Psychiatrist explains Trump’s admiration for dictators: ‘It comes from the lack of proper parenting’

The fragile psychological state of President Donald Trump and his supporters was explained by a prominent forensic psychiatrist at the Yale University School of Medicine on Monday.

Dr. Bandy Lee was interviewed on “The Ralph Nader Hour” radio show.

Lee was the editor of the 2017 book The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, in which 27 mental health professionals weighed in on Trump.

“Dr. Lee, what do you make of his affinity for dictators around the world?” Nader asked. “He envies them, he praises them, he covers for them — and he even alienates some of the traditional allies we have in western Europe. What’s your take on that?”

“He’s a tyrant-wannabe himself,” Lee replied. “And of course he would be drawn to those who work the same way as he does, have the same desires and are actually more effective at realizing those desires.”

She broke down why Trump is so beloved by his base.

“It’s a complex psychological attraction that works like lock and key,” she explained.

“Most of the time when we think of tyrants or strongmen, we think of them as authority figures, but it’s actually a very submissive personality type, where they’re looking for an ideal figure who will satisfy their needs for someone who will take charge and someone they can follow,” she continued.

“It comes from the lack of proper parenting, but when you’re put in that position, like Donald Trump has been, you puff yourself up and claim that you are that figure, ‘the stable genius who is an expert at everything and only I can take care of all the problems.’ And then people in their wounded yearning for this type of figure are immediately attracted to such a person in ways that it would never work for a normal person,” Lee explained.

“Normal people don’t so yearn desperately for a strong leader that they don’t see through someone who is saying ‘I alone can fix it’ — that actually means ‘I’m being defective in some way’ because no person who is capable of fixing things would say that,” she said.

Trump’s severe mental impairments are now unleashing global catastrophes: psychiatrists

As predicted by leading mental health professionals several years ago, Donald Trump’s emotional and psychological collapse continues unabated. In his third year in office, the president has demonstrated through his public and private behavior that he is mentally unwell. The pressures of the impeachment process have only worsened Trump’s condition. There will be no bottom. Trump’s mental decompensation and associated downward spiral will only get worse. This is both a national and global crisis.

The newest low point in Donald Trump’s behavior arrived last Friday when he ordered the assassination of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani. The Trump administration claims that Soleimani was planning imminent attacks against the United States and therefore that killing him was an urgent necessity. Trump’s followers, most notably Vice President Mike Pence, have falsely tried to claim that Iran poses a dire threat to the U.S. and was somehow involved in the 9/11 attacks.

These pretexts are either verifiably untrue or implausible. Donald Trump apparently ordered the assassination of Soleimani — and the escalation to a de facto state of war between Iran and the U.S. — because he was afraid of looking “weak”.

The assassination of Soleimani is also a distraction from Trump’s impeachment and the ongoing torrent of incriminating information about the Ukraine scandal.

Trump continues to behave in a manner that would previously have been considered impossible for an American president. Over the course of several days, he has publicly threatened to commit war crimes by destroying Iranian cultural sites. Trump has also — via Twitter, as usual — threatened to attack Iran with “disproportionate force.” As a practical matter, he is threatening to order intentional large-scale attacks on civilian populations. That too would be a war crime.

Iran has retaliated for the killing of Soleimani by launching ballistic missiles at two airbases in Iraq where U.S. troops are stationed. At this writing, the number of American and Iraqi casualties, if any, is not known. The Iranians also issued a series of statements on Tuesday evening including one suggesting that they are willing to de-escalate and the missile attacks were a one-off response.

After Iran’s attack, Trump made the following announcement on Twitter:

All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning.

Trump has again shown that he lacks the maturity, temperament and intelligence, as well as the emotional and mental stability to lead the United States in a time of crisis.

In an effort to gain more insight into the Iran crisis, I asked a panel of the country’s leading mental health experts for their thoughts about what Trump’s recent behavior reveals about his psychological and emotional health. Their responses have been edited for clarity and length.

So this is where we are. America, once the good guy, may drag the world into war, maybe even world war, to quell the anxiety and rage of our mad king.

In February 2018, at a conference chaired by Tom Steyer at the National Press Club about President Trump’s psychological fitness to serve as commander in chief, a panel of mental health professionals (including myself) warned that under the stress of investigations into his misconduct, it was probable that Trump would make an impulsive catastrophic error on the world stage that could lead to war. That moment has arrived with the assassination of Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Why did we see it as almost inevitable?

