Matt Gaetz's surprising reaction to Hunter Biden verdict spawns MAGA conspiracy theories

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), a longtime antagonist of President Joe Biden, surprised many of his followers on Tuesday by gently speaking out against Hunter Biden's conviction on multiple gun-related charges.

"The Hunter Biden gun conviction is kinda dumb tbh," wrote Gaetz on X.

Given how Gaetz has reliably been a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, his criticisms of the Biden verdict were surprising.

In fact, many of Gaetz's followers believed that Joe Biden deliberately sacrificed his own son so that he could then take down his true target in Trump.

‘MIA MTG’: Why Marjorie Taylor Greene has no district offices

"This is the perfect timing for left, what a coincidence!" wrote one. "Now they can say there is no two-tiered justice system, avoid Hunter being charged for his more serious crimes leading to his father, and no jail time!"

"It’s all for show…" wrote another.

Others believed that the gun conviction was done simply to cover up far more serious purported Biden crimes.

"So many bigger crimes proven on that laptop," claimed a Gaetz follower.

Some of Gaetz's more liberal critics, however, were quick to claim that the Florida Republican was only upset by the verdict because it makes it much harder to argue that Biden rigged the entire Department of Justice against him.

"The imbalance here is that Democrats are pretty firmly against committing financial crimes to manipulate elections, whereas Republicans don't like impiety towards their death god who must be sated with the blood of children," wrote Twitter user Jack Walsh.

"Republicans may/are going to attempt to downplay Hunter’s conviction as 'dumb' because they know this has the potential to backfire on them AND because it shatters their 'unfair judicial system' narrative," wrote Drexel Heard.

"The right is now defending Hunter because they have made their bed with a convicted criminal so now all criminals are AkShUaLlY innocent," argued another Gaetz follower.

We can understand. For liberals, you see, a single example can prove a universal.

For example, a racist cop, or racist pundit means AMERICA is racist.

And a single example of the justice system convicting one of their own must prove that the DOJ/FBI is not weaponized.

    That's how simpletons think.

'This is Soviet’: Matt Gaetz cries foul over 'new frivolous' ethics probes

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), already facing an open Ethics panel probe into his alleged sexual misconduct and illicit drug use with a minor, claims there are "new frivolous investigations" being opened to scrutinize him even further.

"This is Soviet,” he blasted in a social media post and first reported by Politico.

The House Ethics Committee earlier this year subpoenaed information from the Department of Justice linked to its ongoing investigation into Gaetz, the outlet reported, citing an anonymous source's confirmation.

House investigators apparently sought to pore over documents and key records to aid their investigation into allegations that Gaetz was engaged in sexual relations with a minor.

The House Ethics Committee's investigation of Gaetz is buttressed by a witness's testimony who said she saw the Florida pol at a cocaine-fueled party attended by a then-17-year-old girl rumored to have had a sexual relationship with the Florida congressman.

That 2017 gathering was also reported to involve the party drug MDMA.

In 2021, allegations were brought against Gaetz for having "engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use and accepted impermissible gifts under House rules, among other allegation."

Criminal charges were dropped by the feds, and Gaetz has maintained his innocence.

Gaetz claimed the House Ethics Committee has "closed four probes into me" which he noted "emerged from lies intended solely to smear me."

He continued: "Instead of working with me to ban Congressional stock trading, the Ethics Committee is now opening new frivolous investigations.

"They are doing this to avoid the obvious fact that every investigation into me ends the same way: my exoneration."

He blamed one source: former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

McCarthy, he said, "showed them the man, and they are now trying to find the crime."

Gaetz submitted that he works for "Northwest Floridians who won't be swayed by this nonsense and McCarthy and his goons know it."

Gaetz was instrumental in seeking McCarthy's unceremonious ouster from the speakership.

Eight Republicans including Gaetz joined all the Democrats to eject McCarthy from the speakership by a motion to vacate the chair resulting in weeks of chaos that finally culminated with the selection of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) to replace him.

Gaetz has said it was because McCarthy broke deals he made with the far-right House Freedom Caucus.

Matt Gaetz Ethics Committee sexual misconduct and drug use probe expands

The House Ethics Committee has expanded its ongoing investigation into U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), releasing a rare statement revealing it is now investigating the Florida Republican congressman for allegations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, accepting improper gifts, dispensing special privileges and favors to individuals, and obstruction.

The statement detailed the direction of its probe while announcing it has issued dozens of subpoenas and spoken with numerous individuals. It also announced certain allegations will not continue to be investigated.

The bipartisan Committee adds that "at this time" it "will take no further action" on allegations Gaetz "may have shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe or improper gratuity."

No reasons were given for expanding the probe nor for appearing to step back from pursuing certain aspects.

Under Trump Attorney General Bill Barr, Gaetz, a top Trump follower, had been under federal investigation for alleged sex trafficking of a minor and alleged illicit drug use.

"Investigators are examining whether Mr. Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws," The New York Times had reported in 2021, citing unnamed sources. "A variety of federal statutes make it illegal to induce someone under 18 to travel over state lines to engage in sex in exchange for money or something of value. The Justice Department regularly prosecutes such cases, and offenders often receive severe sentences."

