral. Now the case is clearly going forward. I can't promise he's going to be indicted but the chances are higher."

"The Daily Show's" Jordan Klepper was at it again, asking MAGA fans questions during a rally for the insurrectionists in prison. After, Klepper went to Capitol Hill for a press conference by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) who spends a lot of time on cable news shows.

According to Klepper, Gaetz wasn't willing to answer his questions.

"You know, I'm shocked," said Klepper. "The guy usually likes cameras, and, in fact, I was catching up to him after a stunt he pulled just outside of the Capitol. And usually, he wants those cameras around. You'd expect there to be some follow-up questions. Sadly, he didn't get a chance to hear all my other thoughtful, well-researched inquiries. He was more interested in talking about the CIA and the FBI and the issues they had with Jan. 6. But, I don't know. If the world has any justice, perhaps Matt Gaetz will get his one-on-one time with the FBI soon."

Klepper was referencing a former girlfriend of Gaetz who testified to the grand jury that the congressman paid for sex with underage girls. That fact also prompted Klepper to ask Gaetz if he was attracted to childish things due to the grand jury testimony.

"Hey, Matt Gaetz, if you're going to reenact the events of Jan. 6 who is going to take a sh*t in the rotunda, and also who's going to make the gallows?" Klepper asked. "Isn't that a little bit childish or is that what attracts you to this?"

Prosecutors granted immunity to an ex-girlfriend of Representative Matt Gaetz before she testified last week in front of a federal grand jury hearing evidence in the investigation of the congressman, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Gaetz has been under investigation to determine if he violated sex trafficking laws and obstructed justice in that probe. Gaetz has previously denied all wrongdoing, and has said he has never paid for sex nor had sex with an underage girl.

The woman, who CBS News is not naming to protect her privacy, testified in front of a federal grand jury in Orlando last Wednesday. She is viewed as a potential key witness, according to two sources familiar with the investigation. One of the sources said she has information related to the investigation of both the sex trafficking and obstruction allegations.

"This may be a willing participant who has a smart lawyer who sought an immunity deal from the government," said former prosecutor and CBS News legal analyst Rikki Kleiman. "The government does not give immunity blindly, they know what they're getting in exchange."

Isabelle Kirshner, an attorney for Gaetz, told CBS News in a statement last week that "we have seen no credible basis for a charge against Congressman Gaetz. We remain steadfast in our commitment to challenge any allegations with the facts and law."

A source told CBS News last week that as a part of an obstruction probe, investigators are looking into whether Gaetz had a phone call with the ex-girlfriend, and another woman, who was already a witness in the federal investigation.

Multiple sources told CBS News that the ex-girlfriend and the other woman traveled to the Bahamas with Gaetz in 2018, along with a third woman with whom Gaetz was in a sexual relationship. That third woman was 18 at the time of the Bahamas trip, but investigators are also looking into whether she was 17 when the sexual relationship began.

Investigators are trying to determine if any of the women were paid and were illegally trafficked across state or international lines for the purpose of sex with the congressman.

Two sources familiar with the matter told CBS News it was Joel Greenberg, a former Florida county tax collector and associate of Gaetz's, who introduced Gaetz to that woman when she was 17 years old. Greenberg pleaded guilty in May 2021 to six federal charges, including trafficking of a minor.

Reacting to a report from CBS News that the former girlfriend of Matt Gaetz has been granted immunity in return for testifying before a grand jury looking into allegations that the Florida Republican violated sex trafficking laws and obstructed justice, legal experts and law enforcement officials took to social media to point out the news should have Gaetz very concerned.

According to CBS, "The woman, who CBS News is not naming to protect her privacy, testified in front of a federal grand jury in Orlando last Wednesday. She is viewed as a potential key witness, according to two sources familiar with the investigation. One of the sources said she has information related to the investigation of both the sex trafficking and obstruction allegations."

That led former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance to caution, "It's never a good sign for the target when a key witness gets immunity to testify in front of the grand jury.

Former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi taunted the Republican House member by writing, "Ask not for whom the clock ticks; the clock ticks for you."



MSNBC legal contributor added some helpful context by tweeting, "Remember: it only takes 12 members of a grand jury to issue an indictment…" while sharing a link to the CBS story.

Putting it in even a more broader context, Florida attorney Daniel Uhlfelder tweeted, "Matt Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend got immunity from federal prosecution to testify against him in a sex trafficking investigation and he is still on House Judiciary Committee. That must be corrected immediately."

Fellow Florida attorney Aaron Parnas wrote, "This is bad news for Gaetz and shows that the investigation is progressing quickly towards a possible indictment," before later adding, "The federal government does not grant immunity to everyone, and will only do so for important witnesses needed to secure an indictment or a conviction. The fact that Gaetz's ex-girlfriend has been granted immunity to testify shows that an indictment is likely coming soon."

"Matt has reason to be seriously concerned, but we knew that already," contributed attorney Elizabeth C. McLaughlin.