As a malignant narcissist, when threatened, Trump must reassert his dominance over the world at all costs. And to a sadistic psychopath (one component of malignant narcissism), the collateral damage is not a cost but a bonus. As I said in 2018:

He has no empathy or concern for anybody but himself and so he will not care about the destruction that it will cause other people. In fact, because of his sadism, there’s a part of him that perversely seems to revel in causing chaos and destruction and making us all frightened all the time, but even more importantly, it will be irresistible for him because it will transform him from feeling like a hunted victim of this witch hunt to feeling like an omnipotently destructive victor.

It’s not just a political “wag the dog” scenario but a psychological one, meant to reverse his narcissistic panic in response to a fear of looking weak, exposed, damaged and disgraced by turning the tables, so he now seems newly powerful and frightening. In Donald Trump’s paranoia, he believes he is being persecuted by bad people, so killing some other bad people makes him feel better. And really isn’t that all that counts? Instead of being the defendant in the dock, now he is a toxic avenger — a hero!

I and a significant number of other experienced mental health professionals have written at length (for over two years) addressing the fact that Trump’s public behaviors are fully consistent with the presence of a severe personality disorder (malignant narcissism). Others have speculated regarding Trump’s cognitive state and possible deterioration, which requires formal neurological and neuro-psychological testing to determine if there is an applicable diagnosis.

However, at the current time, psychiatric and neurological diagnoses are irrelevant. The urgent issue is that we have a POTUS whose impaired decision-making, judgment and ethics have put our nation in grave danger — including, most recently, tweeting public threats to commit war crimes.

We have seen a consistent pattern of Trump beginning with a statement (or tweet) regarding his perception of a situation (a perception often inconsistent with verifiable facts) after which he proceeds to proposing and/or implementing a “necessary” course of action — yet there is no explication of any fact-based, logical analysis or thought processes that led from point A to point B. Trump does not appear to seek advice from “advisers” but only information regarding available reactive options, then unilaterally (ignoring the advice of experts) choosing a response without any indication of understanding, consideration or care regarding legality, ethics or consequences.

The irrationality of Trump’s immature, ego-driven and severely sadistic manner of impulsively choosing courses of action is an existential threat to our democracy, our Constitution, our country and our national security.

Assassinating the Iranian general is the Reichstag incident many of us have predicted Trump would create when under pressure. Like Hitler and other dictators, he needs to create the conditions for a war — in this case via a reprisal attack on the country — to rally his base and try to use support for an attacked America as a reason to support him personally.

Psychologically, the important point is that this act demonstrates, once again, that Donald Trump’s single goal is to benefit himself and his hold on power, regardless of the disastrous risks to follow for many Americans and other. Trump has no conscience about those other people. Indeed, if Trump does not succeed in causing a war this time, in the case of Iran, it is highly likely that he will try again before the 2020 election.

Those Republicans who have supported him up to this point are now faced with the moral imperative to remove him from office because of the fatal risks to America and the world that Donald Trump now presents because of his predicted incapacity to function safely under stress.

For four years now, my colleagues and I have been warning anyone who will listen that Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to the United States and indeed the world. His bizarre and reckless behaviors have been so numerous it is difficult to know where to begin anymore. He has shown unmistakable evidence of severe narcissism, sociopathy, hypomania and possibly even early cognitive decline. His decision to assassinate Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani is an even more egregious example of recklessness and a bizarre thought process.

There appears to be little to no thoughtful consideration of consequences, planning or reasonable consultation with Congress or world leaders. Unfortunately, most of us have become habituated to Trump’s constant barrage of impulsive and aggressive attacks towards others. They happen so frequently that we barely notice them anymore. While his bullying on Twitter can appear comical at times, an impulsive assassination of an Iranian leader has escalated his impulsivity to an entirely new level.

What is deeply unsettling about this impulsive attack against Iran is how serious the implications could be. There is a real chance that Trump is unleashing a massive attack/revenge/counterattack sequence that could end in a catastrophic conventional or nuclear exchange. I understand that many Americans would rather keep their heads in the sand rather than acknowledge the grave situation in which President Trump has again put us, yet it is now more crucial than ever that we stand up to this bully before he inflicts catastrophic damage.

At this point in our impending crisis with Iran, it’s again essential to illuminate the president’s character structure. Donald Trump has never left his either/or mentality, which has been how he functioned his entire life. You are bad or good, period. He was told since childhood by his father, a domestic tyrant in his own right, to be a “killer.” And Trump is a tortured sadist — a tortured torturer. A breaker of things.