The House Ethics Committee had also opened an investigation in 2021, but on Tuesday noted it had paused that probe at the request of the Dept. of Justice, but "reauthorized" its investigation after DOJ withdrew its request.

"On April 9, 2021, the Committee announced it had initiated a review into allegations that Representative Matt Gaetz may have engaged in sexual misconduct and/or illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gift, in violation of House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct," the Ethics Committee said in Tuesday's statement.

Punchbowl News co-founder John Bresnahan characterized the Committee's statement as "very unusual," and adds it "ays Gaetz hasn’t cooperated with the investigation."

Despite "difficulty in obtaining relevant information from Representative Gaetz and others," the Ethics Committee revealed it "has spoken with more than a dozen witnesses, issued 25 subpoenas, and reviewed thousands of pages of documents in this matter."

The Committee notes that Gaetz maintains his innocence. It often indicates an expected date for resolution, updates, or further announcements but did not on Tuesday.

HuffPost's Jennifer Bendery called it "an unusual public statement."

"Apparently aware the ethics committee would be making a statement about its investigation, Gaetz claimed on social media on Monday afternoon that he’s been the subject of four committee probes and all were closed," HuffPost reported Tuesday.

On Monday Gaetz targeted former GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

“'This is Soviet,' Gaetz said of the latest ethics investigation," HuffPost noted. “'Kevin McCarthy showed them the man, and they are now trying to find the crime.' "

In April, McCarthy declared he was no longer Speaker "because one person, a member of Congress, wanted me to stop an ethics complaint, because he slept with a 17-year old."

While McCarthy did not name Gaetz, the Florida congressman has denied that allegation and never been charged for it.

Also on Tuesday Noah Bookbinder, president of the government watchdog Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington (CREW), announced the organization is suing DOJ for "documents explaining why the Justice Dept. chose not to prosecute" Gaetz.

The despicables clearly consider Gaetz a threat to them for some reason.
    Wonder what that's all about?

Witness testifies that Matt Gaetz paid her for sex: report

The House Ethics Committee has reportedly obtained testimony from a witness who claims that she was paid for sex by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

ABC News reports that one witness specifically told the committee that Gaetz sent her money through the payment app Venmo that was in exchange for a sexual encounter.

Other witnesses have told the committee that they were "paid to attend parties that Gaetz also attended and that featured drugs and sex," ABC News reports.

Gaetz was long the subject of a Department of Justice probe over potential sex trafficking of an underage girl, although in the end the DOJ declined to bring charges against the Florida congressman.

According to ABC, the House Ethics Committee has now obtained records of Gaetz's Venmo payments, which could be key evidence against him.

"The committee has obtained Gaetz's Venmo records after issuing the company a subpoena," reports ABC. "During the DOJ investigation into Gaetz, public reporting, including by The Daily Beast, largely focused on Venmo records from [former Seminole County, Florida tax collector Joel] Greenberg, who according to his plea agreement used his account to "pay for commercial sex acts" with women he also introduced to others. The committee obtaining Gaetz's records, which ABC News has not seen, could help provide Congressional investigators with a roadmap for payments the Congressman may have made while he was friends with Greenberg."

If it was illegal to pay for sex, and the law was strictly enforced, no despicable would ever have sex again.
    Or be able to procreate.

Matt Gaetz drug and sex allegations 'should not be ignored': former GOP colleague

The constant "drip drip drip" of information about questions about Rep. Matt Gaetz's conduct filtering out of the House Ethics Committee should be cause for concern for both the Florida lawmaker and the Republican party he represents.

This past week it was revealed that the committee is continuing its inquiry into allegations that Gaetz paid for sex with underaged women and attended drug-fueled parties, and former Rep. Dave Jolly (R-FL) claimed that should be setting off alarms.

Writing for MSNBC, Jolly asserted the accusations "should not be ignored. For one thing, the various accusations have always been serious, many following him from his bachelor days as a Florida state legislator."

Noting the Republican majority-dominated committee is going where a previous DOJ investigation did not go, he explained "We do not know how the House Ethics Committee’s investigation will end. The committee’s potential actions range from closing the matter without comment to recommending censure or even expulsion from the House."

With that, he noted Gaetz's "angry denials' and pointed out that, if that sounds familiar, we are experiencing something completely similar to Donald Trump's legal travails.

"Their proven ability to offend norms, shatter convention and defy political gravity. Trump is literally a convicted criminal, and yet he is also a contender to again control the White House. Gaetz flexed his political might during the speaker debacle, and may now be eyeing a run for the Florida governorship in 2026," he wrote before continuing, "Today, Donald Trump is 78 years old. Matt Gaetz is 42. The GOP is truly in trouble if it allows a full transfer of power and momentum between this old and new guard. Hopefully, the House Ethics Committee will ensure justice is done, certainly if the allegations against Gaetz are confirmed. It’s been a depressing decade for the GOP."

    "Enough is enough," he added.
