Hush, I am very sorry to hear that you were raised in such a hostile environment. I guess I was very lucky to have been raised in an extended family that embraced our heritage and even spent a year being raised as a Choctaw youth. I was given to understand that all people were due the respect that they were willing to share with others. I will be very clear that my grandfather did not embrace all people and was a true southern democratic racist (in the 50's and 60's) but his biggest hatred was blacks, which given he was married to an Choctaw seemed very odd to me.

Ok Hush I'm just not going to attempt to dissect something this powerful.

So all I can tell you; is been there, done that, helped promote and practice the prejudice, discrimination (two different things) and inflict the picture of pain you paint.

Feelings run hard out here between the Native Americans and the non-natives near the Rocky Mountains because all of us wake up every morning and see the most beautiful country ever stole. And no matter how much we pretend that doesn't count these days. It does.

But for me I crossed the circles. I got propelled through them (long and spiritual story) until every time I turned around I was going out on the reservation to sweats or going back to college and two Native American Men became not my best friends as much as my only friends.

The problem though as you paint is its just not that simple. I came to know a lot more about the culture Native Americans and what was really happening on the reservation. I even learned to speak in silence. I saw how the "tribe" reacts to a toddler rushing out on the basketball court during a game. And when you see that you know these people have their hearts in the right places because its not how most communities react.

And I even reached the point where one time during a smoke break I announced to my two Native American friends; "I will be prejudiced no more forever." And for maybe the first time I'd ever seen it they both laughed. What they knew that I didn't is that this kind of prejudice is not only so common its so ingrained you think like that all the time and don't even know you are thinking it.

Yes that hurts. And I am sorry for that and the pain I myself inflicted.

But its never that simple Hush. Its just not.

But then I got to know my Native Americans Friends so well another thing I learned is the amount of prejudice directed at Native Americans by non-natives was nowhere as vicious, actually acted on, discriminatory, and at times deadly as the prejudices between the two tribes.

We all have different stories. But it is things like this that make us all human