Trump is dominated by fear. He is also dominated by paranoid anxiety about being convicted in the U.S. Senate for the high crimes and misdemeanors that led to his impeachment. Fear, more than anything, is “the thrust behind the knife, the fist, the blow to the head.” Fear of being found out to be lacking or small also plays a part in Trump’s lying. Thus he is driven by a need to recreate the feeling of infantile omnipotence. He tries desperately to get others to believe him, so they can share his feeling of being all-powerful. But with impeachment, Trump no longer lies to impress others or even to assert himself. His lies about the reasons behind the assassination to distract us from his impending Senate trial: Trump lies now to survive.

My second point is that Trump the builder is at heart Trump the destroyer. His loyalty to America is limited. Just ask Putin! His loyalty to the Constitution doesn’t exist; he has already been impeached. He has tweeted that he was giving notice to Congress that if Iran retaliates, the U.S. will strike back “perhaps in a disproportionate manner.” He doesn’t ask Congress; he gives notice to a weak handmaiden. With one tweet, Trump swept away any remnant of the separation of powers.

Since he has no loyalty to America, he feels he has nothing to lose by starting a war. Tragically, he answers the question I raised in my chapter on his malignant narcissism when I wrote, “Which prospect is likely more frightening to Donald Trump — revealing his tax returns or starting a nuclear war?”

Trump’s potential mental problems are ‘a public health emergency’: Yale psychiatrist tells critics

Saturday it was revealed that Yale University psychiatrist Bandy X. Lee is being sued by President Donald Trump’s lawyer Alan Dershowitz for saying he may have a shared psychosis with the president. While the lawsuit may not proceed in court, there’s a very real question about the burden psychiatrist and psychologists have when warning about the president’s instability.

In a Twitter thread Sunday, Lee explained that she complied by “the Goldwater rule” for 20 years, though, as a forensic psychiatrist, she wasn’t obligated to. As critics like Dershowitz assail Lee, she clapped back, saying that there is a “public health emergency” due to the president’s instability.

“If our political system were working and dangers were contained, the reasons for my speaking up would cease, and I would be able to go back to my own life, which is radically different than the one I am leading now,” Lee wrote.

She recalled the powerful speech from climate activist Greta Thunberg, who said that she fell into a deep depression because, if climate change was real, those in charge weren’t acting rationally. They were doing nothing, which meant she had no future.

“I find myself unable to continue my own routine work, for if the signs I see in the president were real (and there is no doubt now), and he has access to nuclear weapons as well as many other lesser powers, then those in charge are not acting rationally to save humanity,” Lee continued.

“Some say I have no place in this discussion as a health professional. If that is the case, can they possibly name a greater public health emergency? Especially as a mental health professional, as a violence expert, I cannot think of anything that is more my business right now,” she closed.”

When Lee explained Dershowitz’s “shared psychosis,” she said he “may” have it. That could be enough protection for Lee, particularly given Dershowitz is a public figure.

We can actually see this right here on our little forum. Trump supporters take on the characteristics of Trump. They flip flop from everything they said they believed in before. They promote delusions and already debunked conspiracy theories. They constantly lie. And they also constantly suspend disbelief and claim they support Trump even when he constantly contradicts himself.

Yale psychiatrist explains how Trump’s psychosis has spread to his rank-and-file supporters — and much of the GOP

The president’s personal lawyer and former New York City 0mayor Rudolph Giuliani wrote an opinion piece by the title, “The Supreme Court Should Step In to Rule this Impeachment Unconstitutional,” where the Washington Post reports him as donning the “constitutional scholar” cap in “very colorful terms.”

Just over a week ago, Giuliani had made the dramatic statement that he was prepared not only to testify at the president’s upcoming impeachment trial but would even try the case. Giuliani has mystified observers for some time, which is why I am responding to a request to analyze his words here.

First, allow me to remark on methodology. Ordinarily, I state that analyzing a public figure is complex, and have previously declined to comment on Kim Jong-un or Vladimir Putin. In order to offer a responsible analysis that is medically sound, an abundance of high-quality information is necessary.

Rarely do we have the amount that Donald Trump offers, with decades of candid interviews and clips; numerous collateral reports by close associates, many under sworn testimony; and direct, unfiltered, near-hourly reporting of thoughts (a full diagnosis needs more, although a personal examination is not the deciding issue, as it can in some cases be harmful in assessing personalities that deceive or charm).

With Giuliani, however, I can make an exception.

Power may corrupt ordinary individuals, but it radically transforms dangerously pathological figures beyond what people can imagine.

I can do so because, like many of Trump’s followers, he seems to be an extension of the president’s psychology. How is this possible? There can be a contagion of symptoms, as in the phenomenon of “shared psychosis,” further explained below. I also have some references on Giuliani as a long-term New Yorker that corroborate my assessment. Finally, I feel justified in sharing the findings because of the danger he poses (as a strong adherent to the original “Goldwater rule,” I am opposed to commenting frivolously on public figures unless they pose a danger to public health).

I have regularly been “translating” Trump and his followers as a public service, using my understanding of the president’s defense mechanisms, repeatedly validated against other data: whatever he says about others is very revealing about himself. I apply the same method for his followers because their shared psychosis, or the transmission of mental symptoms among close contacts over time, including via the media or the Internet, renders their psychological structure extremely similar.

Adopting Trump’s Delusions
Unlike Trump, I have closely interacted with many Trump supporters and can personally attest to their uniformity in many psychological respects. Especially when the primary pathology rests in a powerful figure, otherwise healthy people can adopt his cognitive distortions, delusions, and other symptoms as their own. My experience with multiple cases in state hospitals and among gangs in prisons, in my 22-year career as a forensic psychiatrist, has been impressive. Shared psychosis disappears just as dramatically when the contact is interrupted (we may consider Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen here).

Here is a sample “translation” of Giuliani’s words, or interpretation of what his subconscious may br telling us, from his opinion piece: “Republicans’ obsession from day one not to impeach President Donald J. Trump, without regard to substance or process, led us to change the grounds for our argument every couple of months. In doing so we have punted everything from Russian collusion to obstruction of justice, to quid pro quo, to bribery.”

Projecting Trump’s Criminality onto Biden
By offering to try the case several days ago, Giuliani revealed a grandiosity so high, he does not seem to notice how he often harms his client or reveals how corrupt he is willing to be by trying a case for which his client is defendant (and he potentially co-conspirator). When he said he would prosecute “as a racketeering case,” he was inadvertently “confessing” his and the president’s level of criminality by projecting it onto Joe Biden. He even narcissistically added that he “kind of invented” such prosecutions.

DC Report’s Editor-in-chief, investigative reporter David Cay Johnston, countered that Giuliani’s subordinates tried and won “the RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) cases Rudy claims credit for,” that other prosecutors won cases “years ahead of his subordinates,” and “the RICO law was the brainchild of Prof. G. Robert Blakey.”

This pattern is consistent with my own experience of him as mayor of New York City, where I grew up in an environment of violence that I once considered the norm. I witnessed, through the late 1980s and early 1990s, numerous activist groups entering our neighborhoods, building gardens and bringing art projects. When one of them came into my bullet hole- and gang-ridden school, it had an inspirational effect on all the teenagers, including myself: robust literature now proves that positive reinforcement is far more effective in preventing violence than any level of policing or punishment. Thus, when the mayor belatedly intervened with his police force and claimed all credit for the drop in violence, it already seemed disingenuous then; I know it to be blatantly false now.

Trump Unable to Handle Power
Why is this relevant? I believe it is important for mental health professionals to make distinctions, where applicable, between normal style and pathological traits that can cause harm. A pathologically narcissistic individual, for instance, would not be able to handle power—even as one hungrily seeks it—but would more likely develop delusional levels of grandiosity or impunity. Delusions, in turn, are more effective at mobilizing mass psychology than rational strategy, and puzzling features emerge even from formerly respectable attorneys such as Jonathan Turley and Alan Dershowitz.

We have seen a comical and innocuous-seeming Trump morph into a grotesque authoritarian willing to destroy every facet of civilized society in order to build and maintain his cult of personality. His irrationality ironically helps make his supporters fervently anti-interventionist one day and supportive of an obvious “wag the dog” war the next, according to his desires. Power may corrupt ordinary individuals, but it radically transforms dangerously pathological figures beyond what people can imagine or prepare for. Needless to say, those who are suffering from similar narcissistic wounds are the first to be attracted to such a power figure and to succumb to a shared psychosis, and Giuliani may exemplify how severely it can affect a person.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” on Sunday morning, the ghostwriter of Donald Trump’s “Art of the Deal” was asked about the president’s new habit of slurring his words and what it says about his current state.

After sharing clips of the president having trouble speaking when addressing the country on the killing of Iranian military head Qassem Suliemani, host Joy Reid asked author Tony Schwartz if he had ever seen Trump have that much trouble speaking.

“So, the slurring, I’ve noticed it,” host Reid began. “A lot of other reporters have noticed it as they posted about his speeches. He seems to be slurring more and more. did he speak that way when..”

“Oh, my gosh, no,” Schwartz interrupted. “That is a dramatic shift. He was reasonably articulate when I knew him. He was — first of all, he was not — his nervous system was not so intensely aroused and activated as it is right now. The more activated you become, the harder it is to speak clearly and simply.”

“I think this is a man who is so in fight-or-flight all the time, that it’s influencing him,” he continued. “I also think it might be — we don’t know about this — but it might be a function of his age. It might be early dementia, all of those are possible and you have to throw in ADD that he can’t keep track of what’s on his mind and so he gets ahead of it and loses the words.”

“His father had suffered from dementia,” host Reid pressed. “Was it about at the age he did now?”

“His father didn’t get dementia yeah until significantly older than Trump is now. Alzheimer’s technically is what he had, but same net result,” the author replied.

George Conway links ‘narcissistic psychopath’ Trump’s threat against Yovanovitch to new stalking report

In a series of tweets on Wednesday morning, conservative attorney George Conway made a point of noting — as others have — that President Donald Trump may have hinted at the stalking of Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch when he spoke with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky last year.

With explosive reports noting text messages between Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas and Robert Hyde, a Republican running for Congress in Connecticut, that seemed to indicate surveillance of the U.S. diplomat with the promise of escalation, the husband of White House adviser Kellyanne Conway tweeted that it would come as no surprise if Trump was involved.

“Many tweets suggesting a possible link between the apparent surveillance of Yovanovitch to #IMPOTUS @realDonaldTrump’s later comment to Zelensky that “she’s going to go through some things” have precipitously done so without considering an important, critical fact,” Conway tweeted before adding, “that @realDonaldTrump by any reasonable standard is a narcissistic psychopath, devoid of conscience, compassion, morality, and remorse. From 'a very stable genius'.....Trump apparently was asked to read a portion of the US constitution for a TV show and he could not do it and blamed his staff for his failure to be able to read!

The best one I have heard so far is that he told the prime minister of India that his country did not border China.......lolol......I would imagine the prime minister of India knows who his neighbours are!

I am certain someone from the TV company will confirm or otherwise his ability to read!

Its interesting you should mention this because it is something that is being commented a lot on right now. Yes there is some speculation that Trump cannot really read at an adult level and has reading comprehension problems and has for most his life. Appearing on MSNBC on Sunday afternoon, former Donald Trump advisor Omarosa Manigault Newman backed up assertions in the book ” A Very Stable Genius” that the president is prone to tantrums when he doesn’t get his way and becomes abusive to staffers and cabinet members alike.

Speaking with host Alex Witt, Omarosa — who wrote an insider’s account of life in the White House after she was unceremoniously fired — said there was little in the new book that surprised her.

Digging into her Oval Office days, the former adviser and longtime Trump associate described the president’s “zero to 200” screaming jags when displeased.

“What is it like when this president has one of his angry fits, gets upset, and [co-panelist] Sam Nunberg is smiling as well so I can ask you both, as it well-represented here in the Washington Post does he go off the rails?” host Witt asked.

“Oh, he does, he goes from zero to 200 over the most trivial things,” Manigault Newman said as she smiled. “He starts to scream, he turns orange-red, he starts to emote, and he doesn’t want you to leave, because everybody wants to kind of edge away. He would have these tantrums and there was no way to calm him down. and then an hour later, he would call you and try to have a normal conversation. It was not normal at all.”

“There is something neurological going on with Donald Trump,” she continued. “I’m not a doctor but I’ll tell you what I observed in 2003 when I first met the man and when I last spoke to him. There is some disconnect with his ability to process basic information. It’s not that he doesn’t know the basic terminology of the government, of its structure and functions. He makes statements that have an impact around the world; that’s what he doesn’t grasp, his ignorance is destroying our country.”

‘Erratic, reckless, impulsive and destructive’: Group of psychiatrists urge a evaluation of Trump as he poses ‘a maximum danger’

A Yale psychiatrist leads a group of medical professionals who have called on Congress to demand that President Donald Trump undergo a mental health evaluation after he ordered a drone strike that killed top Iranian military official Qassem Soleimani.

Bandy X. Lee, a forensic psychiatrist at the Yale School of Medicine who has consulted widely with state and international governments on a public health approach to violence prevention in communities and in prisons, told Salon that Congress should convene a panel of mental health experts to determine Trump’s fitness for office. Lee serves as the president of the World Mental Health Coalition, which issued a statement formally calling on Congress to convene a panel of mental health experts to assess Trump’s fitness.

“We have been seriously warning about this for some time. The U.S. Congress must act immediately and forcefully without further delay,” the group said in a statement, describing Trump as “psychologically and mentally both dangerous and incapacitated.”

Senior military leaders must pass annual psychiatric evaluations, but Trump is exempt from such evaluations, even though he is “the person in most need and who is a maximum danger,” according to the statement.

The psychiatrists warned that Americans “cannot wait any longer to deal with the dangerous situation caused by a mentally compromised person acting in erratic, reckless, impulsive and destructive ways.”

Since Congress has the constitutional authority to fund military action, the statement urges Congress to “act immediately to take any war-making powers out of his hands,” adding that it is “imperative that the Congress be equipped with accurate information” from medical professionals qualified in “assessment and management of psychological dangers.”

“We urge Congress to consult with us for a profile, if not evaluation, and to take seriously the mental health aspects that are at play in this mentally impaired president,” the statement concluded.

Lee spoke with Salon about the need for Trump to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, the danger posed by his actions in the Middle East and the criticisms her comments have received from other mental health professionals. Lee said her views represent those of the World Mental Health Coalition and no other institution.

The World Mental Health Coalition recently urged Congress to demand Trump undergo an evaluation. What do you hope this statement will accomplish? What would this look like? Is there a congressional process for demanding the president be evaluated by a psychiatrist?

The statement was in response to Qassem Soleimani’s assassination, which was precisely the kind of emotion-driven incident we warned against in our petition a month ago. Now that his own defense secretary contradicted that there was an imminent threat to four embassies — the reason the president gave — I believe most people can now see how his internal processes supersede security considerations. We barely averted an all-out war — not for our doing — and we shouldn’t wait until a similar crisis erupts again.

If the Congress continues to treat this matter as pure politics, it will misunderstand the nature of the problem and be compromised in handling it. Congressional committees consult with experts all the time, and the nation’s top mental health experts are eager to be of service. We have also established an independent expert panel for the evaluation of presidential fitness based on medical criteria only. It does not have to be us, but the panel needs to be independent, given the usual compromise of White House-employed physicians.

The statement came in response to Trump’s speech following Iran’s retaliatory attack last week. What do you make of the president’s apparent difficulty in pronouncing words and his repeated sniffling during his statement?

These are obviously abnormal signs. He has shown severe emotional, cognitive and neurological signs, including intoxication, for some time. Getting him an urgent evaluation, as well as treatment, would only be the humane thing to do — both for him and for the country.

You note in the statement that senior military leaders must undergo annual psychological evaluations, thus the military officials advising Trump are presumably of sound mind. Why do you think these officials publicly support the president’s actions if he poses as large a danger as you say?

We know that Pentagon officials were stunned that he chose the most extreme option. The statements are extraordinary, if we consider that military officials are trained not to question their commander-in-chief. I believe it is clear we have no control over him. People mistake Donald Trump for being less likely to go to war because of his timidity and his promise to “end endless wars.” But a cowardly person with a fragile sense of self is exactly the kind of person who resorts to violence — or can be manipulated into doing so if there are nefarious interests.

You suggest that the president should undergo an evaluation the same way military officials get annual evaluations. Would you want to see all presidents undergo an annual psychological evaluation?

Yes. Almost every job dealing with life-and-death matters in this country has a psychological fitness-for-duty test built in. Yet, the most consequential job, now capable of extinguishing multiple species on the planet based on one person’s decision, is not required to possess even basic rationality.

Salon recently spoke with Amy Barnhorst, a psychiatrist at UC Davis. She said she doesn’t believe an evaluation or even an involuntary mental health hold would be effective in impacting Trump’s behavior or position. How do you respond to your peers who argue that your proposals damage the profession and do little if anything to rein in Trump?

The interview exemplifies our problem of scale. We can explain away the need for intervention —even when we have the medical and legal authority — through absurd technicalities. It comes out of fear. This is what the American Psychiatric Association did in the beginning of this presidency when it dug up the obscure “Goldwater rule” and turned it into a gag order, losing sight that the original rule was meant to protect society — not the public figure. Now we have the extraordinary situation of facing the greatest public mental health emergency in our lifetimes, and the mental health authorities are missing in action. I say the profession has already damaged itself, and some of us are trying to salvage it.

Encroaching tyrannies want professionals to be mere technicians that they can control and use. Medical professionals, without a moral compass, can become instruments of the worst atrocities. This is precisely the situation for which the Declaration of Geneva was created: “Do not lose sight of your humanitarian obligation for technicalities” is basically its message from the experience of Nazism. Our critics compare us to Nazi and Soviet psychiatrists, but they abandoned professional standards to serve the state. We are advocating that we keep with professional standards, even if it displeases the state.

Our primary question should be: Does the president meet criteria for an emergency evaluation? Whether it is a 72-hour hold (as in Florida) or a 48-hour hold (as in DC) does not matter, as most evaluations do not take that long. He would be let go if he does not meet criteria. What is important to recognize is that mental impairment exists, a president is not immune to it and avoiding an evaluation does not make it go away.

To assess legal or constitutional feasibility is not our job. Would we not treat a heart attack simply because it is happening in the president? Our job is to meet the medical need. Members of Congress who have direct interactions with the president can request an evaluation. They could also request an involuntary fitness-for-duty evaluation. In my view, citizens, who are direct stakeholders, are also appropriate auspices.

Mental health professionals could then order the hold if the situation warrants it based on uniform standards. Given that our last petition drew more than 800 signatories, we could expect a near-consensus. Whether security staff will comply is another concern that will be a decision of their own conscience. The military should take the protocol measures it does when a fellow serviceperson poses a danger. The Congress would do well to draw up additional articles of impeachment on the latest bypassing of constitutional requirements in launching an act of war, which would serve as limit setting that can help prevent future dangers. We each need to do our part, and we should not stop until the danger is removed.

Unless we are conscientious, independent moral agents of our own, we can easily be coopted into the machinery of domination. We should not let what happened to Nazi doctors, who abandoned medical principles to serve power, happen here.

As I have posted on this thread many times. The real problem with Trump supporters is they do not watch him. They see the little flashes of Trump owning the libs and believe things are gong great. Or actually suspend disbelief that somethingt is wrong. But it looks to me that reality is closing in and even the sycophants and cult followers are going to have to confront that.

And let me show you why and an example of a couple of those things. You won't hardly ever see a more suspender of disbeliefer than @shootersa. Why there is nothing he can not make up an excuse for Trump for. And even though I can't make him watch Trump in order to jump to Trump's defense he will still post this:

Trump displays ‘serious signs’ of cognitive deterioration as his impeachment trial ramps up

President Donald Trump’s comments about Thomas Edison sparked concerns about his mental health among attorneys, former government officials and a Yale University psychiatrist.

Trump on Wednesday compared Tesla founder Elon Musk to inventor Thomas Edison in an interview with CNBC.

“He’s one of our great geniuses, and we have to protect our genius,” Trump said. “You know, we have to protect Thomas Edison, and we have to protect all of these people that came up with originally the light bulb, and the wheel and all of these things. And he’s one of our very smart people, and we want to cherish those people.”

“I spoke to him very recently, and he’s also doing the rockets. He likes rockets. And he does good at rockets, too, by the way. I never saw where the engines come down with no wings, no anything and they’re landing. I said, ‘I’ve never seen that before,'” the president added.

Maya Wiley, a former attorney for the ACLU and NAACP, told MSNBC’s Brian Williams on Wednesday that she found Trump “both sad and disturbing.”

“I do have to wonder what that means for him cognitively and whether or not something is going on,” she said. “I had a mother who had Alzheimer’s and passed away, and it’s not funny. We should be very concerned about his health.”

“You’re not the first person to say that,” Williams replied.

“To speak about Thomas Edison as if he is still alive is simply something that is scary,” Wiley aid.

“We have to point out this is someone’s client,” Williams said. “At the same time as he made those comments, he’s being actively defended in a de facto public court of law.”

Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance agreed that “everything about this is extremely disturbing.”

“He is on trial for engaging in misconduct … At the same time, as Maya points out, he constantly engages in conduct that calls into question his fitness, if not his mental and physical condition,” she said. “And this, I think, is a pressing concern that Congress needs to take seriously, because the Cabinet, which would have some authority under the 25th Amendment to do something about it, apparently doesn’t.”

Yale psychiatry professor Bandy X. Lee, the founder of the World Mental Health Coalition, agreed with the attorneys’ assessment in an interview with Salon.

“We must consider Donald Trump’s mental compromise as being threefold: emotional, cognitive and neurological — including potential substance misuse,” Lee said. “While it is not possible to come to a diagnosis from a distance, it is very possible to distinguish many things, such as abnormal symptoms and signs — whether these are patterns of strategic presentation or stereotypical disease over time, trends of decline and dangerousness.”

Lee said Trump’s comments about Edison show a “marked worsening” of Trump’s mental state.

“He is less able to stay with a topic, to find complex words, to form complete sentences. And the content of his words is becoming more impoverished, if not nonsensical,” Lee said. “Connecting the present to a distant past or to history is common in progressive dementia, and while dementia is still not a diagnosis we can make without detailed medical records, these are serious signs of deterioration we should not ignore.”

“Whatever the source of the loose association, he speaks of Thomas Edison as if he were a contemporary of Elon Musk that we should equally protect. And he mentions light bulbs and the wheel as if they were recent inventions like the electric car,” she continued. “His impairment should be very clear to everyone, and I have stated that it is inhumane, either for him or for ourselves, to continue to prop up this man as being normal.”

“As he declines cognitively, his other symptoms are likely to worsen, as well,” Lee added. “He mentions at the end, ‘We help him, so he has to help us,’ as if he were keeping Mr. Musk beholden lest he betray him or leave him without protection — what someone is likely to say when he is paranoid.”

Lee was joined by hundreds of psychiatrists from around the country in calling on Congress to convene a panel of mental health professionals to evaluate Trump’s mental state. Lee wrote a joint op-ed earlier this week with former White House ethics chief Richard Painter warning that Trump should not be tried by the Senate, because he “may not be mentally competent.”

“We argued that the Senate trial should not go forward as long as he has raised, through multiple recent comments, doubts about his competence,” Lee told Salon. “In any court of law, if questions about the defendant’s competence arise, the trial cannot proceed, since the law requires that only those who are competent to stand trial be tried.”

John Bolton told GOP donors that Trump is ‘mentally unstable’: report

A new report from Vanity Fair’s Gabriel Sherman sheds some more light on former national security adviser John Bolton’s decision to blow up President Donald Trump’s top defense against impeachment.

According to Sherman’s sources, Bolton has told Republican donors that he believes Trump is “mentally unstable” and worries that the president could pull the United States completely out of NATO if he wins a second term.

Sherman reports that Trump allies are preparing to launch a furious counterattack against Bolton and his tell-all book that is scheduled for release on March 17th.

“He’s a bitter ex-employee,” one former White House tells Sherman.

A source close to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says that America’s top diplomat may even get into the action as a character witness against Bolton.

“Pompeo and Bolton were at war with each other during the administration,” the source explained. “Pompeo thought that Bolton was constantly trying to undercut him and the president.”

Nonetheless, Bolton’s revelation has made it all but certain that the Senate will call him to testify at the president’s impeachment trial.

“[Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is] resigned to the fact there will be witnesses,” one Republican tells Sherman.

Fox News caught laughing on hot mic as Trump slurs his words at New Jersey rally

President Donald Trump went to the blue state of New Jersey on Tuesday evening where he played the victim of an evil witch hunt where corrupt Democrats are out to get him.

Somewhere in the lengthy rant, Trump started talking about immigration and tried to say that people were “sheltering criminals.” Instead, he began to slur his words and tried to divert to another topic.

Fox News was running the speech live, until the moment, when a commentator could be heard laughing at the president on a hot mic. Fox then cut from Trump’s speech.

It isn’t the first time Trump has slurred his words during a speech.

During his speech about Iran, the president slurred several words, got words wrong, sniffled and stumbled through the whole speech.

The tell-all book by an anonymous White House official explained that this is a frequent occurrence with the president.

It seems that Trump “genuinely doesn’t remember important facts,” the official writes in the book. And the president often “can’t remember what he’s said or been told,” the official warns.

The official recalled Trump once saying he wasn’t sure he had “ever even heard of a Category 5” hurricane. The problem, however, is he had been briefed, according to the official, on at least four previous Category 5 hurricanes.

The official wondered, “Was he forgetting these briefings? Or more problematic, was he not paying attention at all? These are events that affect millions of Americans, yet they don’t seem to stick in his brain.”

President Donald Trump bizarrely proclaimed that *Democrats want to kill your cows,” while at a speech in Iowa Thursday evening.

Trump, who never met a Big Mac he didn’t like, is known for frequently spending his Saturday nights at his Washington hotel eating a “well-done” steak with ketchup.

Trump then warned that if Democrats want to kill cows, then “you’re next,” threatened.

The Green New Deal talks about methane that often comes from cows, which is presumed that cows have flatulence, in fact it’s cow belches that cause methane emissions. One of the greatest producers of methane, far surpassing that of cows, are termites, who eat and expel massive quantities of wood.

It’s unclear whether Trump actually believes that Democrats want to kill humans as part of the Green New Deal, but he provided no proof of it.

Aside from vegetarians, many Democrats, like hamburgers and steaks. Former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke made Whataburger one of the key campaign stops during his Senate race.
